As a 7 year old in 1972, when my big sister brought this home and played it for me it was astonishing! 3 songs on an album without any "single" that could be played on AM radio??? FM stations at the time were the only ones that were brave enough to play this record at the time. Deregulation of radio soon ended that by the '80's as more radio stations were eventually bought by major corporations.

Yes symphonic live is a must have. Yessongs Fragile Big generator Live at Montreux Union Anderson, Brufort, Wakeman and Howe. This album comes just before the album Union. Union is the first album of the reunited Yes. Drama is a drama as far as I can remember. I haven’t listened to it for decades so that might be an indication. And you and I could be, in my humble opinion, their best song. Best heard live. You said that this was Rush territory but it’s more the opposite. This was released before the classic lineup from Rush in 1974. Siberian Khathru is also a classical . I would like to buy cd’s in the sleeve of an LP. Best of both worlds.

I still remember buying this album in 1972. You have to remember there was absolutely nothing else like it. I know it sounds stupid but I had a intellectual and spiritual epiphany while listening to it. This album skewed my whole way of thinking and changed my life. You're having a different reaction because you've heard so much that's come after. A form of Yes still tours the world today (at least when COVID is over) and Steve Howe, the guitarist, is still playing with the current version of the band today. Unfortunately Chris Squire, bass, has passed away from an aggressive form of leukemia abouit 5 or 6 years ago but a player named Billy Sherwood was hand picked by him to take his place. Jon Anderson (voice) is not with them but he is still out in the world producing music. Yes has had many, many members but still manage to have the Yes sound although the fan base is splintered heavily because people had their favorite lineups and are not willing to accept substitutes. I personally do not ascribe to that philosophy.. These particular songs are all incredible live.

@@JimNewstead the Relayer album comes closest to this one for me. If you haven't heard it yet I would really suggest you do so. It also has three incredible pieces on it although thematically it's much different. Different drummer, different keyboard player. Musically it's a little like Mahavishnu Orchestra in places especially on Soundchaser. I have been a hard core follower of Yes for years and although I realize the band is in it's twilight I will continue to support it. The mere fact that even after all the lineup changes and and disbanding a it still rises from the ashes after all these 53 years boggles my mind. Of all the other great groups that appeared in that time frame they're still my favorite.

"And you and I" says, "The preacher trained in all to lose his name - The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same," is a true, but somewhat humorous line. "All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you" is inspirational for a young person trying to understand who they were/are. The music / lyrics may seem spacey to some, it is all about finding one’s way. It took me a while to like Siberian Khatru, it’s not inspirational (to me), but I do enjoy it as well. You can imagine how the following lyrics from “And You and I”…: Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid, As a moment regained, and regarded both the same Emotion revealed as the ocean maid A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you. …helped a young man find his way. Thanks, Jim, for bringing this back to my attention!

Records are an analog sound source, a smooth continuous waveform. Digital sound sources are like a series of continuous steps. Your mind isn't consciously aware of it, but you can FEEL the tiny microsecond gaps between the coded pulses. Therefore, that natural ambiance, the warmth of analog is lost to some extent. Our current tech is much better these days because we have processors which can sample the sound source at a much higher bit rate. Those tiny gaps are now almost inaudible and much harder to sense--but there's still nothing quite like a good quality vinyl record played on a high-quality turntable, with a clean, fresh needle cartridge, played through a good amp with a low SNR (signal to noise ratio) and then into studio quality speakers or a set of full-spectrum phones. The way the record is mastered (mixed, balanced, EQ'd, and compressed) also has a LOT to do with it. Mastering a vinyl album meant making sure that there were no big transients (peaks) in the signal, else the cutting head for the lacquer master (the template for the pressing) might dig too deep or too wide for the needle on the turntable to follow the groove precisely. Those seemingly minor variations in the grooves are continuous and that's what provides the warmth we feel when we hear this on a good system. I'm personally very glad that you enjoyed this so much, Mr. Newstead. I watched your face very carefully and saw a whole range of emotions there as these songs played: surprise, wonder, awe, delight, serenity, even a kind of subdued ecstasy. They got you GOOD, didn't they? This RESONATED--and that's exactly what was intended. The sounds tickled your pleasure center, your temporal lobes, your frontal lobes; in fact, your whole brain was lit up like a Christmas tree. I don't have to look at an MRI or a PET image to know this because we've all had the same experience. This music hits us right at the heart of where we live inside our heads, the seat of consciousness; the very definition of what it means to be human and use all our senses to feel something magnificent. They'll be listening to this music a thousand years from now and feeling the same things we feel and that's utterly beautiful. Welcome to the Club, Mr. Newstead. Ain't it just grand to be human and experience things like this?

Yes, with the black cover, is their first album. The pieces are there, but haven’t come together yet, especially Bruford and Squire. Underrated Peter Banks on guitar, with similar ideas to Steve Howe that makes it still sound like Yes, and Tony Kaye on keyboards. Yesterdays includes tracks from that album plus their second, Time and a Word. Yesterdays also has their version of America by Simon and Garfunkel which is essential listening. The Yes Album is the first “Yes” album proper. Add Steve Howe. There’s still a bit of the early Yes creeping in, but for the most part it’s where everything comes together. Yours is No Disgrace, Perpetual Change, and Starship Trooper are the essential tracks. I’ve Seen All Good People was their first “hit” song, but live versions are better. Clap is the first of Steve’s acoustic solo pieces. Fragile, which wasn’t in your pile, was their first true classic that led directly to Close to the Edge. The first with Rick Wakeman. Roundabout, South Side of the Sky, Heart of the Sunrise, and Long Distance Runaround are essential. Each also has a “solo” piece. The Fish, which immediately follows Long Distance Runaround, is all bass, along with Bruford’s drums. The version of The Fish on Yessongs, a triple live album following the Close to the Edge tour, is the definitive version in my mind. The same for Yours is No Disgrace (originally from the Yes Album). The guitar solo was slightly edited, which tightens it up to perfection. Tales from Topographic Oceans is a bit controversial, although perhaps less so now than when it was released. It’s four epic tracks across two LPs. Side 3 (The Ancient) is Yes at their most experimental. 1 and 4 are the key tracks, although all work well, and particularly as one long-form piece. Alan White replaced Bill Bruford. Relayer, which also wasn’t in you pile, was Yes heading toward jazz fusion, or at least as much as Yes could. Gates of Delirium is another masterpiece. Rick was out, Patrick Moraz in. Going for the One has what Jon Anderson has called Yes’ best epic/masterpiece - Awaken. Turn of the Century is also essential. There isn’t a bad track on this album either… Rick was back. Tormato, hmm. Some good ideas, but this is one that will probably have to grow on you. The production is the biggest problem, very trebly, combined with the band never quite seeming to gel as in the past. Both Steve and Rick have commented that they weren’t listening to each other, and everybody was trying to play too many notes. The songs themselves are pretty strong, though. Live they fared a bit better, though not all have been performed. Drama is fantastic and pointed to what the ‘80s could have been. Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman had left, with the Buggles (Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes) replacing them. Prog meets new wave and it works amazingly well. Unfortunately, Trevor had difficulty singing the older Yes stuff live and by the UK tour his voice was shot. The fans turned, he decided he was a better producer than singer, and Steve and Geoff went to form Asia. All that set the stage for 90125 and the new Yes with Trevor Rabin and the return or Tony Kaye (keyboards on the 3 pre-Rick Wakeman albums), although Trevor’s Rabin and Horn (who produced) played most of the keyboards on the album. A classic in its own right, but quite a different Yes. Hearts is the song that feels like it has the most Jon Anderson influence who joined the project late in the process. I don’t know what Tull you picked up, but also essential listening.

For the record, 90125 was the album catalog number, used as the album title. Siberian Khatru opened the shows of many YES tours. Roundabout usually closed the shows. My first Yes concert was in 1977 for the Tormato album (the tour was called "Tourmato"). CDs are free from pops and scratches, but are much tinnier and harsh. LPs have a much richer sound in my opinion. I felt nostalgia when I heard the first crackle. Loved it. Trust me, as I probably played this album 50+ times before becoming the first person I knew to get a CD player in 1985. Very few albums were released on CD at the time, so my first CDs were Dark Side Of The Moon and Paradise Theater by Styx. With great anticipation from all of the hype I put Pink Floyd on......... and was flattened with disappointment. All the depth was gone. The words are true...LPs are superior in reproduction quality. CDs are more convenient and easier to keep scratch-free. Listening for 55 years now. Peace out. Let the music play.

Don't forget to check out the older Genesis albums, they're really great. I think their early stuff is overlooked because people somehow negate it due to their later pop music. This is assuming you aren't already familiar with it of course.

Close to the Edge is my favorite album and favorite song by Yes. Siberian Khatru gave it good run for the top spot and held the top spot for years. It's kind of a toss up for me but Siberian Khatru has been 2nd for about 10 years now. In any case I recommend listening to the Yessongs live versions after the studio versions. While the sound quality is not as good live it's obviously a better performance for all 3 tracks.

Just as a little point of interest, 'Khatru' is Yemini Arabic for 'as you wish' . After discovering what it meant Jon Anderson said it fitted very well with the song.....

I won't comment on all the records, just the ones with something I like and actually own. Yes (1969) features Peter Banks on guitar and Tony Kaye on organ and piano. I didn't say keyboards because Kaye wasn't interested in such things beyond those two instruments to the chagrin of the band. And that was one of the reasons he was eventually replaced by Rick Wakeman, who WAS interested in all sorts of keyboards and technology. Peter Banks has a very jazzy, warm guitar style that I loved very much. This album features a superior version of The Byrds' "I See You", a lovely ballad called "Yesterday and Today", a Beatle tune called 'Every Little Thing, and the album opener, "Beyond and Before" a good, direct (for Yes) and hard rocking tune. I love this record. The Yes Album (1971) introduced Steve Howe, who instantly made the band better by introducing more variety in guitar playing and adding another strong backing voice. This is the beginning of proper Yes. After "Close to the Edge" this is their best album. Fragile (1971) was one the first of Yes experimentations with self indulgence. The only songs I like here are the group efforts. The individual tracks (except "Mood for a Day) are just filler and not worth writing about. Tracks 1 (their most popular song ever) and 4 from Side A, and tracks 2, 4 and 5 from Side B are the ones to listen. This record should have been released as an EP with just those songs. I realize I just made many, many people angry with these comments. There are people who swear by Tales from Topographic Oceans, but the only thing I can stand to listen to in that record is a Steve Howe Spanish guitar solo three quarters into Side Three's "The Ancient". Otherwise, bleh. Going for the One (1977) has a beautiful song called '"Wonderous Stories" in which Jon Anderson shows off just how good a vocalist he had become by then. Drama (1980) features only Chris Squire form the original line-up. Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star) joined on vocals and keyboards. For a band that I do not really recognize as Yes, they produced two of the most decidedly Yes-like songs ever written, "Machine Messiah" and "Tempus Fugit". 90125 (1983) is the least "Yes-like" record ever made by a band named Yes. Ironically it featured more members from the original lineup since 1971. To me "proper Yes" necessitates the presence of Anderson, Squire and Howe together. This album features a guy named Trevor Rabin (not Steve Howe) on guitar and vocals, and his 80s pop material and sensibilities dominates this record. As a pop record, it's actually really good and I've always loved it. Even if it's not "proper yes", there are "Yes" moments here and there. Side A is really good. The CD version of Relayer (2003 reissue) includes a song called "Soon". After "And You and I" it is by far my favorite Yes song.

I like a lot of the songs in the live version better (despite the poor sound quality). I absolutely love your reviews of CttE! Yes’ music and lyrics are timeless. They are simply unique and beautiful. I was lucky enough to go see the tour for this album in Chicago. What a night that was! Rick in his gold sequined cape did a couple of tracks from 6 Wives. The entire evening couldn’t have been more perfect. The look on you face at 21:25 on the And You and I side was precious. Welcome to the Yes fan club, lol. This year, 2021, I had the honor and privilege to see Jon Anderson - in July - and Rick Wakeman - in November - at Woodstock’s ( yes, that one) Bearsville Theater. Both concerts were beyond amazing. From Close to the Edge until now both artists can still bring the crowd to their feet multiple times. We can only hope and pray that the individual band members remain in good health so that the rest of we mere mortals can pray that they can join up once again. To see that would definitely be on my bucket list! Thanks, Jim, for your ‘Reaction’ series. I quite enjoy it. Personally, I recommend giving a listen to “Awaken” - another Yes masterpiece. Peace, love, and light to you. :-).

Your face hearing the music was just like mine back in 1970 something. I was 16 and working in a shoe shop and wanted something more than the mundane chart music. A colleague said listen to CttE and there it began. I couldn't grasp what I was listening to but had to hear more. 4 play throughs later and singing those slightly bizarre lyrics and I was hooked. Best of all I was forced to wear headphones (dad hated the racket!) and experienced the sound dancing around my brain. I tried to listen to each instrument as well as the whole sound. Got my best mate and brother hooked too. Enjoy the journey but as someone else has said do it chronologically then you'll see how they developed the Yes sound. Long live that bass!!

All you say about the visceral joy of records is true, but there is also a different quality between digital and analogue. I bought into the digital world about 40 years ago because it all sounded new at the time. BUT... when I thought about it, my DX7 digital keyboard had about three different sounds that could cut it as a lead, piano, sax and harmonica whereas everything on my synthesiser sounded like lead if I wanted it to be. It's like the sonic difference between steps and a slide, it's why the Bladerunner soundtrack still has bollocks when the Beverley Hill Cop soundtrack doesn't.

As many have said before me, Jim, it is so enjoyable watching such an enthusiastic reaction to music to which I have been listening for 50 years or so. "Close to the Edge" is not only my favourite Yes album, but my favourite album! The fact that you seem to have enjoyed "Siberian Khatru" in particular might be because drummer, Bill Bruford, enjoyed it the most and, perhaps subconsciously, played it with more gusto, thus driving it more. I hope you will enjoy other Yes albums as much. You also mentioned the bass sound several times in your "Close to the Edge" listen: Chris Squire (sadly no longer with us) was an exceptional bass player, unique both in sound and style. He was also a very good singer, unusually for such a big man (6' 7") taking the high harmony parts.

Jim, at 06:05 In the Leslie rotary speaker-treated background vocals, I've always heard "Flobadob," from Bill & Ben(and now you will, too!) Interestingly, re: Yes, and analog vs. digital, around the turn of the new century, the subject came up, and Steve Howe told a story about how he'd invited an old friend out to his house (the one with his recording studio), they were relaxing, reminiscing, and the friend asked him to cue up some old classic Yes, so he dug up his own copy of the Close to the Edge master, and his friend kept commenting on how "audiophile" it all seemed, and how he'd never appreciated that back in the day. He said it was at that moment, he realized that throughout all the years he'd been doing music, he'd never actually heard much of it on anything but studio-grade equipment, in studio-treated control rooms (like the one in his house), and that most people back in the '70s/early '80s had rubbish stereos, rubbish rooms for listening, and they just hadn't been listening to the same thing, really. So summing it up, paraphrased, he said something like "So when CDs came out, if that meant fans were now getting anywhere nearer what I'd always been hearing, then I think that's wonderful . . ." Never forgotten that.
