I've been living with this projector for a few weeks now (it's called the VPL-VW290 here in the UK - I don't know why on earth they change the model numbers from territory to territory) and I love it, the image is very bold, the colours wonderful, and much of the time I think you could be mistaken for viewing a modern TV (which as we know, projector brightness and HDR can't compete with). I'm projecting at about 110" diagonal, which suits the brightness of the output very well.

How is the fan noise?? high in high lamp? or allright?
@MrXenod
@MrXenod 2 года назад
I have one now also, in a separate projection room behind glass. Had it inside the theatre in the beginning and I would not be able to stand the fan noise in high lamp mode without separate room. In low lamp it is ok. Note that the optical focus is dependent on the temperature, so I initially had some problem with the focus changing the longer the projector was used before I improved the cooling.
@GrimCellar
@GrimCellar 2 года назад
Obviously everyone has different tolerance levels but personally - and I use this in low setting - it's not too bad and must of the time I'm not really aware of it. It is more noticeable in high lamp setting as to be expected, but I don't need that extra wallop of brightness so I'm okay with low.

Some movies really have impressive HDR highlights, even with light output limitations. Sure, the same thing goes both ways, there are movies which look much better in SDR, especially on projector. For this Sony, if you want decent HDR experience, you should go no larger than 110 inch screen.

Sony vpl has to be paired with ub9000 for 4K HDR content, this will help to max out the nits at 350. Owning both the JVC NX7 and Sony VPL, my experience is Sony looks sharper and JVC does much better on contrast, black level and HDR. I typically use JVC for 4K HDR movie and Sony for gaming. For 3D, Sony offers a bit more depth, but it has cross talk issues for certain 3D movies, especially those ones with dark images. JVC, on the hand, usually can handle those dark 3D movies with no obvious image issues. For most of my 3D contents, I use Sony, but there are a few I will use JVC NX.

Family thought the same thing but I blocked it out with masking tape on the screen and they seemed to agree but “just” barely. Thinking their would be no compromises with an LG C2 or a Sony X95K which would compensate for the smaller screen size. Overall - a better quality picture than a “finicky projector” can produce. How do projectors compare to high end TVs on picture quality
@keepingupwiththejones2933
@keepingupwiththejones2933 2 года назад
Televison always beats projector on picture quality for most people. Bigger screen and more filmic image if the benefit of projector. For every day viewing televisions are amazing but for watching movies nothing beats a 140+ image IMHO.
@scottwallace1
@scottwallace1 2 года назад
To use a metaphor, TVs are a stamp. Projection screens are the envelope. It’s just a totally different scale and completely different experience. TVs are of course backlit and the light source, whereas with projection, you’re looking at reflected light, which is much easier on the eyes. And the larger the image, the easier it is since by definition, that larger screen occupies a larger field of view, so less light falloff for your eyes to adjust to. Your irises go bananas when watching a flat panel tv in a dark room. Picture quality wise, it depends on which projector and screen combo. But a great projector properly focused on a low gain white screen is in most important ways the ‘best’ picture. But some people respond more to the inherent pop of a direct light source like a flat panel tv. But that doesn’t make it better. However, a lot of a projection setup’s potential is room and light dependent. Flat panels aren’t as subject to the vagaries of an imperfect room.
@Maxime-ho9iv
@Maxime-ho9iv 2 года назад
They do not even compare. Projectors will give you a much bigger image, the limit is your home. But also the image is way way more immersive, it's like being in a movie theatre, it's hard to describe. You can't beat that with a TV, even the best modern offering.
@h4xor1701
@h4xor1701 2 года назад
I quote all just said, and also add even if you turn down the brightness of a flat TV right for a dark room, even if an OLED with best contrast and all, it will never give you that cinematic experience with projected direct light

Also those prices are in USA but in Europe the 715es is actually a bit cheaper compared to NX5. The 715 es is a bit sharper and has slightly better motion compared to NX7 but other than that, it has much lower native contrast, it doesn't have an IRIS as good as NX7, it doesn't match the black levels, it doesn't have the ability to use a filter for 100% DCI P3, it doesn't have the same light output and, most important it doesn't have the very good dynamic tone mapping og JVC which makes the HDR look so good.

@@Maxime-ho9iv Laser is getting cheaper and cheaper. Hell there are now TWO UST with DV that are laser and half the price of this unit. Theres another UST laser thats getting a DV update soon- 1500 lumens is dog shit- for $5500 it should be triple laser with DV and like 3k lumens. There are a lot of PJ on the market with triple laser and screens for this price or less and are absolutely amazing. Even Epson needs to step up their game- what they offer vs whats coming out and is available is pathetic. native 4k vs pixel shift is a lame argument-

@@everydayguy3737 It is the same story over and over again. You have projectors and projectors. You can find 4k projectors for 300 bucks if you look carefully. It doesn’t compare. When I bought my 1080p projector couple years ago, it was the same thing.
