PTX almost never performs with orchestra, because, well, that kind of spoils the point of being a cappella. But there are times to make an exception, and this was clearly one of those times.
He loves orchestras so much I wonder if he wouldn't want to check out when Pentatonix did their lwhole concert with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl a few years back.
The two main complaints I saw about this performance was that the orchestra was overpowering them, or they weren't doing legit a capella. Scott basically told TMZ that it didn't matter, because it wasn't about their ego, it was about honoring the franchise. Although I already had respect for the group, that made it go through the roof.
This performance never seizes to amaze me. If you want to hear Mitch doing crazy high notes and being his flawless self, I suggest you react to either "Gold", and "Aha, live in Singapore". Gold is a Kiiara cover and the original is very heavily edited and tuned. PTX does it live and like nobody's business. Aha live is recorded with a phone, but really good quality. Mitch takes the cake there too!
This might be the sexiest Avi has ever looked. And that’s saying a lot. I love their costumes and this performance is fire. I think the orchestra was unnecessary because they are that good. But I get why they did it and it was amazing!
"I guess Kevin is the light side." Sooo true. I know you were commenting on his wardrobe, but Kevin has the kindest spirit. He definitely lets his light shine.
They’ve got a soft spot in their heart for all things Disney. They’ve sung in parades & weddings there & multiple appearances in Disney tv shows. Also their amazing cover of Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
At the time this performance happened, PTX got some public flak for performing with an orchestra. TMZ even cornered Scott at the airport and asked him about it. He said "what, we were going to turn down an opportunity to perform at the AMAs with the John Williams Orchestra? We were invited and of course we accepted. It wasn't our place to dictate terms." Not verbatim, but that was the gist. I also remember at the time there were the usual "Best of the AMAs" and "Worst of AMAs" and this performance made both lists, depending on the medial outlet. I thought they were wonderful, particularly in the acapella part. They also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks. They sang a song from one of his films "That Thing You Do," again at first acapella , and then with a little combo. You can see Hanks' wife Rita lean over and say "That's Pentatonix!" when they were introduced-leading me to believe she had been talking about them to him before and now he got to put faces to the name.
Best acapella group on the planet + the best movie franchise in the universe. They didn't need the orchestra but it added the big element to the moment. Hallelujah, Imagine, Rather Be, Shallow and you can't go wrong with any of their Christmas songs
I don't mean this in an aggressive way, but: I don't really understand why there are always so many comments saying "they didn't need the orchestra but..." I mean I guess it's better than going all the way and saying you're disappointed in the performance because the orchestra was there (which many other fans and also the media did). but it's still... not understanding the point of the performance at all, don't you think? obviously PTX doesn't _need_ an orchestra or band. everyone knows that. that's why they were given half of the performance to themselves. on the other hand, the orchestra was not an "added element"; the whole segment was about Star Wars, not about PTX, and the full orchestral sound of the score is a massively famous, instantly recognizable trademark of the films. PTX and the John Williams Orchestra were two equally important elements that were brought together: one to represent the franchise's classic, timeless sound and another to give that sound a beautiful contemporary interpretation. sorry for the ramble 😅 I just saw the same wording like four times in this comment section and you were the next one I landed on, so... congrats, lucky winner! haha.
My list of top ten Pentatonix songs every reactor should do (some you've already done): 1. "Hallelujah" (with Avi as bass) 2. "The Sound of Silence" (with Matt as bass) Great songs, great arrangements, all four vocalists have solos that showcase them 3. "Daft Punk" 4. "Bohemian Rhapsody" 5. "Imagine" - beautiful arrangement with a strong message for these times 6. "Evolution of Ariana Grande" (or any other of their *Evolution* videos) - these are medleys on steroid, *recorded live in the studio* in one continuous take, incredible transitions for 20+ songs in 6-7 minutes 7. "Can't Sleep Love" (Popspring concert version) - a taste of their *original music* 8. "Aha" (Star Vista Singapore version) - an iconic concert performance. The combination of Mitch's highs and Avi's lows are phenomenal in this one. 9. "Say Something" - a powerfully emotional rendition that showcases *Kirstin* as the lead. She usually sings harmonies or shares the lead with Scott and/or Mitch 10. "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" - they are excellent at *mash-ups* and this is their best yet, with great beatboxing and bass line, a good introduction for Matt
You do know you can rewatch things right??? Hahahaha. I have actually seen some reactors that will watch it twice in the actual reaction! Great reaction! I recommend all PTX. You should check out their covers of “shallow” and “say something”. They sing with Kevin playing the cello and Kirstie taking most of the leads on those two. :)
And let’s be real. Harrison Ford had never said the name Pentatonix before the show. But being introduced by Han, especially with the disclaimer of being the best selling a cappella group, would be amazing.
Yes, it's clear he was reading what had been written down for him (which, I realize, is always the case in such situations, but it's not always made that evident). Still, he said Pentatonix in 4 syllables (which is not always the case), so I'll be thankful for small blessings. Besides, as you say it's friggin' Han Solo.
Anna Kendrick, plus a bunch of other celebrity fans of PTX, appears in their original song/video SING. The cameos short and a fun challenge to pick out.
I wish I could find the interview where they talk about it, but as they were about to start their performance, and as Harrison Ford was introducing them, Avi got a mis-cue and started walking out on stage...alone. Kirstie said she was going to follow him, but that J-Lo was back there and motioned No to her. Kristine thought J-Lo was just waving hello. Avi quickly zipped back, mortified that he'd just done that in front of an audience of celebrities and idols. He rightfully blamed he stage manager for not exercising better control, lol.
I'll never understand why certain fans and media outlets thought this was some kind of outrage because of the orchestra's presence. this was such a stunning performance. PTX's audio was balanced _really_ well with the orchestra imo; as you pointed out, you could even still hear Kevin's beatboxing, which, along with the bass, is the hardest audio to balance. and Avi came through perfectly clearly as well. frankly whoever was the sound tech for that stage did a mindblowing job, and more people should have been paying attention to _that._ you really pointed out all the amazing things about the way this medley sounded, though, which was satisfying to me because it showed you were listening super closely. I love how enthusiastic you were about it and I love how it brought out your adoration for the franchise. in my opinion, if a diehard Star Wars fan loves it that much, the performance has been 100% successful.
I fully enjoyed nerding out with you. This is a great choice for a beginner Pentaholic. And you are correct, Avi's name is pronounced "Ahh-vee" 👍 Loving your reactions.
Yes, Mitch sings the high notes. Maybe I've missed it but I've never heard Kirstin hit a note higher than Mitch can. For more on Mitch's high notes, check out Aha Singapore live at the Star Vista. (Doing Hallelujah next is good with me too.) btw, it's "AH-vee" and "Cur-stin". I enjoyed how much you enjoyed this.
Kirstin actually can hit higher notes but wasn't as confident about her control. That changed after Broadway. She can hit C6 and D6 as she did in Seasons of Love. Mitch's highest notes are only a little lower.
I love the orchestra , but sometimes it overpowers them too much , so you can hardly hear Kevin and Avi :( . btw. Avi is very good at imitating Darth Vader . We don't mind listening twice in the same reaction when it's short or very good like this one :)) !!
and Mitch is looking like...Mitch! lmao...you nailed that spot on! Always looking different. Definitely think you're ready for Aha! Live in Singapore Star Vista (not throwing any shade Pentaholics but every time I watch that vid, all I can think of when I see Mitch is that he's in a salon chair getting ready for a hair cut, lol)
Love this view, and, oddly enough, as both a massive Pentatonix and Star Wars fan as I am, this is MY first listen of this song. This is the second reaction of yours I've watched. I've recently been fascinated with reaction videos for Pentatonix as they're my favorite group. Yours is the only one I've subscribed to. I really enjoy your treatment of the videos, and could not agree more with you about how amazing this group is. One thing I would like to hear from you a bit more is a breakdown of your thoughts on the musicality of the work. You talk about harmonies a bit, but I really dig the way they ping-pong their voices off each other (the Daft Punk medley demonstrates this beautifully) , and I'd love to hear you talk more about those vocal interactions. Great job!!
As i have said before; Love your reactions and always look forward to seeing them! You have a fun personality and very descriptive in your analysis of the videos. Yes "Hallelujah" and also "Somebody that I used to know".
Off subject (sort of): Anna Kendrick is a PTX fan too & appears in 1 of their videos. For their original song Sing, they released the song, then announced to fans that they wanted videos of fans lip syncing/singing the song, & clips would be used from them as part of the upcoming official video. Anna is one of the celebrities that sent in a video, but you have to know it's her cause you don't see her face well & it's quite fast. She's in a teddy bear onsie in a kitchen, eating cereal & singing while a friend dances behind her singing. 😂 [PTX also then later announced to everyone a day, time & place to just show up where they would be filming if you wanted to join them for a group shoot, so that's another part of the video.]
The group has pretty good range in general - Kevin and Kirstie can both go as high as Mitch goes in songs, but they have different tones when going up there. I'm not sure why they always turn to Mitch to go high - it might be that they like his tone best up there, or that he's more consistent going high live? Scott can also get really high, not as high as the other three, but he can also go much lower. I think he probably has the widest usable singing range in the group lol I'll recommend "Imagine" for Kevin high notes, "Say Something" for Kirstie (not particularly high, but I love her tone in it), and "Problem" for Scott.
You were talking about only Mitch singing the high notes, Kevin has some FANTASTIC falsetto moments. These guys are the best group I have ever heard bar none
react to mitch grassi low notes. pentatonix can't hold us macklemore and ryan lewis cover they rap in this song , pentatonix Starships - Pentatonix (Nicki Minaj Cover), pentatonix problem ariana grande cover, pentatonix calvin harris feat ellie goulding cover
In 2008 my family saw the Boston Pops at Tanglewood and it was Film night WITH JOHN WILLIAMS. So naturally Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. and then he brings out Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw... I was 13 but it was a crazy experience. (This video just reminded me of that)
Lol...and my mistake was watching this before I saw the original vid...you were killing me with the pausing!....I'll be back after watching original video of this! Sounds amazing!!!
They did a performance at country music awards when they announced oakridge boys lifetime achievement award. A short performance but is really good. Cheers from Alberta!
If I'm not mistaken, that's John Williams himself conducting the orchestra. Because performing Star Wars music, as an a Capella group, with the crème de la crème of Hollywood watching (including the original cast), on live television, and with the evil genius who created such indelible music right behind them, creates NO pressure.
Sir, I highly recommend checking out the following, starting with the song listed next to them: Home Free - All About that Bass (cover) Voiceplay - Oogie Boogie Song (cover) Nathan Sharp - Phantom (original) Iris - I'm the Animal (original)
I love pentatonix, can please sometime react to within temptation? here are some titles from there music: angels, raise your banner, memories, paradise, they were planning to go on tour this year togheter whit evanescense. 2 amzing groups.
Since you mentioned Anna K...did you realize PTX was in Pitch Perfect 2 as a competing a cappella group? And they sang the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Theme song for the movie that came out several years ago.
YOU REALLY, REALLY, GOTTA CHECK OUT KIRSTIE TAKING THE LEAD IN "RATHER BE!" (and, while you're at it, check out NEW YEAR"S DAY and CRACKED and REF and SING -- all fabulous original PTX songs!)
Gotta love Star Wars. I agree. They nailed it. The orchestra did drown them out for awhile, which was annoying, but I still loved it. Avi (Ahhh-Vee) really likes Star Wars (but more The Hobbit...lol). Yes, do Hallelujah. Also do Gold. Somebody I used to know (an earlier video of theirs). Say Something. Run to You. the list goes on. Also, can you please react to Avi Kaplan's solo work. It is different than PTX but beautiful. Thanks.
How many energy drinks did you have before starting this reaction? I’m 75 and can’t listen that fast. I’d never seen this before, thank you for sharing. Can you post a link to this? I’d love to hear it again.
A masterclass...jedi level Kirstin and Kevin can reach higher notes than Mitch, but Mitch is both unique and consistent. I think they have Mitch hit the high notes for artistic reasons. It's just so distinctive.
Considering your growing appreciation of Acapella and your stated love for Star Wars, please look up "John Willams is the Man) especially the original by Moosebutter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PGYAPr6UKhs.html While they don't have the vocal excellence of PTX, the humor makes it worth the time
