Well said. I went to see it because I'm a huge Michelle Yeoh fan and wanted to see her play a role much different than the martial arts movies I grew up watching her in. I grew up in Southern Cali right near the border, and I was raised around nothing but Blacks, Latinx, Filipinos, Samoans, Cambodians, Loatians, and a bunch of mixed black/white, black/asians , black/latinx folks. I have black cousins and a sibling who are mixed with Asian-- Filipino and Korean specifically. With that being said, anti-Blackness is a fact of life in the various Asian communities. I'm way older than you Seren (extra grown, lol) so I grew up during a time when the military was the pathway for many Asian families to get citizenship. (late 70's early 80s). My aunt was one of the first black nurses in the Navy, and she told me when I was still in elementary school that all immigrants learn early on to inoculate themselves from any association with blackness, b/c you already now--white supremacy. That means learning how to say nigger with a quickness. Worshipping white/lighter skin and staying entrenched on that colorism bullshit. Moving away as fast as you can from any neighborhood that has black people in it to get near the white areas. Act racist towards black people because they believe that model minority bullshit. Being in SoCal I got to witness it every day. Early on I watched Asian kids from various backgrounds embrace whiteness hard af. MTV had just started so they were caping hard for all things white--music, fashion, food, speech, racist behavior. But then, a funny thing happened on the way to whitelandia. Hip Hop blew up. Black cool was back. And guess what? Using black things was cool, but they still weren't fucking with us...except for some black men. The military allowed a lot of Black men to marry Asian women from all over and bring them to the hood. Filipino women in particular (who were 1st generation) were marrying and having children with a lot of black men in my city, (thus how I have certain cousins and a sibling) . So because I was raised around various Asians, was in and out of their houses, eating their food and going to their family and civic functions, I got to see how my mixed Black/Asian peeps had to navigate around anti-blackness in Asian communities. (I am still laughing at some folks online who equate being in a classroom, or seeing a black person at a store is growing up with them so, therefore, they can speak performative minstrelsy, aka the blaccent--I know I probably spelled that wrong but I'm typing fast). Black aesthetics/culture became a cool commodity to play dress up in. But the black bodies it came from was not. It was blatant. Black cool is always better than white corny (especially when we are speaking of some Asian men). So back then, I was one of those people that had to call shit what it was. The anti-Black convos were happening, but unfortunately, we didn't have social media to connect with other people and hash it out publicly. Fast forward to now, folks are getting bent out of shape that there are some Black folks who aren't interested in fuckin with CRA, b/c for many, this is probably the first time that many are getting called out online loudly (and publicly) about the racist/problematic behavior in their communities. Many aren't used to hearing black folks say no to their bullshit. Especially those black folks who are demanding that other black folks support CRA because --solidarity! First of all, not everyone likes RomComs. Now, granted, I watched the movie and enjoyed it for what it was, fantasy, romance, happily ever after tropes, fancy clothes, and all the food. But I was very aware of the colorism, capitalist wet dreams, colonial servitude and exploitation, etc. But I wanted to see a fluffy romance with Michelle Yeoh. It is what it is, and oftentimes it's fucked up. Sorry for the long post. I really wanted other folks who get on here and say "That's not your lane to talk about Asian folks, you're not Asian!" to understand I grew up entrenched with the community. And guess what, I don't talk like them or mimic their culture, so....lol! Anyways, keep doing you. Shake them tables and kick out those chairs! Your viewpoint is valid in relation to all the hype about CRA and why Black folks don't have to see or support it. Also, s/o to the folks who are listing great Asian cinema. Lots of classics and great new releases.

The Farewell was a much more honest, authentic and beautiful representation of the Asian-American experience and specifically the Chinese-American experience, as was The Joy Luck Club. I didn't mind Crazy Rich Asians as a light-hearted rom-com but it felt incredibly designed-by-committee and glorifying wealth and capitalism as you mentioned in the video. It also copped a lot of criticism in Singapore for not accurately reflecting the diversity of Singapore's demographics. The film would have many Western viewers believe that Singapore is just made up of well-heeled, Chinese Singaporeans which is not the case at all. Singapore has people of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Tamil background to name a few and Crazy Rich Asians didn't represent this diversity in the slightest.

Its not just Crazy Rich Asians, that new netflix film, To All The Boys Ive Loved Before theyve been pushing too because the main character is an asian girl? But the book and the film make the whole family half white? and the asian mom is dead? and theyre raised by their white dad, and the main love interest is white? and the only black crush of the main character is gay and they put them on separate beds when they have the convo? but this is alledgedly positive representation? this is the most self hating colorist mess ive ever seen. They really need to get it together before they try to have people support these wack ass films because in 2018 we not doing this colorism classism shit no mo. Like I read an article by another east asian about the film and the amount of racist connotations in the film and book, like concepts of higher lineage and these asian authors self hating and wanting to reimagine their families as white, was soooo gross. BUT POSITIVE REPRESENTATION SUPPORT ALL THE COLOREDS!1!1!!! like no

I live in Asia and out of curiosity, I asked a group of other black women if they would see the movie. Not only do they want to see they also believe in supporting Asians; similar to an obligation. But nobody wants to talk about how Asians as a collective don't make it a priority to suuport us. I wonder where this mentality of "we must support non-blacks" came from and why were are continuing to perpetuate it.

there's plenty of good Asian cinema out there, like the Handmaiden(that's one of my favs too) and In the Mood for Love. If people care THAT much about Asian and Asian American representation they need to actually go out there and do the RESEARCH before they tell us to rally behind a imperialist colorist capitalist and racist film! Also I'm glad you touched on Chinese Imperialism in Africa and the Global South, it would be nice if African vloggers would address that instead of condescending towards Black Americans. Then again, I feel like too many of them are too upper class and shielded from poverty to even be considered with that shit, especially if it's benefitting their families and friends back home.

Seren, What are your thoughts on the lawsuit against Harvard University by Asian students, parents, and activists, who think Harvard has a bias against them in admissions? To me, it’s secretly code for “we think the blacks are taking our spots, and they receive special treatment in admissions because they’re black. they don’t deserve to be here when we have perfect GPAs/SAT scores. And we don’t think assume they do.” It’s now getting DOJ support and primarily organized by a pro-white organization. I believe it is directly related to this topic and the tension between Asian/non-black POCs and Black Americans.
@SenseiAishitemasu

@ascendantrocket
@ascendantrocket 6 лет назад
Sensei Aishitemasu It genuinely bothers me, especially as a black American Harvard student, and it reeks of anti-blackness. What about the white majority in the school including legacy students that are really taking your spot? Black students still make up the smallest percentage in the school! Much less than Asians. Why do people continue to question our right to exist in academic spaces? Why take away our few spots? Why do you assume we didn’t earn our spots and that we aren’t good students with great test scores? Why do you continue to center the case on us and not your white counterparts? The whole case is a reflection of how much people don’t think we deserve our seats at the table, even when we’ve earned them. Black Americans have earned every seat at the table! Not to mention the obvious racial and economic bias in standardized testing and schooling, and the centuries of institutionalized racism that put us at a disadvantage with access to education and have actively kept us out of these spaces. Race conscious admissions processes have their place, including to counteract the evil American history of racism, and now the Asians are coming for it and us. It’s all fucked!

I’m so sad about this. As a Southeast Asian (Filipino), it sucks that this is the only modern popular/mainstream movie we have with “Asian representation.” I’m tired of all the anti blackness in our communities. It just sucks because so many people are not willing to listen. I think lots of the anti blackness stems from us being colonized, of course 🙄. Spain, the United States, Japan, and China have taken over and brought over their white skin beauty standards and colorism. Filipinos bow down to white people. It’s so sad because most Filipinos don’t even know their history. They don’t know the atrocities whites have committed on us, so they still bow down. My people bow down to all whiteness and try so hard to assimilate into white culture. They do anything to acquire white traits, which includes inheriting racism, skin whitening, religion, etc. It’s just so fucked up how brainwashed we are. Imagine my disgust with my relatives; they’ve completely assimilated into whiteness so well, that they literally have the mind of your average bigoted white guy, and even after trying so hard and acquiring the traits to “fit in” with the whites, the whites STILL hate them. It’s a vicious cycle and it’s going to take soooo long to get to progress, especially because many Asian countries are still developing. It’s just so much. Now I kinda want to make a video LOL. God, how do I stop myself from hating white people?! I know us Asians are very at fault for the anti blackness in our communities, but as you know, all of this could all be traced down to white people. It’s too much. Sorry if anyone even read this. These are just my late night thoughts. Goodnight y’all.

I love and fully support the idea of representation of all types of ppl with that being said Not gonna lie, anytime I hear or read someone saying that it's our (blk ppls) responsibility to help support said movements it honestly makes my booty cheeks clench lol I get so annoyed first off let us individually choose if we want to be allies to your cause and 2nd where is all this energy when it's our issues and that is my main bone to pick with other groups who try and manipulate us into being these mules for their causes it would be different if we all were on code in that way but we aren't so it's a no for me.... I peeped it when Lena Waithe made that statement that us black folks should support tgis film because the overall fight for diversity and representation is more important and as a big picture thinker myself I agree with that notion to a degree. I shouldn't be made to feel like it's my obligation to fight the Asian representation fight... no other minorities and other groups were pressured to ally with BLM so don't do us like that...

Fair Play to you for making the video, it shows that subject is grating your soul. The movie is getting hyped here in Australia, there are big asian diasporas. A lot of S-E asians are looking at it sideways, coz Singapore is like the Qatar/Saudi Arabia of Asia, that place was/is build on the bodies of Indians,Indigenous Malay and Philipinos, full on Chinese supremacy. A lot of discussions are be having across the asian communities. I'm just problematically crushing on Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh and cracking my knuckles for awkwafina(her speaking in the trailer, convinced me to not even give it a try on bootleg) Great movies references. Some folks still gonna whinge and not look for content, expecting Hollyweird to give it to them. Luvvie is ghastly. Would you consider doing a commentary on Blackkklansman and /or Sorry to bother you? I'll venmo the cash for the tickets if needed be. I've already watched Lee's movies(don't get me started), Boot's will only be shown in indie cinemas in big cities so i might have to wait for a dvd. All the best.

Completely off topic but an article just came out that said all Detroit Public Schools are going to going to bottled water because the water in 16 out of 24 schools had high traces of both copper and lead. It’s like 34 schools out of 106 using bottled water. Meanwhile there is mold and literal mushrooms growing out of the floors of a lot of the schools. DPS has been a mess since I’ve been there. Another reason why I don’t like the term PoC being associated with black (anymore) is because non-black people are letting people who are white or majority white into spaces for PoC, and I don’t want to be a part of that if that’s the case. If black people address anti-blackness in NB communities of color, what makes them think black people want to be buddies with white Latinos and white Arabs?

I found a comment from last year that was true to form Gary Davis 1 year ago You know what this reminded of, that episode of the ****** (a show that I love) when they were discussing Samuel L Jackson's comments on black U.K. actors infiltrating Hollywood and getting more work than black American actors, specifically Daniel Kailua (hopefully that's the right spelling) in Get Out and how he thought a black American actor could have given something different to that role, maybe more authenticity. And I thought it was very disrespectful how a lot of ppl including the ******** (even some white ppl SHOCKER) wrote him off as bitter, and old and a hater, and divisive. John Boyega had something to say about it and so did Idris Elba just recently slammed him for it. I think just slapping the word "divisive" on something that is an issue for a certain group of ppl is extremely insensitive and ignorant. Everyone in this establishment has access to some sort of privilege. Whether its due to race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, class etc, for me as a black heterosexual skinny male, my privilege comes from my gender, sexuality and the fact that I'm in shape. As a dark brown skinned male, I've often felt inadequate and not handsome enough because I wasn't lighter skinned. My mom (who is also a dark brown skinned woman) was often told she was pretty for a dark skinned girl. So there's a lot of layers to these issues that no one is willing to their exercise their brains to understand. I think ppl feel that having privilege means you're a bad person which isn't true. It just means in certain areas of life, you benefit systematically, not just on an individual level. I know that it's not relevant to this topic, but I try to keep everything on the same page

In the last (I think?) episode, they address the asian/black contention...a little bit. It wasn't very thorough, but they said they're planning on working on season 2...so maybe they're going to address it more? They seem genuine? But I'm also hesitant to think it's going to amount to anything... ru-vid.com/group/PLSHabwxChOtX1HLAKXle8-w7FvQ5Xg8gD For reference: I mention this because it seems like people are sooorrrrt of trying to at least address the issue between asians and blacks knowing full well that it doesn't imply things will change.

Who was the blackface character? Was it the "best friend" character? Ok, I'm correct. Had a feeling based on the way she talked.

I am a Filipino and I agree that in my country, there are a lot of racist people here. Most of them are unknowingly racist. I think it is because this issue hasn’t been discussed on a full spectrum in schools or by the media. I can still hear ignorant kids and teens shout the N-word, wether it is in a song or just using the word to call their “dark-skinned” friends that aren’t even black! I can see teens mocking/acting “ghetto” to describe a black person. Just a few of us understands this issue at school. Whenever I encounter those dumb teens, I’d just wish for them to shut up and educate themselves. I don’t understand why the majority here still doesn’t get it. We literally are in our phones day & night, none of them at least would’ve done a research about this. I didn’t even learn about the history of the racism to black people at school, I only learned about it through the web! I’m just glad I am aware by this issue now, and being extra careful and mindful about it.

I’m pro life especially amongst black women but ian’ vote for trump. Another very good asian movie is Geisha that movie it bomb & addressed sooooo much shit. Colorism, sexism, sexual assault, war, imperialism, young girls who get sold for sex to old men, it also addressed how women will compete with other over a no good as man, it addressed the picking apart of the woman’s body. That is another bomb asian movie that don’t get enough credit.

I mean you said nothing but the truth. When I first saw it advertised I was like no thanks. Every one was hyping this crappy movie. I was like what. LOL! Then when they started to compare it to Black Panther I tuned out. Then when Asians and other Black folk said we should support I was like bitch please.

AALLLLLL of this! I saw Crazy Rich Asians as a last resort and not enthusiastically. I truly enjoyed the movie, though, only because I consciously ignored EVERYTHING that is WRONG with the movie. But of course this is exactly how internalized yt supremacist patriarchal heteronormative oppressorship violence gets perpetuated.

The commercial to the film didnt interest me, so I paid it. I do agree with you on that "hurry up and buy" mentality that alot of Asian business owners have. I often fell that way when Im at a local chinese food resturant.
