@@EastCoastSailing_ Yes I certainly will! I won’t be at the marina much in March as there’s jobs to do at home but after Easter I’ll be busy getting my boat back in the water so I’m sure our paths will cross.

One big issue: Too much noise/music 🎶 😪 😫 🙉😳 I thought this channel was about sailing 🤔. That's why i clicked on it.
@EastCoastSailing_
@EastCoastSailing_ 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback, there are some sailing videos on the channel however I brough this boat at the end of September at the start of the off season. People typically get there boats lifted out and start doing maintenance over winter which is a big part of sailing. The thumbnail is clear on what the content will show however if you come back to the channel in May, there will be nothing but sailing videos. I'm only a few months in learning how to edit so I should have got much better by May. I’ll look to reduce the volume on the next video however filming outside is very challenging, I have to do voice overs to keep the Audio quality and cannot control background noise which the music masks. If I talked for 10 mins straight about costs and maintenance it could be a little bland to the majority of viewers. All the best Rob😁 Reply

When a guy at the boatyard told us that boat stood for Break Out Another Thousand, we genuinely thought he was joking. A spot of engine work later, that's a thousand; we blew our Genoa out at exactly the same place you did on our first ever trip out, that's over a thousand. That being said, every time we're fortunate enough to be out on the water all of that cost is forgotten, it's the value that counts 😊

Hi Will, boats are like cars. You can spend as little or as much as you want. I brought my last boat for £1500 and had that for 10 years and people were always fascinated when I arrived in Europe in such a small boat. When ever you by a boat assume everything needs replacing and don't take the owners word on anything. 🤣
@will7947
@will7947 Месяц назад
@EastCoastSailing_ thanks for the sage advice. I think I need to get through the competent crew course before fantasising about what vessel to get and what it'll cost 🤣. Reassuring to know, though, it can be done on more of a modest budget.
@EastCoastSailing_

@@will7947 Hi Will, Best advice is don't rush into any purchase, the seasons is over and any boat you buy now will cost you more in mooring fees over winter. Get to as many boat shows and brokerage days to see what layouts you like. All the things I thought I would like soon changed when I got on board the boats. Get something that needs a bit of work, something that you won't be overly precious of if you have a few hard landings as it will happen. You will find a few winter bargains but don't get anything later than march as it won't leave you with much time to sort all the jobs before next years season begins. You would be shocked at how much time and money I spent getting this boat ready. Boats are a labour of love, be prepared to spend some long days fixing things... having said that there's no better feeling than being on the sea and exploring places people just don't get to see. Good luck on your journey, you won't regret it.

@EastCoastSailing_ thanks so much for taking the time to respond with this advice, it's really very helpful and worth its weight in gold to a novice like me. I think I'm probably a way off actually getting a boat just yet and want to at least have some knowledge/competence before doing so. I took a motorbike trip down to Port Solent yesterday, just to see if I could garner any inspiration and have to say it's given me the impetus to get cracking with it. I think Chatham also run the course I'm after and it's closer to me from south east London, but something draws me down to Portsmouth! I think what draws me to sailing the most is the sheer amount there is to learn and enjoying the process. That's why so valuable having advice from people like yourself. Turning 40 in a couple of weeks so given me the kick up the backside to go towards it! Thanks again Will

Great video! Very well presented and informative. I'm not sure about the U.K. but here in the U.S., one of your larger annual cost is Property Tax, which is determined by the insured value of your boat and the local property tax rate of where the boat owner resides, not where the boat is kept. Also, if the insurance is not paid and kept valid, the insurance company notifies the government agency and the boat's registration is invalidated. All these cost are why I decided to just rent a boat as close to my destination as possible. All these headaches are someone else's, not mine. 😊
@EastCoastSailing_
@EastCoastSailing_ 7 месяцев назад
Thankyou, that's crazy having to pay property tax on top of everything else. Hopefully the mooring fees are less in the US compared to the UK. I tried to give up boating but salt runs through the veins 😆

This is very true. One saying I have heard many times is the best day of boat ownership is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. However when I sold my last boat, i had so much free time and money I didn't know what to do with myself and knew i couldn't give up sailing. Thanks for watching, all the best Rob

Wowza!! My elderly 27-footer cost £5k and my swing mooring (owned outright) was £800. Yearly insurance / club fees / mooring service come to around £300. So sailing can be cheap!
@EastCoastSailing_
@EastCoastSailing_ 6 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for watching. Of course you can make sailing cheaper but for us, rowing out wouldn't be practical as we have a little one. Also what ever swinging mooring you have, you will still need to get lifted out once a year which is no different cost wise and you will pay more not being a member paying per month when your boats on the hard. The mooring fees are pretty negligible if all your electronics get stolen off the boat as theres no security as well as other boats bumping into your boat or your boat breaking free from its mooring in a storm. It's all relative. Also we wound t be able to get on the boat rowing out as theres no water until 3 hours before and after high water so jobs would be really difficult timing it round tides. If I had a cheaper boat and more free time to be down there, swinging mooring would be good option. All I will say is boat ownership is not cheap regardless of how cheap a boat is. My last boat was £1400 but I spent 6k over 9 years on upgrades. If you cut corners on maintenance then you're going to increase your chances of breaking down or sinking. All the best Rob

Hi Kate, what would you like to know ? If you click on the about section my email is on there if you have a specific question. My advice with them is they make nice sails. I would personally upgrade the material and have a woven fabric to make it a bit stronger and they are terrible with deadlines so you need to keep nagging them or set an earlier deadline a few months before you need it. You want to be pressing the button now before the season kicks off or the sails won’t be ready til May…

@@RoyClare Hi Roy, based on my experiences, it’s much better to do the jobs now than take a chance wishing you did it on the water when you have a major issue. Im fastidious about maintenance and spares due to having a malfunction once coming into Burnham. Gear box blew out and had no wind in 35 degree heat. We were sailing going backwards against the tide. Didn’t have a spare engine and it wasn’t pleasant waiting for 4 hours to get a tow in which has lead me to be a bit over the top with spares and back ups. I shouldn’t have anything to do for a while. Given how high the cost is for the lift out and back in, it’s not worth taking a chance for the cost of parts in comparison to do the jobs. The leaking water pump is a prime example of having an issue that had the potential to end my once a year trip in summer. The more I read on forums of folding props losing blades and leaks, I feel better knowing it’s all done. Most importantly you cant put a price on safety or the distress of losing your pride and joy. Also there are too many tell tales of things not being maintained so I’ll sleep easy knowing I only have my self to blame 😉 look forward to meeting you. Tap on the boat on Saturday from 10am onwards if your about. Would love to see your boat also 👍 all the best Rob
