Trump should've taken some pages from this man's book. Reagan wasn't a great president but he was very smooth and charismatic here. He gave off a very patriotic vibe that was easy to get behind. He at least tried to give off some sort of message in his speeches and came off presidential. Trump just rambles incoherently like a drunk uncle and likes to insult and play the blame game.
Which Candidate does Ronnie sound like he's talking about when he says "When we look at a problem, we see opportunity. But, when he looks at opportunity he sees a problem!" (2:10+). We sure need another Regan! I'm proud to say I voted for him in 1984 when I was 19!
I have 2 admit even though I'm a liberal Democrat, Reagan had a confidence & a reassurance & an appeal that cut party lines. He deservedly won in 1984 because simply put, he was a much more confident, optimistic & charismatic than Walter Mondale. I honestly believe that he became a better leader during his 2nd term when he softened his approach a bit. It helped end the Cold War & give him international respect. Unfortunately 4 the GOP, Reagan would b 2 liberal by 2day's standards 4 the party
Sorry FDR but Ronald Reagan was the greatest President of the 20th century, thanks to his winning the economic battle to set America on course for over a quarter century of continuous prosperity and winning the Cold War without a hot engagement with the Soviet Union.
In today's economy. The only reason we have high unemployment is because of our "lovely" GOP Congress blocking the jobs bill TWICE in four years. Without the help of Congress, Obama has still managed to create over FIVE MILLION new jobs.
Reagan both increased and cut taxes. In 1980, middle-income families with children paid 8.2% in income taxes and 9.5% in payroll taxes. By 1988 their income tax was down to 6.6%, but payroll tax was up to 11.8%, a combined increase in taxes. My dad also lost his small business in the mid 80's due to Reagan FAILED policies. Reagan pushed through Social Security tax increases of $165 billion over seven years.
Reagan pledged during his 1980 campaign for president to balance the federal budget, but never submitted a balanced budget in his eight years in office. In 1981, the deficit was $79 billion and, in 1986, at the peak of his deficit spending, it stood at $221 billion. The federal debt was $994 billion when he took office in 1981 and grew to $2.9 trillion when his second term ended in 1989. Reagan also added more trade barriers than any other president since Hoover in 1930.
Reagan believed that widespread freeloading plagued welfare and social programs. As Reagan slashed spending in his first term on programs such as food stamps and subsidized housing, the poverty rate climbed from 12% to 15% and unemployment rose from 7% to 11%. So much for helping working families who are struggling to get by.
Landslide 1984 - Only Lost One State - Walter Mondale's/Al Franken's Minnesota - by few thousand votes - Reagan didn't even campaign there to take pity on him. Wipeout!
He EXPLODED the debt x3 and he had the gaul to say "reduce our spending". If Jimmy Carter would've stayed, this country would be an amazing place today.
