It amazes me that this movie was ever made given the sheer mountain of material it draws from be it story's to movie / anime characters... and hell I am glad Spielberg had the power to make it
Exactly, the studio must have had to jump through quite a few hoops to license a lot of the pop culture references, if you write a book you can reference anything you want to but if you make a movie you face a quagmire of legality if you want to portray someone else's characters or creations on screen. This is why a lot of books are regarded as "un-filmable".
They changed quite a bit from the book Sorento's motives, the quest that the players do, Ogden morrow James holidays best friend is way less in the movie than he was in the book. It's not a bad movie it just doesn't really adapt that much from the book.
This is one of those rare cases where the book and the movie were both wonderful. They were, of course, very different, but still very good. I know a lot of people hated the sequel to the book, but I liked it; despite its flaws. It will be interesting to see if the sequel makes it to theaters.
@@jkhoover i know what you mean. RP2 was okay but nothing special. RP2 dor me was a bit too fast and didnt go into enough detail. The Arty and Percy thing was a bit forced and later to quick resolved. And i would have loved to hear more about the other Party on their quest (I dont remember their name). It was an okay book i think. RP1 was much better. (I hope my English wasn´t to bad ; ))
I think the second book was made with a movie in mind which kind of ruins it in a way whereas the first one obviously wasn't which is why they are so different. Don't get me wrong I liked RP2 but a lot felt forced and I honestly could have done without the hard on for Tolkien but thats just my personal opinion. The prince stuff as well for me. Didnt click with me like the original books subject matter did. It did a lot right but also quite a bit wrong as well. Also Parzival seemingly didn't learn a damn thing from the first book which is kind of undermines his character development going from 1 to 2.
First and foremost I love the book forever. No comparison. However, I loved the movie too. I had never in my life been so hyped for a movie. Watching it was like a cathartic experience for me in a time when I was not in the greatest place mentally and emotionally. Glad you liked the movie and the tie in with the sponsor was pretty funny too.
Lou: That was a great book. Ever read, Little Brother (by Corey Doctorow)? It's a little like this, but not immersive. It's a lot like Pokemon Go. Ender's Game is pretty awesome, too, though the movie was so-so
I'm afraid I hate this movie. I find this movie an insult to one of my favorite books, but if you can enjoy it I envy you because this is the only time I ever wanted a way to get my money back from the theater.
This book was amazing! I read it in 3 days, that's very quick for me, and it only took me that long because I had to work. I read it immediately after reading The Martian, and I remember thinking, "There's no way this book can be as good as The Martian was." It wasn't... It was far better!
I never read the book but as someone who grew up in the 80s and 90s I had the same reaction you did lol. I smiled for days. This was what we used to call a “feel good movie”.
The Iron Giant was not in the book. Instead it was the classic '66 Japanese 50 foot hero Ultraman. But the rights are so convoluted that they couldn't get permission to include him in the movie, so enter the Iron Giant instead.
I am so glad you got to catch this one, it felt like a return to Spielberg-style adventure and warmth. Sure, it's a lot different from the book (which I think is a good thing), but that's why it's a movie! The only thing I don't like is I can't get into this OASIS myself, I wanna get me a Megaman arm cannon and a Terror Mask from Splatterhouse and a Streets of Rage length of pipe and a Castlevania chain whip-- man, what would YOU want? I remember seeing this in theaters and people randomly going bananas from various references. The Zemeckis Cube bit made the whole audience like, inhale at once.. and my friend is a major Gundam head, and when the RX-78-2 leapt out of the Serenity, he went NUTS! good god, I love this movie, thank you for playing!
My favourite pop culture reference: When the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV show hits the breaks in the opening race scene, it's tires squeal in the rhythm of the Batman theme song.
Just gonna drop some key differences form the book: All the riddles were different Parzival was a student who cracked the first riddle while daydreaming in class I-Rok was a friend of Aech who was only in a few chapters. He found out Parzival cracked the first riddle and sold him out to IOI for a ton of money then was never heard from for the rest of the book Parzival and Art3mis did go dancing together and Parzival did reveal his real name, but they were there because it was Ogden Morrow's birthday and he invited them Daito was murdered by IOI Parzival was the one who was captured by IOI. This was intentional as he wanted to steal information, and he was using a false identity so they didn't know it was him There's a lot more, but I'll leave it at that
Why would you leave these spoilers? Why is everyone so determined to spoil everything? Why not just say, "Hey, the book is amazing, and is really different. I highly suggest reading it! You'll love it". But no, you have to, I guess, demonstrate that you read the book? I don't understand it!
@@IvanTeslenko They weren't spoilers for me. I read the book years ago. I'm just tired of people being determined to prove they know something you don't and spoiling books, movies, etc. There's no reason to leave a complete list of spoilers in my opinion, but maybe I'm just being too sensitive.
There are so many pop culture references in this movie, it's almost impossible to spot them all. Right around the time you mentioned them using Tracer and Overwatch characters, I saw Halo Spartans and grunts, Spawn, a gremlin, etc. Aech's shop had Lonestar's Winnebago from Spaceballs, a classic Battlestar Galactica Viper fighter, ED-209 from Robocop, a space pod from 2001: A Space Odyssey, and probably others. The gun that Parcival uses to shoot Artemis is a blaster from the classic Battlestar Galactica. In the background of the apartment at the end, there was a Klingon Batt'leth and Robby the Robot visible.
Genuinely fun, poignant, and surprisingly earnest movie. I love the touch of mystery over what the hell Anorak/Oasis!Halliday even was. I love the performances by Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg, especially Pegg when Wade tells him his insight into Halliday's biggest regret, just the right level of emotion
This is a fun movie so many references from Back to the future to Star Trek to Mortal Kombat to LOTR to Godzilla to Chucky just so many its ridiculous. Great reaction Vicky! 😊
I genuinely lol'd at the part when everyone is running over the hill at the final fight scene and you played that royalty free music instead of can Halen and when they're playing adventure and you super imposed the commercial on the tv 😂😂
The effects are amazing and all the pop culture references are pretty fun. You really need multiple viewings to catch them all. Also it seems Spielberg was living vicariously through his lead actor, as he looks exactly like him when he was younger. 😆
The final scene when Halliday says “Thank you for playing my game”, always hits me from hearing a line from someone you look up to and know everything about.
Nice reaction. You should read the book. I know everyone says that ‘the book is better’ whenever there is a film made based on a book but in this case it’s really true. They changed a lot but I understand why they did it as the book wouldn’t translate to a film that well
This movie is fun, i kinda wish it was a tv series so that: the hunt is longer, the characters more developed and more cult worlds get explored. Its a killer concept.
My guess would be that it'd be too expensive. Its a show that has all of these other movies, games, etc characters/concepts within it would be a lot of work.
If you loved the movie, you HAVE to read the book! It's totally different and way better! The movie is really good, but it's more or less a whole new story. They are both good but the book wins in the end because it have more of EVERYTHING you loved in this movie. It helps to have grown up in the 80:s I guess. 😉
I'm not a reader at all but I got this book in middle school and absolutely loved it. I always dreaded putting it down to go to the next class I'm an 01 kid, but it was still such a fun and amazing book
The book was fantastic but I was so dissapointed by the movie. A lot of it was filmed in my city Birmingham and people were tweeting that they saw a guy that looked like Steven Spielberg in Boots the Chemist, and they were indeed correct, it was him. Nice reaction though. xx
@Gerald H absolutely. As a stand alone movie I enjoyed it, but being of a certain age hehe, I was more absorbed with the book, and ironically it was a youngish guy in Waterstones book shop that recommended the book to me.... I'm now thinking he must've known the many references in the book would appeal to someone of my age haha.
The irony is the "Easter Egg" isn't really what it is called. Its just a quest. It has a clear objective and value. Plus... he talked about it, making it less of an Easter Egg. Also got to love Hollywood's "Ugly" girl Artemis. She's supposed to have a really messed up face and that's how Hollywood interpreted it.
right, it's this supposedly hideous birthmark that is so light in color it can only be seen in direct sunlight and only if the girl pulls her hair back. Other than this grotesque deformity she's one of the cutest girls you'll ever see.
@@TheMrPeteChannel right! The op also makes the point that Hollywood ugly isn't the same as real life ugly, in other words most actresses are beautiful so the most minor flaw is "ugly"
In real life, there is a saying that goes like this: "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away." I guess in the dystopian near future of this movie, it's more like: "When seconds count, the police are only hours or days away."
It's true what they say. Almost no movie/ series can ever live up to the book. Having read the book before, I couldn't even complete the movie. I found it that unwatchable
When they had that race, I had enough... Who made that movie, not only read the book but chose to do something that the book clearly stated that it shouldn't happen
The thing the China town before King Kong shows up if you probably don’t know this, is the Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park Edit: and if you have the time, I highly recommend you watching the Jurassic Park movies
not only recognise it.. know it by heart. You never know when you need to call the breath of the dragon. On the movie, loved it, because it not only touches on every pop culture icon I loved, including Merlin's spell, but i also found my way into the secret room on the Atari 2600 back in the day. It felt like this movie was speaking to me, but I have 2 gripes. 1. the Krull blade didn't get enough recognition 2. He misused the Holy hand Grenade. The Holy Book of Armaments CLEARLY states that one must count to 3 (they were quit clear on this point lol), so the grenade should not have worked and they should have lost the Oasis!
Seeing this film in theatres was one of the best decisions I ever made. Imax 3D, the whole nine yards. The ending hit my core and I walked away feeling so much love. Because that's what it is. It's a love letter. Not to just the creators of all these wonderful cultural icons, but to the fans who enjoyed and supported them as well. "Thanks for playing my game." That message should be at the end of every film and video game. Not because I think the consumer is entitled to gratitude, but because it is a clear sign of passion, pride, and appreciation. For everything that came before and that which is yet to come.
Love this movie! Just imagine all the references if you were 20 years older! This movie hits hard with us 40 yr Olds. And Iroc is TJ Miller, you know him from Deadpool among many other movies
It may be very dated but you absolutely need to watch The Last Starfighter from 1984. A must for any gamer and it's so earnest and charming. Disney's Tron is pretty good too, way ahead of it's time.
"How do people get _down?"_ Oh, who needs to get _down?_ Drone technology has advanced to the point where everything you need, you can have delivered, and VR technology has advanced to the point where you can visit friends and family and go into work without leaving your _home._
I never read the book. What pulled me in was the trailer I saw and I could hear a background music in the trailer...a familiar chime and later I realized rewatching it I was hearing the soft chimes of "Pure Imagination" from the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The comparison between Halliday and Willy Wonka was a genius mix. After that, I was hooked and wanted to see it. The parallels are spot on and sometimes I've even called it a sci-fi reinterpretation.
Based on the book of the same title and directed by Steven Spielberg starring Wade Watts in this film about a post apocalyptic world in which everyone is playing inside of a virtual reality world known as the Oasis. When it's creator James Holliday died. However before he did he left a series of keys. The first one of them will be awarded a bunch of money
I didn't like it at first but the more I rewatch it through reactors I have actually really begun to love it. I am a big fan of the book and so when they didn't follow a lot of things like the Lance fight and so many of the other turns or things like making Artemis's scar smaller etc I got really defensive. This is truly a charming and good movie like you said, the book is still different and really good!
I would've given anything to read the book first but I couldn't wait. One day maybe. I loved the soundtrack!! I enjoyed how much you got more and more invested in this movie!!
I think she made the reaction before she made the ad read but I think it’s absolutely how she said she new almost nothing about the movie and then make a bunch of references about the movie 🤣🤣🤣
Here is a movie you should watch 1. The Illusionist 2. Meet Joe Black 3. Avatar 4. Eagle Eye 5. Hacksaw Ridge 5. The Day the Earth Stood Still 6. Transformers 7. Braveheart 8. Alien 9. Tron 10. Law Abiding Citizen
Have to admit I was dubious to start with, but really enjoyed the film. I just love the references, especially at the end fight when he throws Chuckie at the 101 players....
It's the magic of Spielberg!! Whether directing or producing, he knows how to hit the right buttons :) I'm not an expert, but alot of the references were from Spielberg movies or ones connected to his production company. Crazy fun movie to watch and I was surprised I hadn't heard of it before I watched it too.
At the time Overwatch was fresh and popular. The book actually leaned more heavy into the late 70s to 80s stuff. Especially old video games like Joust and Pac-man.
I never got the scene where the guy pulls a gun in a vengeful crowd and they back off, that's not what happens what happens is three people jump you from behind if you do that.
Wow Vee, you have just jumped to the top of my list of actually cool reactors with your love for Gundam. I love the original Gundam and seeing your reaction to it has 100% guaranteed my loyalty to your channel. You are my people and forever cool in my book
What made this Movie so awesome was not just the visuals but that it was a Movie about finding Easter Egg's to claim the prize While also the Movie is filled with endless Easter Egg's within it self...with each time 1 watches the movie Easter egg's are found that was missed the last time you watched 😎👍 Happy Easter Egg Hunting VKunia
