For the tourist groups, they are mainly old people travelling. They like to travel with friends in tourist groups with a guide to lead them around rather than research online and make their own plans.
Wow, Joel. We just came back from Guizhou ourselves, which is pretty close to Zhangjiajie. As someone who wants to get into sharing my travels myself it's really inspiring to see you guys' travels in China. It's really impressive that you've managed to get this much done dispite not speaking the language. Respect!
Zhangjiajie is so cool, and yet I have not been there as a Chinese😢. You can also go to Huangshan (The Yellow Mountain) in southern Anhui province, where the mountains and hills are cool and exotic in a different sense!! While the ancient villages beneath Huangshan are also very pretty and distinct from the rest of rural China.
Definitely stay up on one of the hotels in Huangshan for a few nights, just for better chances to see the namesake sea of clouds near Baiyun Hotel, especially if you are able to be there at dawn when no one's there yet or dusk after the gondola closes and only hotel customers are left. The colors on those cloud seas are absolutely stunning. Easily my favourite spot up on Huangshan. Also stay up later for incredible views of the Milky Way too for astrophotographers.

I just got back from China and had the opportunity to visit Zhangjiajie. It was unbelievable. If you go during peak season in summer be prepared for long queues

Wow, the Avatar Mountain View is so beautiful. Well worth it. People go with tour group for relaxation, you no longer need to figure out everything on your way. But of cause you could miss some fun of visiting places of your special interest.

this was a much nicer place to visit in the very early 2000s. it has become too touristy nowadays. I have stayed overnight here well over 100 times in the past
for those who can read Chinese and can't find the YOLO hotel, it's called 云上茶园, which you'll be able to find on the Chinese "B" map, in an area called 袁家界茶场. (hope Google doesn't censor this comment as they regularly do my other ones that mention any Chinese website).
Emilia did not know the difference between a toad and a frog. Me neither so I looked it up: Frogs have smooth, somewhat slimy skin. Toads have dry, warty skin. Frogs have long legs, built for jumping. Toads have shorter legs and prefer to get around by crawling. ;)
