A spring whiteout in Jackson, Wyoming led me to ask the question... if I just take out the Leica Q2M and my Leica M11 in black-and-white JPG, how different will the images be? Let's find out.

fantastic video and photos! I owned the Q2 and switched to the Q2M 4 months ago. There's something incredibly special about the Q2M. For me, its a totally new shooting experience and the files are so clean. The low light capabilities are unreal.

Very informative video. Especially when combined with the linked information. When the Leica M11 Monochrom was released, I briefly owned the M9 Monochrom, the M11, and the M11 Monochrom. Before selling the M9 Monochrom, I performed informal b&w rendering comparisons between the three bodies by taking a series of photos of a still life arrangement where I could control light and framing. My results conform with your testing and observations. The images created with the two monochrome sensors had identical tonal gradients, while the M11 converted image varied noticeably. I spent about 8 hours in LR with the M11 RAW image attempting to match the tonal gradients in the M9M and M11M RAW images without success. My conclusion was that the Leica Monochrom sensors create a "true" toned image, while the Leica M11 de-mosaic process creates a less "true", but appealingly toned image. For me, the M11 Monochrom is the right choice 95% of the time.

Hi, Just discovered your channel. I recently ordered a used Q2 Monochrom to fill my need for more b&w. This is going back to my roots as I started shooting b&w in grade school in the 60s. That said I’ve shot with color cameras most of my life (currently A1) and loved the color images I produced. But a funny thing has happened over the last few years as I find myself doing more and more conversions to b&w from images shot in color. I’ve experimented in setting my regular mirrorless camera up in monochrome including the evf and display and find my shooting changes. I’m now looking at the light much more than I do when shooting color. That’s why an all b&w camera is appealing as I will be living in a b&w world opening up things I might not see in a color environment. Keep up the good work!
@davidherring
@davidherring Месяц назад
That's awesome. You'll love it! I was chatting with someone in the Leica store about shooting monochrome just a few days ago, and he said "no one looks at a black and white photo and says 'man, I wish that was color.'" And he's so right!

@@davidherring I'll echo Bill's comment. I've used a digital Ricoh GR in various forms since its launch in 2005 as well as numerous SLRs and now mirrorless since then, and have found 90% of the images end up converted to B&W from the GRiii. Right now I have my GRiii and R6ii both set to a hard mono jpeg profile to enable the screen to show B&W and when I'm shooting its really become all about the light and form. I've even struggled to find colour camera profiles that deliver what I want in a lot of my recent images and am beginning to realise what want is monotone! I'm now just trying to resist the urge to buy a Q2M but I suspect I will fail and it will come. I've never been one to choose the obvious solutions! PS just discovered your channel and enjoying the vlogs from over here in the UK.

It was the indoor shot of you both, in the hotel (on the blog), that I instantly saw a difference. The amount of extra noise was quite obvious in the M11. As an M11 owner. Who prefers to use natural light. I am leaning towards using faster lenses for low light. To compensate for those 3+ stops.

Was an M11 owner for two years. I’ve since sold it and now have an M11M. I really love the shooting experience on the Monochrom. one thing i will say is it has me actively looking for light and shadows way more than I ever did shooting color digital…which is a good thing. - right now using the m6 for all my color work. I’ll see how long i can afford that work flow lol. Thanks for the nice videos.

This is something I’ve personally struggled with. I had a M10 and M10-M and when the M11 came out I decided to go color with B&W conversion when I wanted to. I found I missed the shooting experiences with a monochrom like using colored filters and the great low light performance. So I ended up getting a M11M in addition to my M11. Some of the rationale has to do with the experience. Love the barn shots from both of you.

Nice comparison Dave! Looking back at the one year I had with the Q2M I think shooting with real monochrome sensors is for your own experience. You might see the tonal gradient between monochrom and color sensor, but the people you share the image with might mostly not see any difference (specially sharing on social media) and that's ok, because the experience is for yourself. As you wrote on your webpage, I think the real game changer is the real low light performance of monochrome sensors. They basically can see in the dark by providing an extreme clear image. That fact I really miss, but I didn't used it every day to justify the cost of a monochrome Leica camera 😅

This is interesting because I love black & white and perhaps this would be an ideal camera for me but I love the black & white conversions I use from my Hasselblad X2D. I get clean images with great dynamic range in low light because I have IBIS at ISO 64 and the tonal range I get is silky smooth if that's what I'm going for. Or if I want I can get smooth grain with a little rough texture like in 4X5 photos. At the same time though the black & white Jpegs from my M11 are good enough for everyday family stuff and black & white edits from Lightroom are great all around.

The Tetons and Jackson are definitely on my bucket list. May happen this fall. This is something I have been contemplating lately, the switch from the Q2 to either the M246 or the M10 Monochrome. Over the last two years I have been shooting, primarily, b&w. I love the ability to shoot in color when I wish with the Q2. I'm curious if there is more leeway with the dng file with a monochrome sensor. I'm curious how you processed these images. Sounds like you shot jpg hc on the M11 and curious if the Q2 files were dng or jpg. I shoot raw plus jpg hc with the Q2 and I then convert in Lightroom from the raw file. I use the HC jpg as a reference while shooting. When all is said and done I love the results I'm getting. Hope you got some better weather while you were there. Thanks for this!

The M11 barn photos show the strong vignetting of the Summicron 28. on street and portraits this can be very helpful, but on your landscapes, I like the evenly lit Q2M more. In general, I am lacking the discipline shooting B&W JPG with my M11 - I very often fall back to the raw and process a color variant. So for me, a monochrome sensor is forcing me to compose the best possible B&W image. It is still not enough to justify the investment…
@davidherring

That’s exactly what I’m doing… forcing BW on myself so I do it. Otherwise I will always go to color. The Q2M is helping retrain my brain.

I was a bit confused in the video, whether you see any tonality difference between the two cameras, for high ISO definitely seems that the Q2 monochrome is a winner and maybe you have a bit more texture and clarity with the Q2 monochrome, Are you keeping the Q2 mono or happy with m11 conversion.
@davidherring
@davidherring Месяц назад
I'm keeping the Q2M for now. It isn't as much for the results, but I've enjoyed the monochrom process!
@jonathanhughes
@jonathanhughes Месяц назад
The low noise performance of the Monochrome at high ISOs is really incredible. The Q2 is a bit noisy at 6400 and is pretty unusable at 25,000. The Q2 monochrome is still clean at 50,000, and the noise that appears at 100,000 looks more like grain than digital noise. It's definitely a bit sharper, too. But I think the main appeal is the limitation of not being able to decide you want a color version later on, or adjust the various color channels to make the "perfect" black and white version. (although there's still a lot of leeway in the raw file in terms of adjusting the shadows and highlights). The other fun benefit of the M is the ability to use colored filters, but of course, that forces you to commit even more, and that's another level of limitation. My ideal camera would probably be a Q2M with a 35mm lens rather than the 28, but the camera really is inspiring to use because of its limitations.
@davidherring
@davidherring Месяц назад
It's honestly amazing. Up to 12500 with no issue whatsoever. Start noticing nose after that.I agree, it all looks more like grain than digital noise. Huge plus. I shot a lot of landscapes with filters (will share later) and that made the Q2M so fun. I did however feel limited by the 28mm. Probably going to get an M mono eventually.
@jonathanhughes
@jonathanhughes Месяц назад
@@davidherring The M mono is very tempting, but I do enjoy the ability to "cheat" and see the composition in black and white as I'm framing it up. I'm looking forward to seeing your filtered landscape photos. Right now, I've just got a red one, but I think it may be too much. I'll probably try orange next.

I couldn't tell the difference, however the compression of a youtube video probably doesn't do the Q2M justice. I'd love to see prints made from the 2 cameras which would be more of a fair comparison, particularly for the low light shots.
