It's bitter sweet, reliving BTS on American Hustle Life. Rise of Bangtan Chapter 5 does a great job of condensing the good, the bad, and the ugly of this controversial show into a bite sized reminder of this essential part of BTS history.

I never thought it was cringey at all. If people are/were "mostly" referring to Coolio, I knew he was going to act that way, as I've known him since he debuted in the mid 1980's. This is hiphop & being aggressive is part of that culture. I mean just look at BTS Cypher lyrics as one tiny example. Besides, half of AHL was scripted anyway. Sure, other parts might have been cringey but that was part of the fun. It's not all fun & games folks. Some ARMY only think of it that way AFTER THE FACT. And Coolio was the "bad cop" of the "good cop bad cop" act, basically a drill seargant type of character, to whip the boys into shape & "learn the ways of hiphop from the masters" which was the motto of AHL in the first place. People have to remember that practically all of K-Pop is rooted in US-American music. Had Seo Taiji never made a socio-cultural & musical impact in the early 1990's introducing Rock & Hiphop western music to South Korea, then K-Pop would have never been born & BTS would have never existed. That is not an exaggeration. Without Taiji, South Korea might still be performing traditional ancient Korean music, including Japanese trot & ballads. Sure, AHL was a reality show, but it was not a vacation either. Instead, it was a schooling environment, which made BTS better & grounded to the way they should know hiphop, making their music more authentic & genuine to this day.

I totally agree and ppl need to stop the unnecessary hate towards it, if it wasnt for AHL the boys wud have never appreciate the hip hop culture that they embraced..plus MNet had an agenda due the lack of clout the boys brought and it was revealed they made those crigney episodes on purpose, the white kid who hated on JK/Jimin admitted he was told to do so by the producers of the show for content. what MNet failed to realise that it made the boys stronger, took all that so called forced hate and grew them into the mega stars today....now look who wanna used them now for clout huh and ratings.,....when they wanted to bring them down...

To know more about what they really went through in depth, the hardships that ppl choose to overlook to keep their shallow view of our boys. How can you call yourself an ARMY without enduring the same things with them even through videos? I want everything that BTS wants to share with us. @@sirenakun The comment that I'm looking for, I see ppl saying oh no I'm not gonna watch AHL, I mean if you watched it you would see that BTS carried lessons that they learnt from the show and even though some things downright pissed me off, it can be later stated by members who were a part of the show tell you that they were told to do certain things.

Let's not miss the steps that they take, I've been on the journey since February 08 2013 and to any baby Armies out there, don't skip any part of the Bangtan journey. Plus it wasn't such a bad show, yeah there were parts that pissed me off, it wasn't a bar show and the boys took away lessons that they still use today. As always, I thought your commentary was smart, ethical, and thoughtful. When Nate and Tony brought them to Skid Row to give back to those less fortunate, they also showed the boys how to listen to and learn from what the folks there had to teach them. I loved Nico's comment that it was an equal exchange of energy. And we can see that these lessons, hard as they were, are still influencing the values and behavior of BTS, even now at the pinnacle of their success. Their humility and sincerity combined with their talent, hard work, and drive are what makes them so special.

You can only truly learn something when you're trust into it like metaphorically butt-naked/stripped naked. Like a "survival" game. In my experience, I learn languages better when I'm thrust into a situation that force me to think, speak, and listen to the language almost 24/7 instead of through textbooks or online.

Hi, I am back. Great reaction, ty. American Hustle life was important. I feel like they learned a lot of very valuable lessons being here. Yes, it was cringe but beneficial nonetheless. Iris by the way is the lady that inspired Sister Act! I love those movies. I plan to watch this show eventually too. Like Jin can beat box come on! That is so cool. JK got to come to USA twice once on his own. The agency really invested a lot in him and the others. They did as much as they could. Love this series. Hugs. Love u. -NY USA Army💟 First : that Iris woman who was giving them vocal lessons? Her life was the inspiration for the movie Sister Act! How cool is that? Jennifer Mann said on 2/18/22 They were in LA for 2 weeks filming American Hustle Life. They didn't show how the show actually began, with a kidnapping prank. All the boys were in a van and their manager went into a building to get something (he knew what was going to happen) and a bunch of men came into the van and drove BTS to a different building. Once inside they were eventually told it was all a prank. But poor J-Hope and Jungkook (who was just 16 at the time) were so scared they looked like they were on the verge of tears. After it was over Jungkook said he was worried he would never see his parents again and was worried he was going to be sold off. But imagine being in a foreign country not knowing how to speak English and something like that happening to you. Some of the members probably figured it was something related to the show, but you could tell they weren't aware what was going to happen. One of my favorite parts of American Hustle Life was seeing them on the streets of LA handing out flyers for their free concert. Trying to explain to complete strangers who they were. And then they had a mini concert at the Troubadour in LA. Who knew just over 7 years later they have 4 sold out shows at SoFi Stadium in LA. BTS story is just so inspirational, it makes you believe anything is possible.

Thank you guys for reacting to the series! I haven't seen it before and watching with you guys gives me a deeper appreciation for BTS and your genuine love for them. In this chapter, I loved seeing how authentic the boys are as artists and humans. They wear their emotions all over their faces and you can see the effect each person they encountered makes on them. They are so genuine and to this day, that has never changed which is why I'm ARMY for life! Can't wait for chapter 6 💜

I think for me, one of the reasons I wasn't a big fan of AHL was how the boys were treated and expected to do things without help about the cultural differences or anything. I didn't like Coolio at first, even though I was a fan of his music growing up, because of how hard he was on them, especially V, who really didn't understand who Coolio really was in the Rap scene. But a friend of mine pointed out that Coolio was one of the originals in Hip Hop and he doesn't like it when people take Hip Hop as a game, which I think he thought BTS, and particularly V, took it as a joke. Even though none of them meant any offence and were trying to be serious. Honestly, I think to create the drama of it all, I think the show deliberately didn't tell Coolio about BTS being made of two underground rappers and an underground dancer and that the rest were vocalist, and also that most of them can't speak English. Which is harsh. That said, he could've tried to understand that as they didn't grow up in the US and Hip Hop history is mostly unknown to them, so of course they won't get it, plus, 6 of the 7 members were still consider kids back then. I prefer how Iris treated them, firm, hard, but also calm and understanding and encouraging. But that's me.

The good thing about AHL, the boys did learn a lot and I think that experience is what helped keep them humble about their own origins too; and to also help them remember that music has different roots in different countries.

Honestly, I was able to take Coolio being a hard@ss on the guys way more than I could tolerate -dante- that mentor who disappeared being a straight jack@ss to them. At least Coolio actually gave them valuable advice and acknowledged them and their music in the end (and he was nicer in the unofficial mnet clips, so it might've been an act on his part too since another guest revealed he was told to act a certain way to them by the staff). But the other guy has no excuse. Not even the other mentors knew what his deal was when they were asked abt it (I know Tony was asked abt it on the FO Squad channel and I think I remember Nate responded in a twt abt it).

Now I know why these boys are successful. Thanks for these videos. I've not seen them. I became a BTS ARMY like 3years ago, I didn't know they went through so much tribulations and hateful discouragement in their life. They deserve all the success and prosperity they are having in life. They deserve it and I will continue to support them. I'm glad and proud I'm a BTS army.

I don't understand why people didn't like AHL. It was a reality show which most of it was scripted. Coolio and they were showing BTS the REAL about hip-hop life. Am sure it was a great learning experience for them. People show so much hate to Coolio and the young guy who was 'bossing' Jimin and JK around. The young guy had to come out and say he was going by a script. Another thing, obviously they would have told all who were involved in AHL that the guys were from Korea and don't speak English, well except for RM. But because of the fans love for BTS they were highly offended. People need to take it for what it was and move on. I don't think Bang Si-Hyuk would've just throw BTS to the wolves, and am sure they had their team with them.

So many things to say! Nico, your hat is wonderful - can you tell me where you got it? I have no idea who Coolio is, but AJJ is right - his hair does look like twigs. I used to listen to hip hop a long time ago (think about Curtis Blow, Grand Master Flash, Whodini, Fat Boys, Easy E, Sugar Hill Gang, etc.) so it was fun hearing some OG songs in the background. About their visit to Skid Row, I was homeless for 2 years, and I agree those guys gave BTS some good advice. You never know what you might bring to someone who needs it, and how important that thing could be. This Rise of Bangtan series was just recommended to me, so as usual, your timing is perfect. Thanks for bringing this to us! Sorry this is longer than usual but I just had to say these things!

I adore American Hustle Life, it’s were their true appreciation for Black People and Black women started also, they were stopping for them, and willing to help them. When no other Nationalities of women would. I have to say our women, have a tendency of being kind like that. And these were very beautiful women, nothing to sneeze at, I’m proud to say. Makes me proud of my Sisters. The guys were able to learn so much, on this trip to America. Way to go BTS.

One thing I never understood was why Jimin being a lead vocalist didn't receive the voice lesson🙄! I loved AHL, because it was all about the boys learning how to persevere through good and hard times! A lot of people didn't like Coolio, but dude taught them some gems about presentation that was priceless. AHL was the beginning of Bangtans come up for sure here in the US and their love for hip hop was truly met with open arms from some of the pioneers of hip hop! I like how Black artist were the ones they sought out to help them legitimately grow as a group.

No I'm sorry I just can't get over how Coolio treated them initially, especially Tae. Like seriously who clowns someone who can't even understand the language they're speaking? Anyways I'll leave it at that cause I respect u guys but what I WILL say is that I am just so proud of them for holding their own and really rising to the occasion 🙏 Especially since there were some moments that honestly would've made most people quit, they handled it with grace and humility like always 💜 That's why I actually enjoyed this show, proud army moment 👏👏

lemme just get this out there...Coolio was an A$$ and I'm not sure the guys learned anything from him and YES I wanted to snatch those twigs right off his head BUT after the first 2 episodes I truly loved the show. Everyone was genuine and really rooted for the guys and the guys seemed to benefit greatly. I really loved seeing RM and Jimin together, something about their chemistry. The guys are so hardworking, talented and humble and I'm so proud of them💜

Before I even watch the video, I was reading the comments and I think I'm the same as many others. I didn't mind AHL, I don't agree with how the boys were treated however I do think what they learnt was a pivotal turning point in their careers. Before AHL we saw a very hip hop/rap heavy BTS, there's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think it was their overall "style" so after AHL and D&W there was a slight switch. They took what they learnt from this program and album, all the pros and cons and then came forward and produced the iconic HYYH era, which is a masterpiece on its own, when you think about their ages at the time and where they were in life, not just as a band but as individuals, it's insane. It was a turning point in their journey, if it didn't happen, I do believe their timeline would have been a little different. But that's just my opinion though anyways, onto the video 😂

Let’s be honest here. American rappers are so much more “rougher” than Korean Artist. Koreans are always so polite and and typically American rappers come across “like they have to prove something, t be/act tough and have attitude”. PD should have prepared BTS better than he did and we all know Coolio was not very nice to BTS in the beginning. When V had to do those push ups, you could tell BTS was not happy about it. Yes, they learned so much and I am sure they are still thankful today, but I am also sure they learned how not to be treat other Artist.

I really appreciate that this video focused more on the positive stuff from the experience. There's a lot of controversy to AHL and a lot of things that a lot of people don't like. But it's been awhile since i watched it once when i started coming into BTS, so i only rmbr that people don't like it. I don't really think others' opinions about it should matter in my overall thoughts (i only rmbr when i watched the first episode and they thought that they were kidnapped, that I felt like if i were there with them, i might have actually tried to escape and protect them HAHAHA), but this video takes me back and reminds me the good things and that, is good.

I never thought AHL was cringey at all.

I honestly don't think BTS would be the artists they are today if they didn't do American Hustle Life. It was so important for them to be in the States with Black folks and learn that hip hop is not a costume, it's a culture and it deserves respect. It was definitely a cringey show but I think the experience impacted them a lot.

Okay my opinion has always been this BTS hustle Life was a little bit cringy but all in all they learned a lot they learned how to dance better they learn beatboxing you know they got to get into different hairs learn how to speak English you know having dance battles definitely gin cooking a lot the walking a lot and using less transportation having Warren g and Coolio as a mentor the fact that the arm has a song with Warren G called P.D.D (please don't die) which is please don't die that's cool you know like they actually learned a lot as crunches it was they learned a lot of shout out to Ms. Iris the vocal teacher I think she's still teaching she was pretty nice and she was one of the first people that believed in Tae and said they had a soulful voice I think that if it was not for him meeting her we might have gotten see you Singularity or any of the other songs he made so I'm really grateful for her cuz like There were controversial things that happens in hustle life but besides that they learned a lot and we got some iconic moments it's wasn't too bad. This definitely kept them humble and I'm glad that they got to have this experience because not many do . R.I.P Jewel she was nice and a girl that bts talked to when they were filming the MV

I just finished AHL. I had put it off since there was some controversary around it. There was some difficult parts to watch, but overall I really enjoyed it. This was so early in their career and was really a cornerstone to their success. They were like sponges at this stage and they soaked it all in! They stay humble and teachable; that's a big part of their overall success. I loved AHL (and Rise of Bangtan).

This is super old school, but there is merit in “paying your dues” in american culture. I don’t think a lot of hip hop heads would take BTS seriously if they didn’t go through the hardships of AHL. “You have a right to be where you are because you went through this”
