You said it - "the beauty of Matteo's delivery". That's the most striking thing as far as I'm concerned. What might appear mechanical in other hands sounds magical in his because his sense of phrasing and dynamics - and his ability to execute them at will - set him apart from all but the greatest. I get the same feeling listening to Matteo's playing as I do listening to Eric Johnson... and that is saying something, since I can't think of any guitarists with a more beautiful sound than Eric J, regardless of whatever style he happens to be playing.

This guy reinvented guitar. This is beyond next level. I was a bit sceptic because of him doing covers. But his own work now on his first album is insane.. And then you just know.... this is unearthly. I really can't recall any guitar player that comes even close to his technique. WITH 3 FINGERPIKKING but making it sound as a pick??? What? his improv boxes, schales, chromatisism, arpeggios..harmonics... creativity, all blended so well together and so clean. F*cking insane man! You know, Tina S can cover music really good, but this is another universe. And he is just 27...

I’ve been following Matteo for months now.. his playing is so amazing to listen to, but when you see him playing it, it is a whole new game.. I heard of his playing through Mike Seal , who is another finger style player with the Jeff Sipe Trio... Matteo reminds me of how I felt when I first saw Stanley Jordon play live years ago.. What a future this young man has in front of him.. the guitar is still alive and well..

His right hand technique is from an old classical guitar style that has been used by many Spanish players and is the beginning of the claw and chicken picking style of that the Country players have popularized in recent times. It allows for a very consistent string attack and the facility to play with a lot of string skipping and raking in a seemingly effortless manner. Mind blowing that he is still in the infancy of his musical creativity.

Joe Bonamassa is a great, great musician, a great guitar player with great feeling - which is the most important thing of them all when playing a lead guitar, besides having perfect accuracy and technique. music is a language of emotions, transferred from the musician (and the composer) to the listener. emotions that can't be described in letters and words. directly connected to us, without the need for interpretation. but, this dude is playing in a higher league.

I'm absolutely agree: Matteo plays incredibly clean and in completly relax! I heard the sound of each note more clean than pick! Bonamassa said a right thing: Mancuso reinvented the Guitar. I say he bring us the future, he playd with his soul and using an Amazing mix of Scales like pentatonic, esatonic, underdominant and a few of variosus types of scales in ambient of 5 of dominant and all relatives triton scales. But he mix everythink and we here like he raccontasse una storia, with asks and respons , continue tensions and resolutions. Ok the talent but Is evident the great study there Is in what he does. Nobody can only think what Mancuso plays in a nano second. I think Is the best actualy guitarrist in the story, for how he use the right hand too. We musicians are Happy becouse we can live in act a so Amazing genie now...and he Is only 26 Years hold. Alleluia my dear guys, Jesus Is back!!!😜👍😜👍👋❤️❤️😘

This is the first video of Matteo that I came across and was blown away from the start of the video. I had just discovered him a few years ago. I never knew this guy existed. He definitely has his own style of picking. His father is no slouch on guitar by no means either. I believe his father was his inspiration as is clearly noticeable through his playing. His playing does have an Eric Johnson vibe to it, only because of his clear and precise finger picking that eliminates the pick noise when the strings are struck. Just phenomenal. Watch/Listen to The Chicken, his three piece band. The bass and drummer are equally as talented as Matteo.

Matteo started playing because of his father. He was a little kid, so seein' his dad playing fingerstyle thought that was the way to play guitar. He found out later that guitar can be played with a pick: so he simply didn't know :D Anyway, he developed his own fingering technique: the "bass" one is for fast runs on close strings, while the other one opens new way to approach sweeping since he can selectively string skip (at least on his own words). Still waiting for his debut album which should be on the way: never enjoyed a "jazzy" player as much as Matteo

The take away for me is to use your technical prowess as a means to enhance the overall musical quality or phrasing as opposed to some stand alone pyrotechnics display that we see all too often on youtube. His interpretations are super clean, creative, awe inspiring, but I still feel like I can groove and tap my feet to it all.

Another thing I noticed, I think he is double picking with the first finger and adding notes with the second finger during the fast stuff. A lot of fusion players that use a pick do something similar by using the Hybrid Picking technique where the main notes are played with the pick (thumb and first finger together) and secondary notes are played with the second finger. Already you can see the disadvantage pick users have. It takes them three fingers to do what Matteo does with two.

A right hand like Paco de Lucia and Joe Pass, with otherwordly harmonic/melodic synthesis in his lines - its almost like a stream of conciousness, a conduit with something transcendental - he's that good. He really cops some Robben Ford and Frank Gambale vibes on this one whilst staying true to himself. He does have that Eric Johnson like clarity, and a kinda similar full rich tone, a bit more midrange dense perhaps.

00:11 "... new generation doesn't like a pick..." - I think in Matteo's case, it's more the fact that he started with classical guitar and went on to realise that he could accomplish technically what he needed to (and more!) with his dual fingerstyle playing. I say 'dual' because of course Matteo uses at least two different techniques for plucking the strings - one at 'side' of the strings and the other with his hand positioned above the strings. Rest position and ... I forget the other. Anyway, the guitar is amazing, not just technically of course, but his musical 'mind', his ability to execute what he hears in his head with his hands and his ability to choose excellent notes.

You are right, but I would consider it a disadvantage of the technique rather than a flaw with the player. By hand picking he's developed the ability to execute insane licks with a stunning precision and taste, I guess having to use a fret wrap is a very acceptable compromise. BTW, if you check some of his posts he can do without if he plays clean, though he totally needs it for distortion.
