Reading datastreams from GM OBD-1 with a Raspberry Pi

Taking the ALDL-IO and Raspberry Pi setup instructions from fbodytech.com and applying it to my V2500. What is unique about this is that the 16147060 ECM in this truck isn't that common due to the 4L80-E electronic overdrive transmission, only used in the last year of the square body R/V 2500 Suburbans.

Old video but still very helpful. I have an ODB1 GM and I want to get rid of my analog gauge cluster for something like this. I'd imagine there are even better scripts out there now 7 years later so this will be fantastic. Thank you sir.

I've been looking for the data breakdown from the serial line. I want to connect my arduino (since it doesn't require an OS and boots in about a second) to use for radiator fan control with a DC motor controller and peripheral monitoring, etc- whatever the ECM actually outputs. Just not sure where to find them. I guess I can start with the USB cable and just watch it in Putty to see what I get. Or delve into the Raspi program to see what the breakout is.

Just a fyi about what you said regarding suburban, k5s being the last year. 73-87 was square body years in 88 the gmt400 came about. But gm still produced r,v suburban and k5 which would be know as blazers and also ton pickups was produced until 1991 as square body. They had v3500, r3550 truck. The v represented 4x4 and R 2x4. So they still made ton truck, suburban, and k5(blazer)in square body style till 1991.

So, I have a 1976 gmc motorhome with an olds 455 running gm tbi from 90s era truck. The ecm is flashable from dynamic efi. They have a windows only based software and I’m looking to read data from the ecm with a pi. My end goal since it is a motorhome is to have a bit of lighting control (home automation) monitor solar, etc. and then display a digital dash similar to an airplanes glass cockpit. I was looking at node red to read rs232 to ttl serial data, but if you already have a software solution, I’d consider that as well. Any tips?

I want to do this in my vehicle. I have a 1991 chevy g20 van 4.3 v6. I just received my USB cable for red devil river and got a monitor already. Im finding it difficult to get the driver to work with my pi. If you have some time I could use some help.

I'm trying to set this up for my 94 GMC Sierra and I have one issue. The "make install" fails at cp: cannot stat 'aldl-tty': No such file or directory. I look and I see that the aldl-ftdi and the aldl-dummy files were created, but not the aldl-tty. Any ideas? Thanks!

That is really sweet. Will it tell you the error code if you CEL comes on? -dave

+Dave Hecker Hi - Yes, I have the nn definitions for codes listed, so when a code is thrown and the CEL/SES light comes on, the code number will be displayed. Recently I had confirmed this as I was throwing one of the EGR codes (32 specifically). 32 was displayed in the position were the "No Errors" was at.

I like that small monitor, where did you get it?
@gpaulwooden6576
@gpaulwooden6576 8 лет назад
+neolexington I got it on eBay. I believe I paid about $15 and that included shipping. Not the best quality screen - but gets the job done for sure.

How would I do this on a 91 s10. Would I need to write my own code to be able to read my ecm? Is it difficult?

Hi. I have recently posted all the files that I used here: www.thesecretdecoderring.com/aldl-io/ . I also have there the ALDL-IO version I used, as well as some notes too. However, I am not sure if the data streams will match 100% exactly from my ECM to the one that you are using. I am wondering if your ECM is the more commonly used 1227747.

+G Paul Wooden it most likely is do you know if it will still work

You have a 5.7L, VIN K (L05)? If so, I have the base definitions file for it - A058.DS. There are fewer definitions (as in the data-streams), so the numbering is different. So my v2500.conf file won't work on that alone. However the bigger difference is how the ECM is called. My ECM is a slave on a masterless ALDL. Meaning, I have to request the streams. When I look at the A058.DS file, it appears that there is no requesting?
