The podcast seems to be a hit piece. With no support for the assertions made, with no clarity of term definitions, with misinformation and lack of or incompetent research there is no way a competent editor would let this piece air unless the objective was to smear the reputation of BTS or result in some other negativity towards BTS. The timing of this podcast is also questionable. This is really unfortunate and decreases the credibility of the New York Times for allowing this release.

When I was in college, I always sat in the front row because if I gave a stupid answer to a question, the rest of the class only saw the back of my head. lol. I told that to my professor once and he told me that you can say anything just be prepared to back it up. Exactly what you just said. If you are going to make a statement, be prepared to back it up. Especially as a journalist! I thought journalism required research but more and more things are reported that have not been substantiated which to me is gossip. And I think people today are either too lazy or just don’t have time to check out what is being said before believing things. I’m afraid this applies to politics as well. As far as BTS , why can’t they sing in English. Why is that a sell out? People are just jealous of their success. K pop is a profession. It covers all aspects of the entertainment business/performance. I don’t know of any western groups that can put on a show like them. For example Suga's tour D-Day was like a movie to me..I am an ARMY but I grew up listening to music in different genres and in different languages. And I am happy for Taylor's and Beyoncé s successful tours. K-pop is a different show, especially when BTS performs. Thanks for listening .

It is so strange that all this pushback came from doing three English songs as a group and in some of their solo work, when they (and other groups) have had full albums in Japanese. No one questioned their Korean identity then.

Thank you for this. Several months ago, The Times published an article claiming South Koreans are unhappy that K Pop has become popular in the US. There were no supporting statistics for the claim, only unidentified man-on-the-street citations such as: "It's our music, nobody else's." (?!) Subsequent to that, the Sunday edition included a full-page, K Pop pullout filled with inaccuracies and opinion presented as fact. (ie., "There are more Chinese-Americans than Korean-Americans living in the US." And, "K Pop, a uniquely Asian genre, is misunderstood by most Westerners.") Shame on the NY Times and hooray for Asian EAC!)

RM: Haters gonna hate... 😏 I am curious, though, about the timing of this hit-piece: 1. BTS is on hiatus, so why now? 2. Did the success of BTS' solo efforts have any connection to what seems like an attack piece 3. Is there concern that maybe Western pop music artists are losing ground to k-pop artists? (just wondering 😉) 4. Or, is it meant to be a distraction, BTS has one of the biggest fandoms in the world. Is it big enough to make global audiences refocus their attention elsewhere 🤔 (the US has been accused, in the past, of using pop culture to distract the masses).
@kshafer6220
@kshafer6220 9 месяцев назад
1. Because they can't respond. The company could, though. 2. Absolutely. Haters constantly attack BTS's achievements in order to try and diminish them. For example, they were first mocked for being nominated for Top Social Artist, but when they won, the award was dismissed as 'just a paper award.' 3. Oh yes. Western music is the self-proclaimed best in the world (just ask the Recording Academy), and they are indeed being challenged: by mediocrity in their own ranks, and outstanding music from foreigners. 4. There may be some of that. ARMYs aren't so easily distracted (especially not by attacks on Bangtan) but we are generally underestimated as 'airheaded teenage girls'. The fact that 75% of us are over the age of 20 and more than 35% male never seems to register.

Western media earn more, in my opinion, in spreading bad news, hate and racism. For what it's worth, i think, they intentionally made this podcast episode so out of touch because they know army will not tolerate such mistreatment again for the ot7..because of this hate that they are spreading, i bet their rankings went up..id rather listen to army talking about that messed up Podcast to give more views and likes rather than listen to them.. Instead, we should celebrate and take further up the journalists and analysts like our host here because we learn so much from her and our understanding of our Army journey as well as BTS journey has been more in-depth and evolved everytime we listen to videos like this. What gets me is that they have no problem sharing their opinion but the moment fans share their opinion suddenly fans are crazy and toxic and are being blocked on twitter. Don't dish it out if you can't take it. I saw someone on twitter who more than likely didn't even listen to the podcast say they supported the podcast because "kpop is terrible and the fans are toxic". If you don't like kpop or the fans that's fine but that's not what this whole discourse was about. You don't have to be a fan of kpop or BTS to know when someone is being ignorant and disrespectful.

YES, this is an education in how to deconstruct an article and understand the covert message. As a translator by trade, I appreciate you showing how you do it. This is a powerful tool, helping the general public grasp how to not just read and accept/refute an article or opinion but how to understand its intent. There is what people say, what people mean and where they intent to lead you. Those things are not always aligned. Whether by intent or not, the result is the same, especially when that person is in a position of trust or leadership. What people learn here, they can use elsewhere and that is very powerful. THANK YOU. Beyond the topic, this is education, a very important role of journalism which has been severely neglected. THANK YOU, pls keep going.

The obsession of kpopies with artists singing in English is alarming, noone says that Abba lost their roots cause they sing in English, Maneskin, Ricky Martin...and i never saw people complaining that opera singers lost their roots cause they sing in different languages. I wonder how many people cried "sell out" when Trent Reznor befan making movie scores instead of NIN albums. It is some pure fetish, xenophobia, entitlement, mixed together I don't care what language BTS sings, they could put out album in Klingon, if i don't like it so be it, it doesn't make me love them less, you will never like everything from the artist, but i would never be entitled to dictate what language they should sing or what style, it's like if someone will come to you and say: you can read only biographies and not fiction, or: ypu can only paint in oil, don't you dare touch watercolor

It’s interesting isn’t it when my first reaction is how talented they must be to be able to sing in not 1 but 3 languages: Korean, Japanese and English, that’s even before you consider the merits of any individual song. Why are they attempting the gatekeeping English and western music? They don’t have any problems exporting it to the rest of the world. It’s so very narrow minded.
@kshafer6220
@kshafer6220 9 месяцев назад
@@anneprendergast7834 Because the US music industry functions on the idea that US music is the best in the world. And it simply is not true- never has been. So when groups come along that challenge that idea, the insults start to fly. It happened in the 60s when the British Invasion started showing up, it happened again in the 80s when Brit and Aussie rock bands started getting super-popular, and it's happening now with BTS, TXT, Stray Kids, and other idols. People are especially vitriolic about it now precisely because US music is so mediocre, the grammys have lost respect, billboard has exposed themselves as a joke, and radio-play is pretty much bought-and-paid-for: the industry is frantic to keep up the facade of superiority and people involved in or on the fringes of the industry take the most negative stance they can in support of that. Meanwhile, BTS and ARMY roll right along like the creative, diverse juggernaut they are.

While it's a sign of maturity that one will refrain themselves from lashing back without being confrontational, I cant help but think this people with this type of mindset are pretty scary, they have a platform that voices out these unmindful and xenophobic statements and people are actually listening to them. While English is the universal language, it doesn't mean that it's is superior to all and artists who sings in English doesn't also mean they are no longer patriotic. People need to understand that for an individual to grow, they need to explore and artists, in the field of entertainment, are not an exemption. Why crucify them when they only want to work with people they admire and sing in a language they are not born to? Who gave them the right to gatekeep? This only shows how completely ignorant and egotistical they are and they, like I said, these type of people should not be in a platform where others actually listen to them.

This is one of the many reasons why the New York Times is losing it's prestigious allure when it comes to top journalism. They're losing what journalism is and going into entertainment selling headlines and controversy just like the rest of US "journalism" and that goes for both conservative and liberal outlets. I also think the timing of this coming out is very interesting. As the rest of the 4 are entering their military assignments and don't really have time to do a rebuttal or show these podcasts hosts the actual truth of their work and artistry. As you beautifully put it really looks like they didn't do any research or analytical thinking when it comes to what they were saying. Just all speculation and opinion and no real facts. Like you said it can affect their careers or prevent new people from wanting to get into their music because they think it's "just another western style artists"

I like how people like her conveniently forget that the rest of the BTS members put out music in Korean, charted music in Korean, and performed in Korean. Always love hearing your viewpoints. Agree with your assessments. BTS is a global phenomenon. However, unfortunately, once I became an ARMY and became more involved with BTS, I have noticed how many people try so hard to put them down. I don't feel that here in America we see this type of constant vitriol with huge American artists. So I have to assume that race plays a part in this. I am not a young person and in my lifetime have appreciated many genres of music from Rock 'n Roll in its infancy to Miles Davis and Jazz, to Latin music, etc. But seeing BTS for the first time blew me away. I had not seen this caliber of talent from past "boy bands", although if you understand BTS's talent, they are not a boy band but just a very talented bunch of singers, dancers, writers and producers who excel in many genres. However, this is my taste which I am entitled to. Everyone doesn't have to love them. But if you don't like them, be respectful and informed if you are a journalist, reactor, etc. Being a New Yorker most of my life, I am disappointed in the NYT for this uninformed debacle. I agree with one of the statements in the comments, I think this is just the beginning of what will happen in the next few months. The haters will have a field day with all seven members enlisted. They maybe surprised when Jin comes out in June though as he has a way of answering them in a mature and diplomatic way yet still managing to get his point across. I feel for Jin he was getting backlash about enlisting before going in and he will cop all the mischief the haters have been doing the few months before his return. I am grateful for his personality, his strength and his commitment to BTS and will be glad when J Hope will be with him in October and people will realise that they better watch what they say. I am sure Hybe will analyse the content of the podcast as well to see if anything was liable or defamatory as they have no problem in suing. I am still surprised that in the 21st century people see language as a boundary/issue. Honestly I don't think anyone cares anymore what language people are singing in. If music is good it is good. I listen to French house, Spanish rap, and of course my first love BTS. I give far more credence to the billboard 200 excl. US charts these days that the hot 100, as this shows what is really going on in the WORLD of music. We all know most journalists who profess to have knowledge of Kpop and especially BTS really don't. And we all know that very often their name is used as bait to draw in attention/sales/views. I mean all publicity is good publicity right? I for one am going to continue to ignore negativity and spend my time watching and listening to our boys until our Jinnie gets back in June. 💜 (And a shout out to TXT who have sold out shows/tours and have million selling albums, they can definitely hold their own!)

I’m not a fan of the label K-pop. It’s another way the Western world locks artists into a little box. BTS are not K-pop and Jungkook is an international artist. These people (Kara Nolastname) who say BTS is a sellout for using English don’t make the comment when BTS release a Japanese album- so why is English only for artists that look like them? Very xenophobic behaviour there. The comment about TXT being younger brothers comes from an award speech Jin made prior to TXT debut where he called them 남동생 (younger brothers) - which makes me wonder if Kara Nolastname was a solo/anti. I can see why she would prefer to be anonymous. Talking smack about BTS and not having the evidence to back it up is going to create some attention from Army. Which unfortunately, is what they want. Their rubbish podcast is receiving attention- far more than it deserves. I think it best if everyone ignores them. Don’t fall into their trap. 💜APOBANGPO

I refuse to keeping giving people hating on BTS attention. The intention was to make money and stop their fandom from expanding the way it has with their solos, making westerners rethink their opinion on the group in a negative way. It makes me wonder who's idea it was and if someone got paid because many are jealous of their success at a time when labels and artists in the west are struggling financially and being rocked with several horrible scandals far worse than singing in English. They are purposely trying to drag BTS down into the mud with them and this is the only thing they could come up with. It makes no sense how the rest of the world is free to take part in all genres and languages freely, but kpop needs to stay in its lane and never expand? That's just segregation and discrimination and it saddens me that this is being publicly spread by a source that claims to be above those things and that some kpop fans even agree with it. Also I just saw that the Times person of the year is Taylor Swift , who is heavily criticized for profiting from a war area. But they're going off about kpop right now? It's so clear what they are doing even more now for me.

Oh, there is no doubt in my mind that someone in the music industry commissioned that podcast. No doubt at all. Probably someone at Billboard. BB just had to give Jimin a plaque for his chart achievements, which they bitterly resented, so naturally they would want to dilute that award with some hate. Can't prove it, of course, but most of what BB and radio do is bought and paid for, so it makes the most sense.

Thank you for your video. You do an amazing job of giving an objective opinion on topics, and articles/podcasts that easily can trigger the best of us. I haven't watched it, and I don't plan on it. giving any attention to it and making an emotional response is what those types of people want. I suggest than any ARMY's that are curious about watching it, probably shouldn't. If you do end up watching it, please don't respond. It's what they want. The more we watch and respond in the comments of their podcast, the more relevancy it gives them. They want us to get emotional and interact with them. Let's not give them the satisfaction, or our energy. I'm going to continue to focus on the positive. I appreciate this video and objective opinion. So many people make a living off of hating on BTS, it's just not worth it to react. Take what Namjoon said about it his live, and don't give it another thought. Here is message from our leader Namjoon - "Let the haters hate, and let the lovers love"- RM What RM thinks about the haters - Live at PTD Las Vegas - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_5gCpoPaPQw.htmlsi=ZtWDFB4ndxJQewTI

I listened to that podcast. Their main thesis to my mind is that if non Americans sing in English, they are selling out, they are not original, etc. so does it mean that to be original Korean bands / singers can only sing in Korean, Japanese bands in Japanese, Latino bands in Spanish etc. K-pop draws much from western music. Based on what they were saying I get the impression that to be really original then K-pop bands should limit themselves to traditional Korean music and instruments. At the end of the day what counts is that BTS has universal appeal. I am not Korean, but I enjoy listening to their music in Korean. I am a native English speaker and I enjoy listening to Jungkook singing in English. Besides it’s not just about his singing. He is a total performer. There’s no one like him right now on the international pop scene. And if non native English speaking bands can break into the English language music scene and top the Billboards, and make a lot of money, kudos to them.

I found the opinion about TXT so strange. "The were made to be BTS little brothers" wtf? Yeah, what were they supposed to be, their hyungs? No matter who came after BTS, they'd be BTS little brothers or sisters. And that is a drag? Was BigHit not allowed to have ANY other group? They are also so different to BTS. And 😱 BH wanted to make money with them, how dare they act like a company business? Like what exactly was the purpose of saying all this? It didn't make no sense at all. And the no success thing is so stupid.

You made a good point about Dana No Last Name and it made me realise that while she wants to keep her identity secret because of bullying, she, herself, is engaging in anonymous bullying when she irresponsibly spouts her unsupported conjectures and “criticisms”. She’s a troll on the internet just going off the cuff but instead of being delegated to where anonymous trolls belong she’s being upheld as an expert by New York Times. Embarrassing.

Next time someone who is not from english speaking country, will comment about "loosing roots" i will say that they should stop writing comments in English cause they are loosing their roots and selling out. Or better ask those critics, why they want to limit BTS's freedom of speech abd freedom of creation? Cause at the end it is their human right to communicate and create freely, and any limitation is limitation of their human rights, i will ask that those who cry about loosing identity

I have not listened to the podcast but had heard enough about it that I knew it would just piss me off and I refused to give it another "listen" for their stats/algorithm. It sounds like this was a case of poor or zero research, very biased opinions and "click-bait" since both k pop and non-kpop fans would be interested in what was being said. After hearing some of the statements it has become clear that the New York Times did not perform their due diligence in properly researching for this podcast and in my opinion it is in poor taste that it was released and in even poorer taste to let it remain up for people to listen to with so much misinformation or generalized statements in its content. Thank you for providing the written transcript so I was able to see all of the statements without supporting that podcast with another "listen"

And why are their streaming numbers higher in S Korea than Ive's?

I really enjoy listening to you. And you 100% correct. Army know facts and nobody should listen to them. I mean even when people were trying to explain to her she wouldn't listen and turned off her comments so she couldn't see them. She doesn't care if she was right or wrong. If she did she won't of shut off her comments when others were giving her facts. All she had to do was apologize for making wrong assumptions and not noting facts or say hey here are the facts but her answer was shut off comments. This podcast may be NY times or whatever but clearly their words don't matter anyways. BtS isn't as big as they are because of just Dancing and singing it everything they have accomplished. I like some of BIG BANGS music but I like Taeyangs more. I'm not into the girls KPOP but I enjoyed a come of New Jean's. Sounds like to me the had a bias and they haven't got the attention since BTS rose to the top but not forget they could have T.O.P. left the group too. As Far as G Dragon. He seems like a nice guy and was good in BIG BANG but I wasn't a huge fan. Yes he is one of the best Krappers but just like even in western artists there are more then one that's Phenomenal. Ok sorry wasn't suppose to be that long lol. Anyways can't wait to see what else you come with later.

Bottom line. HYBE and BTS are a business, yes the music is amazing but, it's a business. I would never say they are sellouts. People are in business to profit; to bring the highest quality to their customers in this case, 'fans'. It's that simple. If you don't like it, it's YOUR choice to not purchase/follow etc., , but to berate a company because they don't live up to your personal standards is not up to anyone outside of that said business. "Mind your own business" is a quote that needs to be adhered to! (comment in general not to this creator/channel)

Thanks to your professionalism, I better understand why the podcast was a disaster from the journalist's point of view and has been badly affecting NYT reputation. I am dilletant, but I pay attention to non-verbal communication (obviously not in full , as there was only audio), and what bothered me mostly was that condescending tone insulting not only the artists, their fans (I wish to go back 55 years and be a screaming teenager again), and the listeners of the podcast.

To be honest, I just read about the worst parts she said. So thanks for your background information as much as possible. That an accredited news portal giving space for that very obvious racist podcast is unbelievable. I am an older person and came to KPop cause of my daughter and then during the pandemic over BTS dynamite, which gave a positive vibe in hard times. When s.o. goes deeper in BTS music, their is so much substance in their songs, the music is very intelligent concepted, the voices, the raps, the dances and sorry but my personal opinion much better than a lot of western music nowadays. Btw Ed Sheeran told once in an interview that it’s impossible to create s.th. new, cause everything was there in the past.I hope the New York Times will take responsibility for that podcast and make an excuse…

People, HYBE never received the ticket money. HYBE would also have insurance for a cancelation. It was Ticket Master that had to refund the money, not BH/HYBE. Just after the sales happened, cancelations due to the pandemic started to happen like a week later. Ticket Master is who you had to get your money back from, not big hit, because they do not receive that until the performance happens. Ask Ticket Master. With TM constantly reselling the tickets up until the last day, they are fully in control of that money. If the artist fails to show up, TM is responsible for refunding everyone. And that is what they did.

Thank you for a beautiful reaction on this podcast. I agree with you, they are not being racist bec it is so clear that Kara is a 2nd gen Kpop fan. The host clearly did not make any research on the topic and takes all the words from the guest as facts. Kara's reactions are similar to those who rant in twitter about BTS and Big Bang. It seems she is throwing at BTS and TXT her frustrations on Big Bang's career not flourishing in the west. Like other BTS antis, what BTS got from the west is what they want for their fav artist. This is very apparent when she mentioned that Diplo contacted Big Bang first but the collab did not happened and now she saw JK got a song from Diplo and doing well in terms of stream. This podcast really lack details from the speaker to prove their point as you say. It seems like this was done with just one motive and that is to discredit BTS. I agree that when you are going to say something that can be controversial there should not be anonymity because it should come with accountability.

Thank you for this analysis. I was asked to view the popcast in question and came away baffled regarding what qualifies one as a K-pop expert, my reply, very little based on what I heard in this popcast. I have no issue with someone giving their biased opinion, but take offense when they pretend it's anything beyond conjecture. I'm pleased over your quick response, since I desired to reply myself, after the smoke cleared. I've shared this reaction with the fans of JKN, a group of JK fans who pledged to keep supporting Golden and Jungkook, during his time of enlistment. I hope fans of all the members will also share this with those who took offense in the above popcast. Keep going lady, you're providing a great service to fans of musicians worldwide who seek to move beyond their borders.

After the incident with NYT's interview with comedian Hassan, where sloppy journalism/slanted editing was outed by him, literally piece by piece in a hr long video, they loss my respect completely. Kara With No Last Name was very hung up on Steve Aoki's Mic Drop remix, from which she never recovered. To listen her, you would think BTS never again made Kpop- and she may be correct in that many of us have been saying BTS is outside the Kpop box, but she really had trouble defining Kpop beyond it being a vibe. What really bothered me was the repeated use of the word "normal" in describing western pop- so is Kpop a non-normal exotic vibe? Good luck defining that genre. As for the English trilogy being representative of their current music, how did she miss the BE album, or that 5 out of 6 solo albums were not totally all-English forays? And were Hobi's Lollapalooza set and Yoongi's D-Day tour examples of artists selling out (and I don't mean sold out tickets)?

Thank you for your take. I haven't read the article or seen the podcast. I don't have a problem that certain people don't like certain musicians etc. but. I think they shouldn't pretend that they are experts etc. It is just an opinion nothing more or less. Except if you personally don't like some music/musicians etc. that's just you..., you can still treat others with respect. I think that person made that "statement" only to get attention and numbers.
