I renewed my CA driver's license but it's not the Real ID due to not bringing my Marriage license. I had brought all the other documents they wanted. But she said to come back with the Marriage license and they will give me the Real ID. I had been married since 1979, had changed my name way back then. Had the same name all these years. WTH? Also, because I didn't have my documents out of the envelope, she put me aside and helped about 5 people behind me while stood there holding my docs. Brutal.

Getting a Compliant DL isn't mandatory unless you want or need to fly. Or if your employment requires it. But you MUST get the new, Compliant DL by Oct. 1st, 2020 if you want to fly. My DL also expires in 2021, but I want to fly so I am getting the Compliant DL next summer. Keep in mind they also have to do all the background checks on the Complaint DL so you won't get it right away. Maybe in 2 weeks or so after you apply.

So I've been hurling curses pretty much ever since but your point was the first thing I thought of. So I get the notification that I am to serve on a jury but I don't have that "Real ID". Are they going to let me in the building? And then "assuming" that they would, of course, because, "oh, well that's different" and "well, we didn't mean it to apply for that," etc., I'm gonna be the crotchety old bastard who simply turns around and walks out because "according to the law, I ain't allowed in this building." I'm glad I'm old and don't have that much time to be stuck in this hell on earth.

As my schedule didn’t permit me to visit the DMV during the work week, I chose this location as they are one of the few office locations that they have open on Saturdays.
