Hey all. I totally forgot to talk about audio books. I don't use them a ton, but I have in the past (I find them especially useful when traveling/walking). If you want to sign up for a free trial of Audible and get *two* free audio books, I'd appreciate if you use this link since I get a little kickback: amzn.to/2r4PgEN
Try reading Thinking fast and slow by Daniel Kahneman. I am attaching amazon link www.amazon.in/Thinking-Fast-Slow-Daniel-Kahneman-ebook/dp/B005MJFA2W?tag=googinhydr18418-21. this book is based on how over brain controls our action. Very nice book. Rest you can also try to read some world classics.
@@YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Makes complete sense, explain your point? There is a bunch of people (who aren't poor or live in a bad environment) who can't read still, so it makes perfect sense to me.
@@danjoredd So you think that a person who is dumb and has no ability to learn is no more disadvantaged than someone who has the ability to learn yet chooses not to. One of those people literally have the advantage of the ability to learn.

What you say about school is so true! I was exactly like you. Went from reading a ton of books to NO BOOKS at all. Thanks for telling about this! I'm doing it!!
we're all suffering from the same stuff , it's have been 7 months since you posted this comment , i really hope you re-started your reading adventure !
I recommend the App El Libro Total. The book that contains everything and everyone will be very beneficial to you, and remember that those who love reading have everything at their fingertips.
I haven’t done a book a week, but for the last two years, I’ve been reading almost every day. (Mainly because I’m reading longer books like Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, etc.) And this guy isn’t lying. It’s a slow progression, but after 6 months or so, I realized I had a completely different state of mind; more patience, more empathy, and even more self-awareness. Hell, my sleep schedule has improved significantly. The two best things about being a daily reader have been 1) my willingness to learn! I’m constantly trying to learn about new things; politics, psychology, the court system, economics, history; I’m desperate for knowledge now! And 2) my ability to have a conversation. I used to be a really awkward person. I sucked at holding a conversation or simply saying what’s on my mind. My relationships with my friends and family have improved because I’m much better at articulating my thoughts, as well as processing information and therefore understanding other people’s thoughts and words better. On top of all this, I’ve improved my imagination , my work ethic, my willingness to stick to eating healthy, exercising more, and even putting down the cigarettes I smoked like a chimney. (I’m still working on that last one though) It sounds like im trying to recruit you into a cult, right? But I’m literally just telling you to read books. It’s not necessarily about the information you’re reading, it’s the exercise you’re giving your brain.
Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad the end result was one with productivity attached onto it. Books indeed do have a distinct effect other mediums don't have. The absorption of the text is passive, yet the interpretation of the information is left completely to us the reader. That can have large effects which makes reading worthwhile.
yeah me too now im like you in the beginings , i just dont care about nothing , im secret type of guy who dont speks a lot , and when i speak i make sure to say it short ! so letss see after 3 or more month by reading books ! 😀
I am happy for you that reading has helped you in so many ways and that you went on this journey. I am just hitting 30 and started reading my first books. I read about 4 within 2 weeks. Got a membership in the city library. I wish I would have been shown the love for books early on during childhood but I am glad I discovered it now none the less. We will surely have lots of more fun journeys within pages in the future to come. While we enjoy, also reap the many positive side effects. It’s wonderful.
Also a tip: If it is tough in the beginning, choose books that truly interest you, make it fun. And then at some point reading just becomes a habit and you can pick books more out of your comfort zone.
(books that interest you and are fun also includes comics and graphic novels) Reading them doesn't make you reading something less. It's just easier and therefore a good started to be used in reading. The jump from that to fantasy books and then quantum physics is much smoother than doing cold turkey
And don’t be ashamed to start with a 180-page YA novel, or even a 60-page kids book. Work your way up like you would in a career. Almost every professional started out in fast food or retail.
If you read every day for 1 hour for one year in the field of study, you will be in the top 10%. If you read every day for 1 hour for three years in the field of study, you will be an expert. If you read every day for 1 hour for five years in the field of study, you will be a national expert. If you read every day for 1 hour for seven years in the field of study, you will be a world expert. Keep on READING!
If you want to be a world expert, it's not just about passively reading books. Try to quiz yourself on what you've read. It will help you remember important stuff.
@Karan K I'm a huge bookworm. I love reading and I love books. I love reading for the just act of reading itself, but I also love reading for the joy, fun and entertainment. I love words, I love languages, I love looking at the words on a paper and I love reading words and sentences but I am also very interested in the plot and the events in a book. The best part is that I can connect those two and enjoy both equally. When I am reading slowly, I want to savour every part of the book and I read a word after word so I can pay attention to every word and it's meaning. But when I am very entertained and when something very interesting happens in a book , I want to know what will happen next so I read fast and I read 3-6 words at a time. Sometimes I don't even read words, I just look at them and I know what I've read lol.
Awesome video dude. I actually missed the fact that many of an entire generation of people probably grew up reading books ONLY in school rather than pleasure.
Actually since the beginning of school some people never read a book after graduation or after they dropped out. Actually in school right now many students are not reading the assigned books, they use spark notes instead. (What a shame.) East of Eden was amazing and a Stanford student admitted he was supposed to read it in AP English in grade 12 but was too busy so he used spark notes. It is a FANTASTIC book.
Read one book in the Bible a month, better than all good books in the world combined. I'm reading Romans. It will change your life literally forever like noone can ever imagine. God loves you. Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 139
Quite the contrary, for me. I couldn't stand reading or focus on it in school. Once I graduated high school, I started collecting them and going to the library constantly.
Reading is not enough by itself. You should write a small essay with your own opinions about the books you read. Only that way you can get nutrition from that book.
I agree with you!! Seriously, it changed my life too. I read 7 books this month and i can feel that im slowly seeing the world differently, in more positive way. Books really have changed the way i think completely. Now im addicted to it, i cant wait to see how my life will be if i keep doing this for years.
Melli Wika read something that’s an old favorite or trashy romance or something. I got back into reading by rereading Harry Potter. Once you get through a book or two that you know you’ll enjoy, you’ll be able to separate school reading and for fun reading. Hope this helped
It took me almost 2 years to get back into reading after getting my BA. I would start reading a book, and be done after 20pgs. It took a long time, but go for a short favorite or just find something completely new, out of the blue, and see where it takes you.
i feel you, when you read for pleasure its way better, when u read because you need to study, it puts you off. here are some favourite books ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tZJ1UQ1nRoc.html
Very few read scientific and/or factual books for pleasure. Your statement makes no sense. Furthermore, this is not my own quote, but a quote by the famous Mark Twain, who certainly presented himself in a better way than you.
Receive a big greeting, El Libro Total App has hundreds of books to help you. Remember that reading a good book is an incessant dialogue, in which the book speaks and the soul answers. Download the application for free and have fun.
Tanki - Cubed Can you really guarantee that? I challenge you to take a page from his book (tehe) and be more precise, less hyperbolic with your expression.
Back in high school I used to read a novel every 2-3 days, or max a week if it's draggy or I'm too busy. But I slowly stopped when homework and college got into the way. I added this video into my "watch later" list for nearly 2 years. I'm going to start reading a book a week tomorrow and hopefully stick to it!
I’ve started using your studying methods and they’re changing my way of learning completely. I’ve never been more productive and I’m growing away from seeing studying as a chore. I can’t thank you enough for what your mindset and positivity has brought into my life. Ben
Tristan Fletcher John Fish will probably explain this way better than I will (check out his videos). I basically wake up in the morning and set myself concrete and achievable goals for the day which I write in a diary. As for the studying, I create a favorable atmosphere for learning (tea, clean desk, organized textbooks etc). Then, I use the Pomodoro technique which consists in working for 25 minutes and taking a break for 5 min. All these things may seem very trivial but they really do boost concentration and productivity during a work session.
same here..i got into programming in python because of you videos and today i had a meeting with my school board because I hacked the school's local server and didn't damage anythinng.. i just printed out the files i got and showed them they had a major security flaw! Thanks john Fish!
Nathan E, I swear to you! I used a notepad, shutdown -i, I also used runas command prompt, cmd taskmgr, and cmd cd.. cd.. tree to gain loads of info that I should not have acess to, all I did was raise my user account privaleges... and also, Im studying economics in brazil, my college's server had loads of flaws, running windows 7 and 8... I'm 22, you can ask me anything so that I can prove to you I am not lying :) Today was a big day for me :) I also play piano and I don't know how to read music sheets! Pics or didn't happen? Check out my channel, i got piano videos hahaha not sure ir that proves anything..
Half way through, 'How to win friends and influence people.' - I stopped as life got 'busy', but guess what life just got 'unbusy' after watching this. I'll be reading morning and night, bit by bit. A little a day, will go a long way. Thank you
Reading makes time slow down, or feel more full. In just a few hours you can have gone through an entire character's life. It's like you get to live so many lives in just your one.
Once you find certain book genres that interest you, reading isn’t a chore anymore. A lot of people say they don’t have time for reading but they don’t realize how much time they would have in their hands if they let go of their phones for a while or took a break from watching television.
My story about books had started the same way!!! I was a book worm until the end of elementary school and then reading a book started to become a chore because of school ㅠㅠ
The thing that always frustrated (and kinda still frustrates) me, is that I read really slow. So everytime I read, it feels like I'm running out of time if that makes sense
M.O.E this happens to me too. Just read the book and don’t care about anything else. Read it slowly and try to imagine the setting, the characters, etc
You could also try audiobooks. It could be you’re more able to absorb via a different medium. And that also has a set time of say 12 hours etc so you’ll feel like there’s a clear end and pace. You can also set speed at 1.5 etc. this will maybe give you a greater feeling of control
I was getting frustrated too, because I really used to read a lot, but it felt so tedious now. As it turns out, I now need glasses and never realised because my eyesight got worse so slowly and I still can compensate and read without but it is like running on loose sand versus on a paved road.
Well I do read Wattpad books, and there are many gems there! You should try reading “The Ropes that Bind Us”. It’s such an insightful book! You should also read Operation: Dard and Devotion, one of the most heart-wrenching among the books I’ve read. :)
I’m actually homeschooled and school never messed up my experience with books haha. I absolutely LOVE books. Getting new books or looking at libraries/book stores makes me sO giddy.
Crazy to think 3 years ago you were psyched about 30K and now you almost have a million! Just found your channel today cuz I was curious about Harvard! Very great content and personality!
I was kind of hoping there would be more fiction. Self help books bore the heck out of me nowadays since it's a lot of regurgitated stuff just written in different ways supported by anecdotes. I find fiction so much more engaging. It's like taking a bit of a break and going into another world.
Salute Lil homie. I was a troubled person last year. Every since Jan 1 I read every day ain't skipped a beat. Total life changer. Love books more than people
I think the most profound idea within your expression of your experience is that reading is equated with a reward, and similarly an obligation. Reading has been the most influential endeavor in my entire life, and I haven't really engaged with it in like 7 years. Your analysis and sharing of the struggles you went through have caused me to seriously reconsider what I think about reading books, and whether or not I actually am. Similarly, I question whether what I'm spending my time on from a day to day basis is really as worthy of investment as reading as much as I can. Thank you so much for this video. Thank you so much for your perspective, and sharing just that. Congratulations on 63k!!! Keep it up my man! Namaste
*Real, honest, cool, smart, hardworking, relates to me like crazy*.....just became one of my favorite youtubers!! Can't wait to see more content from you :)
I came from gang banging since 13, selling and dealing drugs til I was 23 and changed my life since I sobered up and began educating myself, put myself in others shoes instead of mine and man in grateful for that spark in my brain after reading .
i really like this, it's actually inspired me to start reading. i myself have an addiction to social media i want to beat, and i've always enjoyed the concept of learning from books, rather than staring at a phone. thanks for the motivation
agustdoodle I understand exactly what you mean. I decided to delete all social networking apps on my phone a few weeks ago and then I realized how many time I actually have and that I'd been stupidly wasting it. This experience of beating an addiction to social media is eye-opening😱
I’ve always considered the reward for reading is increased knowledge. This is the main reason I read non-fiction when I do read, it gives you a different viewpoint from your own and enriches and expands upon your understanding of certain concepts and ideas. Reading is really like exercise for your mind, some of my favourite books I have read multiple times to reinforce and refresh on the authors points.
You made a really good point about how reading feels like a chore rather than something you'd enjoy without a reward. I like how you connected that to the way the school system is set up. That was quite relatable and made me think differently about reading. Thank you!
I personally LOVE reading, and the other day I was asking myself why I haven't been reading as much as I used to. And my answer was...school. Just like you said. But not only because it makes reading feel like a chore, but because it takes up so much time and makes you read so much already that I don't have any time or energy left for reading on my own. But now it's summer, and I'm taking this opportunity to read more. Today I went to the library and picked up a novel that looked really interesting...and was in Spanish. I'm a huge language geek. I speak Mandarin Chinese almost fluently at 16 years old, and started learning it when I was 10. I started learning Spanish in October 2017, and am now able to read, listen, write, and speak pretty confidently. So your video was so inspiring, not only to get me reading again, but to be reading WHILE doing something else I love...exploring another language.
Good to start learning those foreign languages when younger ... your brain can't do that so well when older. Wanted to learn languages at those ages but wasn't able to do so due to lack of access to suitable speakers.
I am in no way trying to put you down, but I respect you so much for the way you act like you don’t have a lisp. Before I started my channel I was worried people would notice my lisp, and sometimes in my videos you see me repeat the word cause I’m embarrassed. Thank you 💛
He's basically a slick marketer who knows how to monetize his Ivy League experience into parallel Google Ads $$$ and Amazon referrer $$$ revenue streams.
The reason I don't set time aside for reading is because I view it like a chore thanks to the way the school system. I use to love reading huge novels in elementary school, but as soon as I entered middle school and had to read chapter books to answer the correct questions to my test, I wanted to spend my free time doing something that isn't school related.

As a person who has just started at university, John fish has given me so much guidance in terms of approaching a type of work ethic and the attitude that comes with it. The first 5 months have been a breeze thanks to you my man, love the videos.
I like it.. My work always exhausted me,and I haven’t read books for pleasure for a very long time . Last night I decided to pick a book on my shelves( I loved to purchase books), sit on the floor with my blanket in my room and started to read blocking my mind to think my pile of work. I really enjoyed it. I’m excited to continue reading that book tonight.:) It reminds me to enjoy the little things that makes me happy.:)
Recently I've felt the excitement of reading in a long time. I'm from South Korea, where all the students read books to 'achieve" something , not to learn other people's thoughts. They really consider reading as a chore like you said and I was one of them. I just made up an excuse that I don't have time to read. A few weeks ago I read an impactful book and I made the resolution to read books using my spare time. I'm 18 and people around me might say that I should study in that time but anyway your video just made me have confidence in my beliefs. Let's read 📚
Hey John, I even started reading the books and this changed my life tremendously. I appreciated your effort to do the great things in your life and use the resource wisely that has been provided to you. Most the people don't value things which is already with them. Thanks for Sharing. Take care ! Peace😄✌
I saw this video in 2021 and it was one of the key things that pushed me into reading more. I wasn't much of a reader growing up; my attention span wasn't great. For the books I did read, I felt like I didn't absorb them - I'd skim frequently, especially at the end. I would have a hard time finishing books and an even harder time remembering what I had read. Since watching this video, I've read more than 100 books (I've lost track of the exact count). I've gained a better appreciation for reading (and gotten better at digesting what I read), and I am pretty sure it's why I improved my score on the Critical Analysis/Reading section of an exam. It's also one of my favorite things to do now, and I've made some good friends by bonding over books. It's just crazy to see this video again after several years and think of how much of an impact it has made on me :)
A Series of Unfortunate Events was my favorite throughout elementary school. I stopped reading books as an extracurricular activity around 8th or 9th grade, which now I recognize as a mistake. Thank you man, for teaching me to love reading & chasing new horizons again.
Steven Lee I'm currently a freshman in uni. Reading helps build a better mindset and I also enjoy it just as something to do besides studying, or hanging out with my peers.
When I have time, so on vacation, I easily read a book per day. Not because I read fast, I'm a very slow reader, I just read the whole day 😅huge book lover
Books are a great foundation to success. I highly recommend if you don't know what to read, start by reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Think and Grow Rich, and How to Win Friends and Influence People. These books are the foundation of a good life in my opinion.
I would recommend both Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand if you have not read them already. The philosophy she describes may have it's flaws, but it is great way to cement your on ideas. They are also exceptionally entertaining. I also read Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark which was on the thumbnail. That is another one I highly recommend!
I stopped reading after 10th grade. Then, I got back into it junior year of college. It's so true, school essays and required reading sucks the entertainment out of reading. But, when you choose the books you want and sit down, you'll be able to form the habit again. The first book I read to get back in the habit was Becoming, by Michelle Obama. It took me 2 months to finish b/c I hadn't read 4 fun in a while. After that I finished books in 2-3 days. Trust me, get past the first book and you'll feel the joy again.
I’ve read a book a week for two years now and I completely feel like ive discovered little pieces of me each time I read a book. It’s so fun. It makes me feel like a kid again
Awesome advice. Thank you. Really happy to hear that your getting a lot of value from reading and I love the dedication you have shown by reading a book every week.
Altamirano Torres He said mostly self improvement books but story books could add value to your life if they are full of wisdom, allegories or based on a real life situation with applicable lessons or even just for entertainment, 😁 to relax.

Stumbled across your channel John and I’m enjoying it. I am what would be considered an ‘old guy’ to most of your subs but I like your insights from the point of view of a younger guy. I have people your age working for me and I will be recommending that they watch your back catalogue. I particularly like your time management plans, your acknowledgment that you were wasting hours a day on social media and your thoughts on reading for benefit rather than reward. All of these points are so relevant in this day and age. 👍🏼 great work John.
John Fish. I have been reading a book very more often and I have felt alot better and have seen alot of benifites to reading! Reading is changing me too! This is awesome! 👍👍👍
Slowly awaiting this guy to become a legend. These times are great because it isthe age where your comment can be read by john. In few weeks or months, it might become impossible :(
Thank you so much John I found your channel a few days ago and I really am changing the way how I see life because of you. Please keep making videos you will be the next big thing and you will slowly but surely save our generation like dead serious lmao
IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE FOCUSING READING NOVELS READ THIS!!! I used to be a big book worm when I was younger too. As I got older I had to go on depression and anxiety medications. From taking those medications I completly lost my focus and I couldn't read anything without my mind running. I would read the words on the paper almost one by one but I would be in pilot mode and not actually taking in the information I was just reading words. It became a huge issue for me because books were an escape for me. I found it so frustrating that I couldn't be absorbed into the stories anymore. Years later (and no reading) I came off the medication and man I wanted to read something. I tried sitting down with a couple old books Ive read before, I didn't have interest. And for new books I find I will get only half way through before putting it down and never picking it back up. It was frustrating me. I really wanted to read. I am a visual artist, I love hand drawn and digital art, colours and emotions. I thought how can I take the one thing that I've always loved more than anything (art) into reading? COMICS! GRAPHIC NOVELS! I tired it and it changed everything. Reading isn't always a 200 page story..it can come in so many ways. I started reading comics and I love it. I read them all in what feels like seconds and I find myself going online to read more when I run out of my own. Comics and graphic novels can help stimulate your love for reading. Since then I have been able to read those 200 page stories. Not to mention it's helped my art style a lot and has helped me cope and deal with stresses I still carry with me. Some of my favourite comics are WonderWoman (*new 52*), Saga and Skin and Earth
I used to read a lot when I was younger as well and then fell out of it until I got to high school when I could get extra credit in one of my classes by reading a book and taking a test on it that led me to read like 10 books but when I got out of high school I fell out of reading again. I'm definitely going to try reading a book a week at the beginning of next year :)
Dont wait until next year, do it this week! I started doing meditation every day and yoga in middle this oktober because if i wait until next year i know i'll procastinate even more. So yeah do it now
Galaxy Find some time each day, set a goal of a certain amount of pages. Then try and increase the amount of pages each day. If you want to read more then split reading throughout the day. :)
