I was also skeptical when I picked up this book, but I'm so glad I did. 100% agree with you on all fronts and am now anxiously awaiting for The Atlas Paradox. Also surprised you didn't talk more about THAT scene ;), but she was great at writing that too! The writing def has a fanfic feel to it, I believe that's due to her previously being a fanfic writer-- but it's great for the pacing!

Atlas Six was originally a self-published novel, and then it got traditionally published. As a self-published author, I'm a bit jelly lol. I just watched a video that (among other things), talked about how harmful lawn watering is to the environment. A green lawn looks pretty, but it can lead to chemical runoff and water waste.
@stellangios
@stellangios 2 года назад
It's also just plain wasteful, especially in dry areas. I've never understood it, honestly, it feels incredibly old fashioned to me to be focused on having a green lawn especially now that more environmentally friendly options are so available

I'm in MN and yes, I've been to the Spam museum a couple times. Last trip I bought a special Spam slicer and my son got a Spam hockey jersey. Weird, but we love it.

if you want to read more fantasy books with scientific elements I'd recommend the gilded wolves trilogy by roshani chokshi!! it's a multi-pov (older) YA fantasy with a 6 person ensemble, a magic system that's very scientific in nature (at least it feels like that to me) and there are a lot of academic elements as well bc one of our main characters is an engineer and another is a historian and they're always working together& using their knowledge to solve riddles or investigate stuff, and it's SO good!! tho the last book wasn't that great to me, i still loved the individual character arcs & their relationships w one another

Interesting to hear a perspective from someone who enjoyed it since I found it disappointing. But, I did read the original self-published version so maybe some of the issues I had were fixed when it was picked up by a traditional publisher. Maybe I should try it again.
@beccaferrell1334

That's what I'm wondering too. I read the self published version and I just can not understand how people can like it. It was my worst book of 2021. So it would be interesting to pick up the traditionally published version and see if it changes my opinion.

I loved the self-pub personally, and recently re-read the trad pub. I honestly couldn't spot the changes, so they're not big if any.

As soon as I saw the video, the words- oh my gawdd she read it! Tell me if it's good so that I will add it to my tbr- came out of my mouth 😭😂🤣 This book has intrigued me for a long time partly becoz of its synopsis and partly coz I really liked Olivie's other book- Alone with u in the ether. The mixed reviews tho were stopping me from adding it to my tbr

Your YA comment was interesting - I think a lot of the negative reviews are coming from people who think that university-adjacent books are automatically YA. Also people who, for whatever reason, didn’t expect the language/dialogue in this type of book to be flowery and pretentious - not an insult to people who just don’t like it, but more of a genuine question as to why they would expect anything else, you know?

I’m trying to decide if I should read this cause I love A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik so much and this is always the one ppl recommend for dark academia. However, I feel like I’ll just start comparing the two books if I read it.

Good to see other perspective. I was ready to love it and hated it, maybe that was the mistake. All the characters actually felt the same for me, in personality. I found the writting obnoxious and the pay off in the end was....zero. Also quite sadly, I was so interested knowing more about the society and the surrondings and got...nothing. I also don't comprehend how the characters spent a year together and have not developed relations between themselves. The magic was the more disappointing bit for me. 😮‍💨😓 I am interested on the second but very likely will not bother!

I'm super into dark academia. I know they're not for everyone, but here's some of my favs: - Bunny - Vita Nostra - Vicious - Gideon the Ninth (same vibes, but not technically a school) - A Deadly Education (very info dump heavy, but I love the worldbuilding and grumpy protag) Assassin/Spy: - Spy x Family (comedy, spies, and plot surrounds a school so it kinda counts! lol)

The first half was just alright. The second half… most my annotations were “ugh” and “we get it everyone wants to have sex with Parisa” Bonus: Reina, the best character for me, hardly anything. So upsetting. Also found your end thoughts interesting. I literally skipped the parts about Gideon because it seemed so unnecessary and I’m the end… basically was. You didn’t need to know all that just for like 3 sentences to tie it all in. So annoying. The whole Parisa thing was soo dragged on. Wanted to see more about their powers. About their lessons. About the society itself. But nothing. Just them trying to be so philosophical to themselves and for what

I'm a sucker for dark academia so I loved the theme of The Atlas Six. However I feel like book 1 didn't have much plot, just vibes. And the writing style has WAY too much purple prose. Every character speaks in such a pretentious manner. Like I get it, you guys are elites and clever, but you are simply twenty-something adults in a modern setting, not poets. You guys haven't even been in the society long enough to pick up half of Atlas's or Dalton's vocabulary. Shut up. I listen to this in an audiobook and whenever I see a chapter that's 40 minutes long, I roll my eyes knowing perfectly well it will only contain two scenes but dragged out too damn long because the characters speak in sonnets. The second book had slightly more plot. Slighty, from Libby's point of view. The rest continues vibing in the manor doing aesthetic research and playing mind games with each other, all the while using as many Words of the Day they saw from the Thesaurus as they could.
