It may be a mental thing about having the security of the bar being present to recenter yourself if needed. Having trust in yourself to stay pulled up in a step etc. is surprisingly absent in many dancers. This has happened for me and girls I've watched in class. When you don't have confidence in yourself to hit everything it seriously messes up your dancing. Staying in your head really shows on the the outside, so trying to be mindful in almost a meditative way and staying in body helps you feel where you're balance is failing. Then once you've recognised specifically what's not feeling right, ask your teacher for an outsiders view of what's not working and what you could do to improve it.

Try filming your pirouettes. You will likely spot the problem. With me, I was not keeping my head centered and level while spotting. My head was throwing me to the ground. Not one of my teacher's noticed it. Everyone kept telling me to hold my shoulders, ribs, hips, pelvis, etc., but I was getting nowhere after tons of practice. The day I taped myself I saw it right away. After directing my attention to keeping my head centred and level I quickly learned to nail my pirouettes.
