On a beautiful October Spring day in Pretoria (Tshwane), with Jacaranda trees in bloom, Prof Johan W. Joubert and Ruan Gräbe took the Road-Rail Vehicle (RRV) for a field test using the Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS). The SEMTECH DS+ PEMS unit from Sensors Inc is the first of its kind in (South) Africa.
The route, just over 60km, included a variety of urban, freeway and rural roads, and different road grades. The current setup allows us to measure environmental conditions, monitor the vehicle engine via the On-board Diagnostics (OBD-II) port, and measure CO, CO2, NO and NO2 in real-time while driving.
