Reading the River and giving an explanation of my lines and moves on the Afon Tryweryn. How to read the water and then how to make the line work for the canoe. It includes the use of 'check and set' for getting into an eddy.

Great stuff Ray, it looked a lot of fun, now that summer is here I'm looking to get some water time just to practice what I have learned and be more proficient in my basic skills before stepping up to the next level, many thanks for taking the time to produce this material, Nige 👍👍👍

It is really polished fundamental/basic skills that allow the fluency with the paddle and the boat. Every day on the water is a practise day for me. Yep it was good fun day with two really good customers.

I hope some day that I can move a canoe through water with the ease that you do! Wonderful video. Love these reading the river ones especially. Nothing substitutes for practice but there's a lot to be said for watching / thinking through the process. I love how you use the current / water to move the boat instead of brute force....
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 года назад
Thank you so much for that Cindy. I think your comment on how I use the water to move the boat is the key. Once you understand that then the dance is possible. Mind there was one move I wanted to get that day that I missed, I have to drop the bow into a very small patch of water to pull a turn into a ferry to get a particular eddy. I missed that patch by a very small distance and the rest didn't flow. I will get it next time. It is the constant striving for that flow that makes us good.

yep it takes a while once you start practising on white water but in the end the dance is wonderful. Thanks for commenting and I do like you Algonquin video. Ray

Thanks Ray. It's good to watch and study the precision in your strokes, and the camera maintaining a horizontal view (instead of tipping with the boat) really helps with that. During the ferry glide on the 3rd drop it seems as if the canoe is moving under mind control.... are you using the Force? I have much to learn...
@RayGoodwinCanoe

Young jedi, you wise are. Growing in you, the force is. Strong, the force was when I did the ferry. In tune with the water always work.

Nice video, Ray - it appears the first eddy, there's no paddle input. Are you steering the boat into the eddy simply with knee pressure?
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 года назад
Absolutely. The eddy turn is set up by the speed and angle set before I cross the eddy line. Once in the eddy I only use the paddle to modify a turn (make it tighter or more open/wider). So I consider any stroke in the eddy as a modifier not normally something to create the turn. Sometimes I can get everything so right I don't need to use a paddle stroke to modify the turn. If you watch closely you will see the canoe appear to 'wobble' very slightly during the turn, that is me changing knee pressure and hence the lean of the canoe to subtly change the turn. But let's put this in perspective: I think the majority of times I go into that eddy I need a paddle stroke to tighten the turn. Hope that helps.

I am considering un-subscribing to your channel. Aside from the embarrassing (to me) elegance that you demonstrate, ... I am just tired of tearing up every time you show one of those gorgeous little rivers! (My wife says she's not moving, and I can't really feed myself!). Cheers!

@@RayGoodwinCanoe That is what I was mulling over before posting my response. She would likely claim half of my canoes, so... lose/lose! ;)

@@canoepoler 😆 I think that settles it. To lose canoes would be a terrible thing. 🥺I think you are stuck with her and staying put.
