Reaction To Hymyhuulet - Submarine Situation (Finnish Comedy) 

Hymyhuulet was very popular back then. It was a short lived comedy serie during 1987-1988.

80's was the golden age of finnish comedy shows!

In the 80s, only two channels were shown in Finland, i.e. the state-owned YLE1 and YLE2. The advertising-financed MTV operated within them. The program usually ended around 11 p.m. and started around 6 p.m. with a children's program. So there was about 5 hours of real TV time a day. You can be sure that whatever came on TV during those 5 (about 10 total, two channels) hours, it was really popular. Sure, some people might have a satellite dish or cable in the city, but most of them didn't have these until the 90s. That's when MTV also started its own channel under the name MTV3. (MTV= Mainos-TV means commercial television)

They did to some sketches, which characters have lived on. Some of them are a bit incorrect by today's standards though. These two, Aki and Turo, recorded an album called 'Lievä kantrihuijaus' (Slight Country Fraud). The dynamics of the two were that the smaller one outwitted and picked on the taller one. Here's their song Mahtisonni (Mighty Bull): "Aki ja Turo - Mahtisonni". Hymyhuulet (Smiling Lips) followed another sketch series some of the same actors did called Velipuolikuu (Brother Half Moon). They did a Montreaux-Silver-Rose-winning 'Raw War' episode, which is in English. They too had some classic sketches. I mean how could you get this out of your head once you've seen it. It's a cooking show. An Easter Hanukkas is being prepared: "Pääsiäishanukas".

I see similarities to English comedy too, specially Monty Python has this kind of a bit black, and allmost psychologig way crazy humor... after all minimalistic good story.

No, I have not seen it, altough I am Finn. But as I moved to Stockholm at the time, this must refer to the "submarine incident" in Swedish Karlskrona waters, indentified as sub... as a seal... as an object... still unidentified by 2024. 😎

You can now watch full Uuno Turhapuro movies from MTV katsomo, sadly they dont have any english subtitles to my knowledge. I dont know if it would be possible to have some automatic translator translate the finnish subtitles to english.

I remember this show from the 80's. I'm 50 now. They're making fun of Swedish navy because they were looking for Russian subs in their waters unsuccessfully for a long time.

You should check TABU, Alhola, and all Pirkka-Pekka Petelius shows like Pulttibois, Manitbois, Mutapainin ystävät etc. Sadly there might be no english subtitles... Somebody make english subtitles for those!
