Dame Judi Dench is one of my favorite British actresses. She is moving in everything that I have seen her in.

I love her, too! She's lost much her sight, so when she's quoting Shakespeare, it is all from memory. Just wonderful.

Hello Hannah, thank you so much for participating in mental health, May.. I enjoyed your analysis and insight on the books you read about grief. I also agree with you about second person. It often doesn’t work for me for the same reasons you stated. I’m looking forward to reading Judy Denches‘s book. She is one of my favorite actresses, although I haven’t seen her in a Shakespeare play. I am back from a very enjoyable and extremely active vacation. So I am enjoying sitting back and watching videos from Readers, I admire like you. Aloha my friend.

We Loved It All is one I plan on getting to at some point soon. Didn't know about the prayer emphasis in it. Other People's Words and Shakespeare The Man Who Pays the Rent are also books I'd be interested in getting to as well. Thanks for some good recs Hannah!

I think you might really enjoy We Loved It All--and also that you will have a lot to say about it. Prayer is not extensively discussed--just stuck out to me, but it might not to you. Thanks for stopping by!

Bakhtin - there’s a blast from the past I didn’t expect. Using heteroglossia to describe that sense of language echoing between people is interesting. Perhaps it’s also a way of thinking about the ways language and gesture travel through generations.

I'm sure literary critic scholars could explain exactly what is wrong with this kind of application, but I found her take on it absolutely fascinating!

Thank you for these thorough yet non-spoilery reviews, Hannah. I think I saw the Judi Dench book in my library's new acquisitions list and Ill be looking for it. I'm definitely up for something delightful.

The Dench is casual and fun--while still pretty nerdy. Seems like a perfect summer read while waiting for an outdoor performance of Shakespeare in the Park to start!

Thank you for this video. I started to listen to Grief is for People by Sloane Crosley . Was looking for something to deal with the grief of losing my brother to suicide. I had to take a break from it as I typically listen to audiobooks in the car. Not a good combo trying to drive and listen to an emotional book. As always I learn so much from your commentary on the books you read. Be well.

It waa lovely to hear you talk about recent reads for a change. I can imagine that use of the first person plural would raise my hackles so I am not tempted by the Millett. I suspect I would enjoy Dench's book and it would make a good present for Tilly.
@HannahsBooks

I can imagine Tilly might enjoy it! It is casual and chatty-very much not academic. More like having tea with an older woman who is looking back on her fascinating life.

Thanks for these reviews. I listened to Millet’s We Loved It All and didn’t notice her use of ‘we,’ but I did feel a nonspecific irritation that I blamed on Xe Sands’ narration. You sold me on Judi Dench’s Shakespeare; I’m now 20th in line for the audiobook at my library.
@HannahsBooks
@HannahsBooks 3 месяца назад
How interesting! I was recently trying to decide on a narrator for an audiobook and Xe Sands was one of the choices. I loved her voice, but for some reason I just could not connect with her reading style in the little sample. Hope you enjoy the Dench!
@lindysmagpiereads
@lindysmagpiereads 3 месяца назад
@@HannahsBooks I find Xe Sands has a cool, rather diffident delivery that works well with some texts and not with others.

I thought, Oh! I’ve had a book by Bakhtin on my shelf for decades, and this is the first thing that’s made him sound interesting to me. Oops, no. That was Bakunin on my shelf. So it’s another name to search out. But Judi Dench sounds delightful and even more compelling. 😂
@HannahsBooks

Just to warn you: my take on Bakhtin is so non-serious that you should take it with a grain of salt!

Like many other viewers who left comments, Judi Dench’s book is the one that interests me the most. I am also curious about Grief is for people. I have been very lucky in my life so far that I never had to deal with the death of someone very close to me, but it is only a question of time before I will have to grieve for someone (unless I die first, of course, but I prefer to ignore that possibility 😁).
@HannahsBooks

Grief is one of the things that happens to all of us at some point, that unites us, but it is also has the ability to make us more alone than ever. I hope you won’t have to face it for a long time. ♥️

Last year I read Lydia Millet’s novel Dinosaurs and was very impressed by it. It was the first book by her I read, and she addressed similar topics in it, our relationship with nature. I did not sense any religious undertone in it, but hearing this as an element in it this new book, puts me off. I’ll stick to her fiction 😬.
@HannahsBooks
@HannahsBooks 3 месяца назад
I've not read Dinosaurs and should really give it a try! The religious reference is fairly small--and I think she means it in a relatively metaphoric way. I might be overly sensitive to this issue...
