Is it real? Well, it's a real "arc" reactor that generates plasma, but as we explained in the beginning of the video, it's impossible to create a device that uses less power than it produces due to the Conservation of Energy, a fundamental law of physics: en.wikipedia.o... (summarised as energy in = energy out + losses.)
When we charge the phone, it's just using power from the main battery. Plugging it into the house - also just a skit. Sorry to get your hopes up! But one thing is for certain - it's the most realistic arc reactor ever made - at least compared to the CGI one in the movie.

I'm 73 and I wish I would have had the resources you do when I was your age. I love what you do with multiple disciplines. I used to do similar things when I was young, but I was your age back in the early 70's and there wasn't much available in the way of supportive creative tech back then. I did have the good fortune of working for Raychem R&D back in the early '80s and we invented and brought to market many useful items of new tech. We even got in on the creating and operation of the 1st commercially installed LAN. Heat Shrink Tubing was the Companies premier product but one of my projects was a thing called Hot Line, which is still available from other companies now. It's an inline diesel Fuel Heater. I must admit, it’s really cool for him not only to be creating awesome things and putting actual time and effort into it, but he also explains some of the sequences. The "arc reactor" is clearly inspired by the Tokamak. This is the leading design for fusion reactors which use magnetic confinement. Essentially, it uses magnets to squeeze the atoms in the spinning plasma close enough that the attraction of the strong nuclear force overpowers the electromagnetic repulsion, i.e. close enough to fuse.

Tokamaks are not within the ability of a hobbyist to build, but Fusor reactors are. They still carry out fusion, though not in a manner practical for power generation.

because its not real, well he made a thing but its not some special technology all he did was create a spark gap. Its essentially the same thing your spark plug does in your car and he could have figured out the power output long before he wired it based on the Amp hours from his batteries he used to power it.

It might aswell be the ZPM from Stargate, it draws a limited but huge amount of energy that subsequently has no other harmful effects (with the correct fictional elements in its base model).

However the arch reactor is based of a "real large fusion ractor" A Fusion reactor also gives the more power per reaction than with fission. Fusion is much more efficient!

The miniature arc reactor can't produce infinite power source, it's palladium chip still needs replacement (kind of charging?) And as said in the movie, the arc reactor made in cave can power something big (Ironman mark 1) just for a short time before it runs out of power. So, hoping there would be a real life Ironman in the future (except for the weapons)

Actually, the arc reactor is based on a fusion reactor. They are really awesome and can make "unlimited energy". Tony uses palladium which means he uses cold fusion which is impossible. Regular fusion like a tokamak, is possible.

The nice thing about the arc reactor is that it could really work. And it's not because of some "free energy hocus pocus", it is because of the way it's built which reminds me of a fusion reaction. To be more accurate, it reminds me of a tokamak reactor. Which in theory should work (and they are still working on it) Just give them another 30 years and it'll eventually happen

The arc reactor is constant, infinite energy. However, the palladium core would rot, causing the arc reactor to fail. He stated this in Iron Man 2. He also creates a real infinite one in said movie, with the "new element"
