I read Mexican Gothic and loved it. Especially when she explained in her author’s note that she was influenced by The Yellow Wallpaper. It just made my appreciation for her writing soar. I plan on reading more from her in the near future.

Same! The only one I didn't care for so far is Velvet was the Night. Just finished God's of Jade and Shadow, it was so so so good

I love SMG. She has some of the best writing. I think even though she writes across various genres, all her books focus on her academic studies in eugenics and history. I just finished Daughter of Dr. Moreau and wow was that 5 stars. I do love that all her books teach me a lot about Mexico and it's colonial history. I agree, she does write complex women but I think she also writes complex men. I think Certain Dark Things is my favorite book from her.

I loved Velvet Was the Night (one of my favorite books of the year) for all the things you described as being consistent across the Moreno-Garcia oeuvre, and I'm so freaking excited to dive into her books because I have a feeling she will become a favorite author for me. She's one of those I kept buying books from (without having read her yet) because they all sounded super interesting, and I didn't even notice how many I'd gotten until it was too late 😆

I loved Mexican Gothic! I've only read one other book by her, Gods of Jade and Shadow, and maybe it's because I read it after Mexican Gothic so I had really high expectations, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I would. I still enjoyed it, but it didn't become a favorite like Mexican Gothic did. I'm still interested in reading more of her books. The sorceress one sounds good and I love the cover for it, definitely want to read that one.

I too discovered her with Mexican gothic and have read almost all of her books and I think you should pick up Beautiful ones as it’s my Top favorite out of all of her books. I read Jades and Shadow 2 months ago although it was good it’s not high on my list and it’s second to last in my opinion. Beautiful ones is not horror/ gothic like Mexican gothic but much like Mexican gothic she creates a detailed world that I can see vividly. Also It’s very dramatic kinda like a Mexican soap opera at times. I highly recommend. Also Certain Dark things is my second favorite on my my list.

I have read all of her books, and just like you my top 1 is beautiful ones. The description of the World is very detailed like the manor she detailed in Mexican gothic. I also like how it resembles a Mexican soap opera at times

loved this guide, and would like to see more like this. It doesn't always have to be authors too, it can be genres or subject matters! I have just added several of Silvia Moreno-Garcia books to my TBR. I never picked up Mexican Gothic, mainly because I don't read horror, but I am interested in reading her other works!

This was a great video! I feel like a lot of negative feed back I’ve seen from people have been prefaced with variations of “I went into this with “x” genre expectations and found that I was actually reading “y” genre. I ’m definitely thinking I’ll either start with Gods of Jade and Shadow or Mexican Gothic.

Mexican Gothic was so good and got me wanting to explore more into horror, especially more modern gothic horror and why I also picked up The Hacienda. I've also read God's of Jade and Shadow and enjoyed that and I just bought The Daughter of Doctor Moreau but haven't gotten to it yet. Certain Dark things is my current audible with less than an hour to finish. Soooooo all this to say... I think Silvia Moreno Garcia works for me lol.

YES I feel like SMG writes some of the best "unlikeable" characters out there, even the antagonists. I feel like there's a difference between "this character is so well-written and I hate them" and "I hate having to read this character." Like Valerie in The Beautiful Ones is awful, but I understand her and find her interesting and don't suddenly want to put the book down when I read her chapters. I never like noir so I knew when she could sell me on that she could sell me on pretty much anything! I love Silvia Moreno-Garcia's range of genres and ADORE that she tackles so many complex themes and ideas and characters within genre fiction, which I feel like is a common thing that is too often overlooked by some literary critics Loved this video! I finally read The Return of the Sorceress so I feel like I need to figure out my Official SMG Ranking 😁

I think her Novella Prime Meridian is a great example of the type of female characters she’s gona have in her stories or some. Forget her name but the female protagonist from Velvet was the night reminds me of the female protagonist in the Novella. In prime meridian the girl is very unpleasant but because her life is very difficult one can see why she’s like that same with the protagonist with velvet was the night

It is Belle Époque France inspired, though some character names are Mexican.
