Part 5: Autopilot and MCDU
In this tutorial series, we cover all the basic steps required to fly the default Airbus A320 from A to B in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Whilst the series is aimed at beginners and people new to the A320, it still aims to follow real-world Airbus procedures where possible.
In Part 5, we discuss some of the modes available to us in the MCDU as well as demonstrating the various autopilot modes available.
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

This is awesome and the best airbus tutorials. I have watched all the previous 4 episodes, looking forward to the next, and also to flying the Airbus from dark and cold start. You’ve gained a new follower.

Thank you very much! Really happy to hear your enjoying the series. I plan on updating it at some point, but it’s always a question of actually finding the time to do so haha (perhaps I’ll wait until the Fenix A320 releases). Thank you very much for becoming a subscriber - welcome aboard! : ) All the best!

Hello, I'm quite confused on how to use the qnh, could you tell me some things to do while having fun with aviation?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 6 месяцев назад
Hi Tr3shy, It’s hard to cover the whole topic in a single RU-vid post but, the QNH is is a pressure reference (essentially telling the aircraft what the outside air pressure is). You can find the correct QNH value, by tuning the ATIS in the sim, or using the sim’s METAR function. Below the transition altitude, you need to set the current QNH value (eg, 1008hpa) and above the transition altitude, you set the QNH to “standard” (1013hpa). That’s the basics but, obviously you can find a lot more info by reading around online etc : ) Im afraid I don’t quite understand the second part of your question? I hope that helps a little. All the best!

I'm an ex B767 simmer and as there isn't yet an equivalent model in fs20 ( xbox s ), I'm transitioning to the A320. Your series is an excellent route for me to learn the differences and I cannot recommend you enough! Thanks for your work on this,

Thanks very much for the kind words Stephen! Welcome to the Airbus haha! It's always really rewarding to know that someone is getting value out of this series, so I am really glad you've been finding it useful. I used to very much enjoy the Level D 767 back in the day, but it's been an age since I've flown a 767 in the sim now. I should really get back into it, it's a fun aircraft! Happy flying and all the best! : )

if i go into managed speed it just drops to 220 all the time despite the flight computer saying managed should be 285.

Just started testing out the A320 and these tutorials are great! Cleared up quite a few "Huh, how does this work" and "Why is the plane doing this" or "Why won't the plane do what I want it to" kinda confusions. I'm not at all used to Airbus fly-by-wire stuff and primarily I fly GA's and smaller turboprops, so A320 is a whole new terrain to explore. Also I see video 6 and 7 is marked as private (still in making?). Just finished this one and see it was uploaded yesterday so figure the descent and landing phases are coming up next? Thanks for the videos! Great work!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 года назад
Great, I’m glad they’re proving of use! : ) Unfortunately the A320 is still a bit buggy currently, so it occasionally doesn’t do things as it should etc. Makes it a bit tricky, as you might think you’re doing something wrong when you aren’t. Overall though, there’s enough there to start getting to grips with the Airbus. If you have any questions crop up, feel free to ask! Yeah exactly. Vids 6,7 and 8 have been uploaded but not released yet. I sometimes do that so that it’s a bit easier to manage the channel around work. They will cover the descent, approach + landing, and taxi-in + shutdown. Good luck with mastering the bus! The good thing about the Airbus is, once you can fly one, you can pretty much fly them all.

Please explain Pwr Lever positions. After either TOGA or Clmb setting do the levers remain in Clmb for the remainder of the flight, or are they reduced to idle for descent and approach? Thanks for your excellent and easy to follow videos for A320 new hires!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 года назад
Hi jress, I’m really glad you’ve been finding the series of use and welcome to the Airbus! ; ) Nice and straightforward on that one. The thrust levers stay in the climb detent until landing (when you hear the aircraft calling out “retard, retard”, it’s reminding you to close the thrust levers). In the flare, you can bring the thrust levers back to the idle detent and then on touchdown activate reverse thrust. You can really think of the thrust levers almost as “thrust limiters”; TOGA will give you maximum power, FLEX / MCT will give you maximum continuous power. CLB will allow the engines to operate anywhere between climb power and idle (with the auto-thrust engaged). If you want to operate the thrust manually, you can take the auto-thrust out and operate the thrust levers between the idle and CLB detents. I hope that helps! Happy flying : )

Been doing everything like you said so far but I just got high altitude altimeter wrongly configurated… What happened
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 4 месяца назад
Hello Bruno, What do you mean by “high altitude altimeter” and “wrongly configured”? Are you referring to switching from QNH to STD? “Pulling” the altimeter selection, sets STD (to be used in the cruise / above the transition altitude) and “pushing” will allow you to set the QNH (below transition level). You can also use the “B” key in the sim. If you’re on Xbox, the controls may be somewhat different but, I’m not familiar with them I’m afraid. I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

Does the exped button work? If so, what does it do?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Год назад
Hello Bryan, EXPED is short for “Expedite”. The button can be used to have the aircraft climb / descend at the best achievable vertical gradient. In a climb, once EXPED is pressed, the jet will target a slow speed (green dot) with climb thrust and in a descent, high speed (340kts) at idle thrust. It varies from pilot to pilot and airline to airline, but it’s not a button that gets used very much (if at all) in the real world. As to whether or not it works on the default MSFS A320, I’m afraid I have no idea - I’ve never tried it haha. I hope that helps? All the best! : )

Awesome video. Could you do one on how you would do a visual approach with A320?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 года назад
Thanks very much Sebastian! : ) It’s a great idea and perhaps I will do such a video at a later date. With the default A320 in its current state, I feel there wouldn’t be all that much I could usefully offer in a video though. The systems and the handling characteristics would need some work before I could effectively demonstrate one. Often, there isn’t a huge amount of difference between flying a visual approach and instrument approach actually. Usually you’ll be radar vectored or flying an instrument approach until you’re quite close to the runway anyway. For both, profile management is very important, and we’ll be covering that (as best we can in the default 320) in the next lesson : ) Thanks for your suggestion once again! As I say, I will consider it for a future vid, when either the default A320 or the FBW mod have matured a bit. I’ve added it to my list of future topics! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Ah OK fair enough. I've tried to manually land A320 not using instruments and am struggling with it, especially the last portion where I can't seem to be able to control the descent rate using the elevator whilst autothrottle is on. I am using the Flybywire mod for A320. Let's hope we get a better Airbus at some point.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 года назад
Yes, unfortunately the default 320 behaves very strangely at low speed / alt currently. I have all the same problems. I do have a couple of 320 landing challenges up on the channel, they might help you figure things out a bit. Currently I find the best remedies are flying a very shallow approach (so that the aircraft is already almost trimmed in the flare attitude) and take a bit of extra speed above Vapp (that helps with the wing drop issue). Unfortunately it’s almost impossible to fly like the real thing on a fully manual approach at the moment. As you say, hopefully things will be improved moving forward.

How do you zoom in on the buttons on Xbox? Any idea?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 10 месяцев назад
Hello Matt, I’m afraid I’m not sure on that one, not owning an Xbox myself. I have tried using the sim with an Xbox controller though and from memory, there are no zoom buttons assigned by default; I think you would have to go into the controls menu and assign some commands yourself. I hope that helps a little. All the best : )
