@@OldSkuleNerd I saw it last week when you aired it I sent that a month ago. Awesome reaction, you are right girls have been doing this for wayyyy longer than jinjer. Like Kittie, arch enemy, otep and many more. Keep it up
IWABO were my favorite Warped Tour band back in the glory days of 2007-2012. They freaking ruled! And yes Krysta the singer could do it all, sing and scream with the very best of them
I saw them at Warped in 2012, I saw a dude hit a girl in the crowd, and 6 other dudes came running in and started beating the ever living shit out of him during a particularly heavy part of a song, cant remember which one, that memory will forever live in my brain lmaooooo
There where a few singers doing that back then. Kittie, Otep, Straight Line Stitch, to name a few. According to Tatiana, she learned to scream and growl because of Otep. And don't forget, she joined Jinjer in 2010.
Toured a bit with IWABO during this era. They were a riot, and people always left shows talking about them. What they’re playing is structured, but not in the way most people write and structure songs. They write riffs in a bunch of different keys, then assemble riffs in one key into a song. When Courtney replace Krysta, and Mike eventually joined on guitar (both now of Spiritbox), the songs became slightly more structured and less controlled chaos. Gift Of Death is the most notable song of the later era. There was a few other bands with female vocalists doing that sort of singing screaming thing (Kittie immediately comes to my mind) in the early 2000’s.
Wow, what a cool experience for you. Thanks for giving insight into how exactly they got their sound, to me it was always really unique and ear-catching.
This is the singer of the first 2 albums she left and courtney (now of spiritbox) took over vocals on the last 2 albums before they eventually split up.mike the guitar player of spiritbox and husband of courtney did guitar on the last ever album by this band.
Finally someone checks out IWABO and especially their old stuff. Also you should maybe check out 'Danger in the manger' by them! Super stupid, but fun video.
I guess they were ahead of their time. Courtney LaPlante and her husband were both in this band at one point before they formed Spiritbox if that tells you anything.
When it comes to this group, pretty sure you'd dig the colorful, brutal, retro hijinks of "Danger In The Manger", and their pool party video "You Know That Ain't Them Dogs' Real Voices"... Yeah, that's actually the name hahah. Cheers!
Gift Of Death - iwrestledabearonce You must do it now, It's not goofy. But it's intense all all eff. Also, this is Krysta Cameron. The Boat Paddle video is Courtney, who is also from Spirtbox. Courtney sings on Gift of Death.
I wasn't into OTEP because I dont like the growling, but did she sing high and clear as well? I definitely remember OTEP as a female growling voice, it was crazy.. then I saw Jinjer more recently. Never heard of IWABO though.
Yep, Otep Shamaya is arguably the first real standout clean/growl female artist. She has a good range, and a brutal growl, though I've never heard her do a clean belt and suspect she couldn't get anywhere near Courtney or Tati for vocal range. I always get 'very very angry Pink' vibes. Without her as an inspiration Tati may never have gone down the path she did.
Holy..... fukoyomi..... this was amazing. How did I not know this existed?? This is like the death core team from Broken by the Scream just going full out but in one complete voice. Wow.
Interesting take aha, I absolutely adore BBTS but don't like this era of IWABO at all, yet I can somehow see where you're coming from with the comparison haha.
yeah, she and husband Darroh Sudderth divorced awhile back (that guy is legendary, amazing singer/frontman when he wasn't really drunk or sick), freed her up for EL. i liked her better up front than courtney. they seemed more fun & frivolous (although to be fair, they were always pretty fun anyway). that little rifftacular break in the middle when we see all of them in 70s shorts? electric callboy has EVERYONE kissing their collectively cheesy asses for doing just what IWABO did 15 yrs ago.
Tatiana was in several bands before Jinjer, and has been singing both styles since seeing Otep in roughly 2003 (Tatiana says she saw them for the first time when she was 15-16), so it’s been around for quite some time for several singers. Internet has made it possible to discover them now, and it’s all amazing to see the skill levels involved.
Here's the thing, Jinjer's "Pisces" video got popular among reactors partly because it hit at just the right time, right before reaction channels started to take off, and also (not to take away from the rest of the band, who are amazing musicians) because Tatiana is particularly good at switching between harsh and clean vocals, with a very deep, almost masculine-sounding, growl that not too many women can emulate. But they were hardly the first band with a female vocalist doing harsh vocals, or even switching between growls and cleans. In addition to iwrestledabearonce, Kittie was doing similar things back in the early 2000s, as were Arch Enemy and Walls of Jericho using purely harsh female vocals (no cleans). Otep was combining harsh vocals with clean singing (though her cleans were often more akin to rap or spoken word) in the mid-late 2000s, and In This Moment (along with several other bands) was mixing up clean and harsh female vocals in the mid-2000s (and doing it extremely well - Maria Brink is fantastic). My point with this little snippet of history isn't to take anything away from Tatiana or from Jinjer - I love them, they're a great band, and they're outstanding at what they do. But musically, what they are doing is evolutionary more than it is revolutionary, if that makes sense. If you're interested in more, definitely check out any of these bands I've talked about, particularly their mid-2000s work, if for no other reason than to put modern trends into a historical perspective.
Damn i used to jam the shit out of Kittie when i was stationed at Ft. Lewis in 2000-2001. I loved that band, not sure what ever happened to them. Another great band from back then was SNOT. A damn shame the singer (male) was killed in a car accident, they were an amazing band.
Female vocalists doing brutal growls and cleans goes back to at least Otep ca 2000, who inspired Tatiana and I suspect influenced Maria Brink as well. Check out anything from the Confrontation DVD which came out in 2009 for the best sound live (Ghostflowers, for example), or for an official video their most watched is Blood Pigs.
I found a CD of theirs in the garbage years and years ago, my introduction to this epic band, it was a masterpiece that I wore out playing over and over and over again.
I fucking LOVE this man and his descriptions were absolutely on point 🎯 I had the pleasure of seeing IWABO in their first and second tour. They’re goofballs on and offstage and signed my one dollar bill when I couldn’t afford to buy any merch, ♥️ 🤘🏻
One year later, Floor Jansen was cutting between growls, belting and operatic head voice with ReVamp. Simone Pujilmers of Cerebral Bore was doing even more impressive growls eleven years ago. Courtney Laplante, now of Spiritbox, replaced Krysta in 2012. Not taking anything away from Tatiana, but she wasn't the only one.
You forgot Nina Hagen , she has vocal range covering nearly whole 88 key piano , shes like few keys short from both ends and she was doing that in 1970s .
Doesn't help that iwabo had a lot more mathcore in their sound; metalheads didn't latch on, why would they, they sound more like Botch than any metal band.
The other band doing this in 2008 was the British Band Rolo Tomassi... check out their newer stuff like Rituals off the album Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It...
Sir. The only things around like this in 2008 was like flyleaf, first album in this moment and arch enemy. IWABO combined it all and they got on to metal sucks for like 3 months and then it was like nope. This band is amazing and I’m glad someone else noticed this was well before it’s time. Most girls in the scene mention 👆this band. Even Courtney from spirit box said this was her inspiration and then joined the band. From what I’m lead to believe.
These are serious growls, holy moly ... That's truely WTH worthy ! Well, technically this is not 10 years before Jinjer. Jinjer started in 2009 and Tatiana joined 2010. Now you have to react to Monochromatic Black ! Phosphenes, Abaddon, The Herd ... doesn't matter. Get your ears flushed 📢.
I think the shock factor with pisces is, at least partly, that it goes from clean singing and jazz unexpectedly to metal and growling. a combination of cleans and screaming can also be seen in early works from the agonist
I remember the last thing I told Krysta was that I was really sad that I couldn’t find bears to wrestle with in Brazil, it was around 2009-2010, good old times 😢. I used to ask her a lot of weird things actually on Formspring
give me a number to watch you react to "The cat's pajamas." you thought these vocal changes were exceptional? my man, you'll be blown away at that if this reaction is genuine
Wow...I was not expecting that, but it was awesome and thank you so much for reacting to this, and adding another band to my list. I will say there were other bands in the early 2000s (Otep comes to mind) that were doing this with female fronts so it is not new, but I will agree none reached the react level that Jinjer has (it was the reason I found your channel). Great reaction as always and another great band that I need to check out. Well off down the rabbit hole again I guess.
Looks that they still are wresteling a bear. Great voice. Great performers. Never heard of them. Amazing. Tatiana’s mother😂. Thank you for this reaction.
I'll never forget seeing this video for the first time on headbangers ball after a long night of partying. Brings back good memories. Also, Straight Line Stitch were around at the same time and Alexis Brown was killing it with screams and singing. You should check out Remission or Taste of Ashes.
glad i stumbled over this. 1) this band was WAY in front of the crowd. krysta cameran, soon-to-be-wife of the legendary Darroh Sudderth, vocalist of the amazing FAIR TO MIDLAND, right there with angela and otep, etc. and of course, 2) they are doing what ELECTRIC CALLBOY does today, in terms of that crazy-nerdcore LOOK and behavior. this shit was brilliant. i liked them better with krysta than even with courtney (their singer after krysta left).
Late, so this probably won't be seen, but Alissa White-Gluz was doing ranged screams and singing in 2008 as The Agonist's lead vocalist. I don't think lows+highs for both cleans+screams were shown of in a single song until their 2012 song "The Escape," but any of the first five songs from Lullabies For The Dormant Mind work. Also, Danger In The Manger is another great IWABO song from the same album that shows here talent and the band's uniqueness
The first time I saw iwrestledabearonce was with the song: You know that ain't them dogs' real voices and I was blown away. I've been a fan of them ever since. it's a shame that the singer stopped. But I can only recommend OTEP - Blood Pigs or T.R.I.C.
As others have commented. This wasn’t the first band to have this kind of lady vocals. I can name a few others that aren’t in the comments. Also, as others have stated, Courtney of Spiritbox was in this band. Left to start Spiritbox. You mentioned Jinjer. They formed in 2009. Walls of Jericho, a band mentioned in the comments, formed in 1998 and also had a female lead vocalist who screamed/growled. Arch Enemy formed in 1995 and had a female vocalist who had aggressive vocals. Point is, this isn’t new. Just had been overlooked. Each day more and more women put themselves out there as musicians and vocalist in these heavy genre bands and I think it’s a great thing. Especially for the metal scene for what should be obvious reasons. (Edited for spelling)
Oh, there were a lot of ladies in extreme metal back in the days, even in the 90s or 80s. Fear of God, Holy Moses... the Dutch death metal band Sinister had a female singer for a while, the lady screamed and growled in the Dutch band Occult before. We have Angela Gossow for Arch Enemy. And when I lived in Heidelberg back in the 90s there was this technical death metal band from Ludwigshafen/Kaiserslautern called Amorph Pneuma with the female vocalist Bambi, and she probably had the deepest growls I've ever heard... even deeper than Tatiana and Courtney and the lady in this video. Extreme female vox are not THAT new - but I am glad that all the women in metal are much more present nowadays.
What I Always Wanted is cool and good video. I don't feel like Morgan's growls are quite as brutal as Otep and Angela half a decade later but Kittie was first and MTV probably wasn't ready for what was coming. Though also Kittie was all female which is awesome.
ah Krysta Cameron. The woman who Courtney LaPlante calls her idol...yet has never met her despite replacing her. Krysta quit after she got knocked up by the dude from Fair To Midland. That guy is an incredible vocalist too and somehow got a song about Penises turned into a single and music video. Bet their kid has an awesome voice.
Otep was kind of doing it even before this. She would switch between slam/pseudo rap poetics, grows, occasional singing, talking, and whispering; though she did mostly pseudo rap and growls now she uses more singing but still mixes up all sorts of styles.
Yes bands in 2008 were doing this, but this was the only band with a female singer doing this. Opeth is a good example. Male vocals though, IDK if that matters to what the question was. Jinjer is basically Opeth with a female lead vocal IMO.
"Otep" and "The Agonist" did that in 2008/09 as well. Listen to "Blood Pigs" and "Warhead" & "Thank You Pain" respectively. Even earlier than that is Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy, who was growling like this in 2000. Look up "Nemesis" by them. Before that even you have bands like Kittie from the 90s; See "Brackish" and "Spit." Jinjer isn't the pioneer of this sound, just the latest.
"10 years before Jinjer - Pisces shocked millions of people on youtube..." - well, yes, but don`t forget, Jinjer also waited 8 years for their success... 🙂👍
Yes there were other female fronted bands doing this kind of stuff in 2008. Other bands included The Agonist, Light this City, and Arch Enemy. They all had albums out around that time.
