Same where I'm at. Appointments are having to be mades 2-3 months in advance. There is a person in a neighboring county who does "bulk" sterilizations not taking anymore Appointments for female cats and dogs. (They have it where they only do a single sex and species on a particular day. Makes it possible to offer the service for less than $100 per animal.)

I would say keep contacting different vet clinics. Maybe it's regional (I'm in Ontario in a small town), but a spay here is well under $300 and a neuter is even less. If you watch for a microchip clinic, you can get them chipped for $25/cat. Sometimes shelters/rescue organizations will also offer what they call "spay/neuter vouchers" where they do cover some of the cost.
@deendrew36
@deendrew36 Год назад
Emily, the Spay Neuter clinic is where everyone goes in our city for neutering and spaying. It is so much cheaper than the vet. The problem is, there is a long wait list. I heard that Brockville spay neuter clinic is much shorter, and it is actually DRIVE THROUGH! Lolol! We are bringing our cat there. Also…go a bit out of the city for your vet. I go to Manotick, but I hear great things about Carp, Perth, etc. for my cat’s vax, it was a couple hundred bucks.
@Chaotic_Pixie
@Chaotic_Pixie Год назад
So happy to see someone from Canada who can offer some useful information. I hate the feeling of wanting to offer help and advice but the CA and US systems are definitely different, which is frustrating. Like, here in the US, there are mobile neuter vans. You need to have an established vet who has signed off on them being healthy enough (which they can do when they get their shots and whatnot), but its like $70 for a male cat and $120 for female (more invasive). The waitlist is LONG though. And here, rescues can't adopt out intact animals (at least the places I've lived). They must all be fixed. I just wish that were also true for animal shelters (they're different here in the US) because the voucher you get from the animal shelter won't come close to covering the cost of a neuter, much less a spay.

@@Chaotic_Pixie I am sure it is very different between the two countries. I think I live in the same city even as Emily, so it is easy to give a recommendation. It is just nuts how you either have to pay through the nose, or wait forever. Our vets are super crowded these days, I don’t know why? More people with pets since pandemic? I don’t know.
@Chaotic_Pixie
@Chaotic_Pixie Год назад
@@deendrew36 definitely more ppl with pets or more pets in pet households plus vet medicine has one of the highest rates of burnout in any profession. I think NICU and ER nurses are the only professions with higher burnout rates? I’m not entirely sure exactly where they fall, but vets & vet techs are in the top 10. You go through as much education as an MD, more if you’re going to specialize in big animals or exotics or a specialty like Ortho or Ophthalmology etc to make half or less what an MD does with the same amount of school debt. At least that’s the case in the US.

I would really recommend looking into more rescues besides the SPCA. I don't know how it all works in Canada, but I know the rescue where I got my dog who was not originally fixed like she was supposed to be when I adopted her did the surgery for free. I also know they do free Spay/Neuter events throughout the city during the year. Also my old neighbors cat was also impregnated and she needed to get fixed since she lived with a boy cat and they did that for free because my neighbor couldn't afford it, but it needed to be done.

I’m a bit behind on my videos right now but hopefully you’ll see this (and it won’t be too late!). I used to do a lot of kitten rescue here in the US so I’ve dealt with a lot of the issues you’re experiencing with the kittens. I would look online to see if there are any low cost spay/neuter clinics around you. Where I live there is one that travels between several main cities. I don’t know where in Canada you live but, rural areas usually have them for barn cats. Depending on how you feel about it, you can also try looking into TNR services. (Trap, Neuter, Release). In some places they will provide low cost spay/neuters for found kittens though they will likely require them to have their ears clipped to indicate they have been fixed. It’s not my favorite method due to the ear clipping but… if it’s that or having to abandon the kittens I’ve always viewed it as the lesser of two evils.

Veterinary care is expensive; years ago, over Xmas my cat ate some string and it became entangled with internal organs, by the time the issue was resolved I spent close to 10 thousand dollars. I was lucky in that I was in the process of changing jobs, so for a short period had a double income and received a signing bonus. I think that is one of the challenges of pet ownership in that most people are not aware of the costs if our fur babies need medical care. I hope you are able to find a solution.

At least in California, the shelters aren’t full because people are returning their pets. It’s because during lockdown, people didn’t sterilize their animals so the number of puppies and kittens is way up. Also, there’s a veterinarian shortage - it’s a super high attrition job and lots of vets quit during the pandemic. Plus there are not enough vet schools to meet the need. I used to volunteer at my local SPCA so got the scoop. I love the kitten content!

@BookswithEmilyFox I had three for about 6 years and then added a fourth which was a girl and feel in love with her. Moved out started a sanctuary and ended up adopting 12 more cats in the first 6 months and then 11 more 2 months after that. Which was very fast paced. So I had 1 adult cat, 3 senior cats and 33 kittens. So getting them all fixed was a big about of change. But I found a vet that gives a sanctuary discount so the 11 got $100 for males and $150 for females. Then rest of them were $250 or more. The most expensive was my fourth cat Nova she was $600. And never again did I go to that vet. I made loads of calls and did lots of research and I ended up at a vet an hour and a half away but. Being able to take half of my cats to the vet in one day and only take like 45mins for all their checkups and vaccines is great.

I'm not sure, but I know when we got our cat fixed after she had her babies they didn't want her to nurse them anymore. Because of the healing after the procedure and because I believe it messed with her as she was still producing milk. Of course, they were much older kittens at the time and we had already started to ween them off. So they were around eight to nine weeks old.

Veterinary bills are extremely expensive, it is indeed quite much. I was paying 150 euro due to an appointment and medicine for the cat's ears, so I could imagine that an op for female esterilization cat would be so much. I heard the esterilisation for male cats is a more simple procedure so it should be cheaper than a female one. I wonder if a pet health insurance would help with the costs. The kitties are adorable though, it is so wholesome to have pets. Another hidden cost is paying someone to care for your pets should you travel away from home on vacations, in a cat hotel they often come back with something and then you have to take them to the vet and pay the extra costs from that.

In the US PetSmart and PetCo and Tractor Supply have vet clinics for vaccines at a discounted price. If you have any of those in Canada, it might be worth looking into. Also, I think I saw a couple of people mention this, but some vets have spay/neutering clinics again for a discounted rate. Good luck and thank you for being such a good Kitty Granny 😂

See if there are spay and neuter clinics near you! They are set up for more than just one or two procedures a day and so are frequently much cheaper and easier to get appointments to. It's basically a clinic that ONLY does sterilization and related stuff.

When you find a vet, check if they have a health plan or something similar. In the UK some vets have them, it's like £10/20 a month and it covers anual vaccines and other stuff. Then, when and if you can, I highly recommend insurance, even if it's the lower coverage, it's worth it. (and because mama cat and kitty, or kitty if you keep one, are going to be spayed/neutered, the premium is lower). I also read Remembrance of Earth's Past, totally agree with you. I think part of the issue was the writing was the translation because I found the 2nd book easier to read and only at the end realised it had a different translator.

It might be worth seeing if your city has its own sub on reddit - or any of the cat/pet care subreddits - and asking if anyone has advice on how/where you can get the cats neutered, and whether there is more affordable options.

Dawn dish soap is incredible! It’s like the Windex in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I can’t believe the price you quoted for sterilization. YIKES!! The good news is you don’t have to do it all at once. It’s actually good to hold off on the boys for a while. I mean, not TOO long because they’ll eventually start spraying and you don’t want that. But I think my two boys were nearly six months old when I had it done. It allowed them to develop more fully, plus they got the big fat tomcat heads which are insanely cute. Enjoy the kittens - they look fantastic!!

If you can't get the mother sterilised (? However thats spelled) but she wants/demands to go outside again and youre worried about her getting pregnant again: pills exist! No clue how there called or how you could get them, but an antibaby-medication for cats exists! We had a cat who couldnt get sterilised and we gave her that pill I think every three weeks or so, but that was about ten years ago.

May not hurt to hit up other shelters and rescues about how to get the fuzzy butts fixed and shots update at an affordable price. Someone at one of them may have information, or even a way, to get them cared for. Also, not sure how different the vets in Canada are different from those here in the U.S.' but I've found that prices can be very different between the vezs for the same thing. FYI: female cazs are usually more than the males, because it is a more invasive surgery. If she is in heat or preggers than it'll be a bit more. When speaking with the rescue/shelter, it might help to explore the possibility of the kittens you aren't fully adopting be adopted out through the shelter or rescue. You could then just foster them while they await being adopted by their forever family. Shelters usually assist with the medical needs of those in foster. Would also make finding good homes easier. (I've been fortunate to meet those who adopted kitties I've fostered too. Most have been kind to even let me know how the kitty is doing after about a week.) Also, look into kitty recovery suits/pjs before they are fixed. They are a whole lot easier to used on the ladies instead of the cone after surgery. Lol, also not likely to be taken off by the little booger.

The protagonist of For Your Own Good reminds me of An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good 😁 Also you could foster the kitties while they're up for adoption. They'd love it ❤

Jeez those are some prices, in my country for male cats 20 for female ones 30 bucks the sterilization. Paid for my dogs microchip and yearly vaccine 20 bucks and the vet came to my house.

Jeez. I know you are not in the US but there are so many places around me in Michigan that will do like $60 spay/neuter. Just so people can bring in their cats or ferals so they aren't making so many more kittens. But they are so adorable!

Here in Mexico, sterilization costs around 40 dollars and there are many cats on the streets because people do not want or cannot afford sterilization 🫤. Where I live, around 7 or 8 cats arrive and I feed them because it makes me sad to see them in the streets. Unfortunately I can't afford sterilization 🫥

You can have 4 cats 😊. I have 3 (one looks like Mamma Cat minus the thumbs) and it’s great!!! I rescued them from a box on the side of the road in a neighborhood. They were about 2 weeks old. Bottle feed and all! 3 girl kitties. They keep each other company. There’s just lots of cat hair and poop with that many 😂
