As your plants just kick off, it often means your garden starts filling up with weeds, too. But weeds aren’t all bad news - they can tell you a lot about your soil. Tino interprets a few weeds for us:
Capeweed and Stinging Nettles are signs of nutrient-rich, cultivated soil. If the growth is stunted or leaves are yellow, it would show the soil is lacking in nitrogen.
Thistles, chickweed and purslane also indicate fertility.
Clover and other weeds that fix their own nitrogen can be a sign the soil is lacking in nitrogen.
Poor soils that lack structure will support weeds such as dandelion, flatweed, oniongrass,
Dock and plantain indicate the soil is likely to be acidic and heavy.
Sedges and nut grass are usually found in waterlogged heavy soils.
Bracken is often found in soils that are nutrient depleted, but also when it’s been disturbed or over-grazed. However the bracken, like many other weeds, is colonizing the site and will protect it against the sun and weather erosion.
Perennial weeds such as bracken live for more than one year, so are better indicators of soil condition than annual weeds, which may be a one-off fluke brought in by birds or the wind.
A mixed community of weeds with many species is a better indicator of soil health than just one species.
Tino slashes and mows weeds before they flower then chip them out by hand, but he also tries to squeeze them out by planting densely.
Joi makes a gnocchi from the nettles, and the rest are composted.
Tino also makes a DIY fertilizer by filling a netting bag with weeds, weighing it down in a bucket of water for at least two days, and stirring regularly. Use the DIY liquid fertiliser on the garden or compost heap. It’s a great way of killing off weeds with seed heads. The greener and fresher the better.

I agree 100%... weeds are not an enemy to the gardener but a very useful plant to recover bad soil areas and they make awesome compost.

Great and informative rundown of weeds Tino! I've been watching Weeds the TV Series but they didn't teach me about Weed Teas! We're going to get so high on all this knowledge we'll be potheads in no time!

Fascinating! I grow some weeds (like nettle) because they're useful. Good to know they're good for the soil as well.

Beautiful video! On my channel I did a video on getting rid of an in an invasive plant using the mowing down before flowering technique and so far it has worked great.

It doesn't need to be from a bag of manure from the side of the road? I used to be a loader driver for Brunnings and some of their product comes from your local dump and it sure hasn't been composted properly! I can't understand why companies mix bark and woodchip with cow manure from feedlot? They basically get it at cost price, so why add garbage to an already perfect product?

... and so I've long given up all that rubbish about using the type of weed to diagnose your soil problems.

Awesome info. What does it mean when your soil lacks structure, and what can you do about it? Love your show, thank you 😀🌺👌

Soil structure refers to the way soil particles group together to form small crumbs through to large blocks. Some soils resemble a large, solid, featureless mass-referred to as massive-and have little or no structure. For example, very sandy soils have no structure because sand grains do not cling together.Good soils fit in between the two extremes. A well-structured soil breaks up easily and has a definite shape (such as granular or blocky) and size (1-60mm).Good structure is important, as it allows water to soak into the soil and excess water to drain away. It also allows air movement through the soil. Soil, air and water are vital for healthy plant growth and nutrient supply. All soil types can be improved by adding organic matter to it. Organic matter can take many forms, for example leaf mould made from decomposed leaves; farmyard manure that can be guaranteed to be free of all traces of herbicides; or good old-fashioned garden-made compost. A Brazilian author wrote a book about indicating plants, basically a guide on how to identify soil problems from the pioneer plantas that grow in it! Fascinating and super useful! I wonder if there's anything of the sort for the Australian ecosystems...
