You should make a video on classic vs gamine since both have a mixture of yin and yang.

I cant figure out what I am either 😂 I look taller than I am because I have long legs. My arms are long too though. I am 5'5 and most I've weighed is about 110. Idk if weight matters though? I would guess myself closest to a Jennifer Aniston (body type, not beauty hehe) but I do have fleshy round cheeks, bigger nose and forehead..I can tell with others what looks good especially hair color cut and makeup but it's like i cant see myself truly lol drives me crazy!

Gamines are petite 5'5 and under. and then it later changes to gamines can be taller. .. ? which Is it? 😅

Here's what I've found. I started watching videos of what different types should wear. It was blatantly obvious I'm soft natural when I did that. I don't know about anybody else, but I know when I've looked good and like every time I've looked good in my life, is when i had a variation of those clothes. It was almost comical actually. I think people try to fit a type 100%. I think that very rarely happens. I mean, I'm about 5'2". So that's a little shorter than a soft natural, typically. But everything else fits. Like the fact that I have the shoulders of a line backer. So try that. Just find lots of videos on the types you're going between.

I'm so grateful for this. Most of my life, I've regarded myself as "unconventionally attractive" at best and rather odd-looking at worst, and any time I tried to pull off "sexy" or "professional" I'd end up looking like a gawky teenaged girl. Now I know why--I'm a Flamboyant Gamine! It's not bad, it's not weird or unattractive, it's just a subtype and I'm not alone!
@unneighborlyarcades6356
@unneighborlyarcades6356 5 лет назад
I'm commenting a lot in this section because I'm so happy to be amongst my kind. So many similar experiences! (Ha ha) I often refer to myself as "funny looking" and have felt that to be a great privilege. I love comedy (plays, rather than stand-up), and I feel my FG look helps an audience perceive me in that manner easier than, say, a romantic or a classic. The samba is quite a sexy dance, yes? Not when I do it. It's instantly hilarious and, for that, I'm thankful. I'm somehow petite and lanky all at once (perhaps what you call “gawky teenaged girl”), so my movements can be very funny. My skeleton allows for some rather…interesting movements. I love to exaggerate this with long, boxy lines. In day-to-day life, I look like an underfed child and avoid such clothes, but if my goal is to make someone laugh it works well because the “pointedness” and “narrowness” of my movements are somehow exaggerated. And, of course, with a gamine face what else can we do but show rather exaggerated facial expressions? The eclectic nature of our faces and body are interesting to look at and, therefore, lend itself well to the genre. I find, even amongst different-looking comedic actors, that expressiveness is a shared trait. Carol Burnett is a natural, but she has an expressive face and a rather gawky body. I think a lot about this sort of thing-especially about the physical nature of women in physical comedy and how gender expectations probably play a role in that-so I apologize if I’m boring you with things you never asked about. My point is: Harness the FG-ness in whatever way you see fit and realize that our physicality allows us some privileges that are not available to more voluptuous body-types, just as they have some privileges not allotted us. How cool is that? I realize not everyone relishes in the idea of being laughed at, however. For professional clothes, I find blazers and shirts that end at my shoulders are very important-right where that bony protrusion is-in avoiding a “where is you mommy, little girl?” look. ¾ sleeves on a blazer are helpful because normal sleeves on those jackets seem to be quite long and big. Straight-legged and narrow trousers that end at the ankle or are cropped just above are great as well. Boy’s suit-pants fit very well for me, so I recommend giving those a try if you haven’t. With sexiness, regardless of type, I think the most important aspect is confidence. Own your body-type and apologize to no one for it.
@YukiTombo
@YukiTombo 5 лет назад
@@unneighborlyarcades6356 Very true. My ex-husband is also a FG and in *no* way meets the usual standard for a "masculine" body, but he just owned it. For his other faults, I do admire him for that and I think it helped me to embrace my own weird body. And I've always hated my naturally thin, wispy hair and longed for long, thick wavy hair...but now I know that it would look a bit strange on me even if I had it. Now it's just one of the A answers on my Kibbe test. It's cool that you've figured out that you can use your body type to an advantage in your profession. I'm a university lecturer amongst other things, and maybe my FG-ness can help me put on that "quirky professor" persona. My students have told me "I can't tell if you're 25 or 40..." It helps me relate to them, but also command respect when I need to.

@@unneighborlyarcades6356 Interesting! I liked hearing your thoughts on this. I also wonder if Josephine Baker was some sort of gamine (speaking of physical comedians playing with gender expectations). I've been trying to type her for a while and was hovering around SD, but... that just doesn't seem right.
@unneighborlyarcades6356

@@YukiTombo In my own experience, long hair can look alright if it's styled. I had to set it and brush it in a way that made it pretty "froofy" in order for it to look nice at the length of my shoulders, but then I looked like a bobble-head. So, "long, thick, wavy" hair can look nice-curling hair gives the illusion of thick hair, you know. Is your hair cut short now? Oh my, comedy isn't my profession! It's really just a love that I insert where ever possible and pursue as a hobby and think a lot about. I am currently studying accounting. I do think that "ambiguous age" thing gamines seem to have can be very helpful in your profession, as you say. I also find that, in social situations, that FG-ness makes me non-threatening and so, I'm not seen as "competition". It's come in handy. I imagine you've probably had a similar advantage?

A lot of people have claimed she has typed them incorrectly though, tending to type people as gamines. I think she lost some credibility when she mistyped herself as soft gamine. Granted, it's hard to see yourself, but at the prices she charges you would think she would know that she has way too long of a vertical line and is too yang for SG to even be a possibility. Kinda hard to trust someone to type you when they don't have their own down.

I was like, 90% sure I was a soft natural, but after watching this video I'm starting to consider that I could be some sort of gamine! I feel that natural lines can sometimes make me look a bit bulky. I want to experiment with different looks now to see if I've misclassified myself.

Thank you for these videos. I initially tested myself as a Classic body type, watched your classic body type profile and started realising that I am definitely not a classic and re-tested myself. I am a Gamine- apparently a Flamboyant Gamine (hopefully I did the test right, but can see that I am more Gamine). I do like colour blocking and mixing slim/tight bottoms with looser tops- etc. Now looking at the specific items that could suit a Flamboyant Gamine, I have naturally gravitated towards those things.

Hi, I don’t care how long your videos run; always so very interesting. I was in my 20’s in the 1980’s-is never heard of David Kibbe and I was so into fashion. I’m really fascinated to see all the differences and learn about the body types. It would save people so much time, effort and money, if we could learn our body types and skin undertone at an early age. We would be able to choose wisely and quickly when getting clothing, colours, makeup, jewelry and style. It’s hard when you’re young and you just have to experiment and make expensive mistakes. I’m grateful for your interest in these subjects. Please do Dramatics soon 💜

@merriamstyle 5 лет назад
Oh my gosh thank you Jubilee and thank you for being so generous and sending in your photos for the videos! The resistance to image identity is something that I should really talk about. I think as I learn more about Kibbe, I find that I love the idea of simply seeing your lines as nothing more than a set of lines, rather than a personal style. I think this is a bit more 'objective' anyway.....and can get rid of a lot of those stereotypes that can cause way more resistance than necessary!
@chicstreetbyjubilee

Merriam Style Yes Merriam, I think you’re absolutely right about the stereotypes causing a lot of the image resistance! After watching your videos I started looking at the types as just a collection of lines and that has helped me a lot! I have always been called pretty or cute, rarely sexy or womanly.. that had always made me feel awkward in my own body, like I’m stuck in a state of permanent adolescence 😂 I wonder if there’s any way we soft gamines can look more grown up and womanly if we want to.. anyway Merriam thank you so much again for including my photos and keep doing all that you do! What you said about flamboyant gamines wearing soft gamine lines resonates with me. I have a shirt that, despite having quite yin elements, I like on myself because it brings out my "boyishness" while maintaining my femininity. "Take that, Kibbe!" Said I. I'll try my best to describe the shirt because, try as I might, I can't find an image online. I will also explain my woeful ignorance because everything Kibbe said was true-what a fool I was! As well, I think this shirt serves as an interesting case study, as it were. The color is a dusty sort of dark pink and the pattern overall is comprised of small polka-dots in a shade lighter. The actual neckline is high-we see a pattern of small circles-but there is a border in the shape of a square which falls about where the collarbone starts with some roses sewn quite thickly. Because the outer-layer of fabric is very lightweight and opaque, it was necessary to clarify that there are 2 necklines, in a way. The under-fabric is the sort that would be clingy if not for the cut, which is quite “babydoll”. It seems like such a yin shirt. Small, rounded shapes and a floral border. Lightweight fabric, a flowy overall feel. Despite this and despite my obvious yang figure, I like my appearance in this shirt for reasons specified above. What I call my “boyishness in a feminine way”, Merriam calls “angularity”. But, I have to wear pants that are straight-legged and narrow with it, otherwise the whole look is too…something. Not good. As well, because of that square border, the lines of the shirt are quite boxy-it’s “babydoll” in a boxy way. The under-layer of fabric gives it the boxiness and the outer-layer of fabric gives it its “babydoll-ness”. So, a “narrow base” with a boxy top-a mixture of opposites is necessary in my silhouette. In short, everything Merriam said in this video is true. I also wanted to say that I love the woman at 14:00 at the far right-the hairstyle especially. If you notice, it has some asymmetry, which Kibbe recommends for FGs. This is achieved so elegantly with just a side part and with a fringe on just one side. Clearly she proves asymmetry a good recommendation, as well as my theory that 1960s style shift dresses were made for FGs. None of these women do a good job of disproving the “all gamines are cute” stereotype. I loved the ending as well.

Thanks! I love the longer videos and the detail you go into is incredibly helpful!! One question I hope someone can help with: how does one determine yin vs yang flesh? I think I'm confused by the soft/taut comparison and how to assess that. Thanks again!! I really enjoy your channel!

Great video, I can truly see the difference between the 3 gamine types. Before I thought I was a Flamboyant Gamine, but in comparison to the FG's I now know why you typed me as a Dramatic. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos.

Still here dear miss Merriam! I very much enjoyed your seminar as well :) looking forward to the rest and thank you so much for breaking everything down! I had just finished my email with pictures... Too bad I missed out :( But you're so generous to help us all out! After this video I could definitely see myself as some sort of gamine, which I never even considered earlier because I'm tallish (5"6) and have long limbs. So I veered towards natural because of my wider shoulders, but I get lost in those lines, and overall there's not much width to me. Also I have a waist and a little shape to my hips and fleshy thighs and upper arms, but not an overly hourglass shape. Anyway, I'm still kinda confused actually! But thanks to you my mind is open to possibilities! Sorry for the lengthy post!

Are soft gamines doomed to look too young? I’m 31 and people still think I’m 17. How can I look older but not boring?

This was super helpful. I tested as a flamboyant gemine but I do well with certain pieces considered natural (though not in extremes), which made me wonder if I was wrong, but natural still wasn't right. When I looked for outfit examples they felt a bit extreme for my type, but soft and regular gemine felt too tame. Seeing the variety of women and looks here gave me a better idea of how to pull this off with my own style, rather than the stereotypical looks I often see for flamboyant gemines. Looking at my body, my torso and my legs chart pretty differently, which I think is why I can wear certain pieces that aren't typical for the type because I can often "hide" or alter one line into another.

I appreciate the details and examples of the different gamines! I seriously feel like I have ‘found’ more of myself with this seminar 😉 I am definitely a soft gamine. 5.2’ 106lbs, soft facial features is Yin, my essence can be active, but in short burst, then I need to stop and rest. I have always exuded a nerdy vibe and sometimes boyish vibe. I can be a tomboy or ultra feminine (I love salsa dancing and rhumba and it’s rather difficult to dress for this activity and look put together bc most of my normal clothes are athletic and casual). I am a true introvert. My bf says that I can seem ‘unfriendly’ or aloof, but really I am simply deep processing when like that. So, picking outfits that fit my essence is going to be interesting. I lean more towards being mysterious and love outfits that bring this out. Unfortunately, I end up looking a bit emo and depressed 😩 The good news is that there is hope! Thank you for the video! And for all the ladies who shared their images. They all look beautiful in their unique ways 💜

YAYYY so excited to see gamines were next! Very curious about what you would say about someone who had a pure yang face and pure yin body... I've always thought they would have to be a flamboyant gamine or a theatrical romantic, because aren't soft gamines supposed to have a yin dominant face? I don't think I've ever seen you assign theatrical romantic to someone whose face wasn't yin dominant though either. Would you say pure gamine? Does the face possibly carry more weight on a gamine since the body is a mixture of opposites and the eye focuses on the face? You're getting better and better Merriam! much love xox

So it's more about mixes in your answers within each category...? I'm at the moment between theatrical romantic and soft gamine. All yang I have is pretty much in my long limbs/hands and feet, making the first category yang dominant. My face and flesh are totally yin. So, if two categories are yin and only one yang it'd be theatrical romantic > soft gamine...? Am I understanding this correctly..?

I'm a gamine! I'm quite evenly yin-yang so I loved the first example, I wish there were more! It's great to see more examples for how to dress and I get why I don't like most of my clothes, they're not well tailored and oversized. So I'm going to make my clothing style more crisp and color-blocked!

It might sound primitive and obvious, but, I find, the easiest way to be studying, figuring out it all - is really comparing the body-types that people link to each other often... For example, you take FGs, and you try to think/picture what would be different in them, compared to SGs. Through Merriam's videos, for example. The first and obvious thing, would be, of course, - flesh You can compare TRs to SGs. That would be probably the easiest thing you can do, figuring out those, through Merriam's video... They are very close types, both have yin flesh, But SGs have some more yang in them... But stilll this amount of angularity/ yang(and probably some flesh) is not enough to make them SDs... Thinking of FGs, people often mention SDs again... Since there some SGs with big lips, with some "juicy" features People, for an odd reason, compare link these two... And in fact, yes, SDs are really one of the easiest types to describe(in text-book way), and it is comfortable to compare things with them...

Great video and not too long at all - the 26 minutes flew by! I’ve been going back and forth between Soft Natural and some sort of gamine for a while now. Natural lines look awful on me, but I thought I was too large to be a gamine. This video has helped clear all that up! I definitely fit into the gamine category! I don’t know which one yet, but probably flamboyant gamine because I have large hands and feet. (Soft gamines are meant to have small hands and feet right?).

Good Video. You do not look like a soft gamine. You look like a classic or maybe a gamine.You have larger hips and a thin layer of skin around the neck/face area(this might diminish with age). You would look best in classic outfits, picturing you with over the top ruffles and lace not the best look. You hair looks better neat and controlled and you look better in clothes that look new or pressed neatly. Helena Bonham Carter is a soft gamine: her hips and chest are in proportion to each other (your hips look larger than the upper body) she has a soft layer of skin over jaw, neckline and face like Marilyn Monroe. Her hair look great curly and or messy. She is a soft gamine not a romantic because her head is still a bit bigger than normal for her hip size. Off topic about Gamines, if non gamines diet too much they will loose all their body fat making them look like skinny bobble heads and can be mistaken for gamines. The skull doesn't shrink with dieting and there's not as much head fat as body fat.

Helena Bonham Carter is Kibbe-verified romantic. As for me, I look terribly bland in any classic lines, and my hair doesn't look better neat.

Hey Merriam! I love your videos on gamines, out of all the other videos on Kibbe types I finally understood mine from watching your videos, but I’d like to discuss on the whole “tall gamine” myth.. David Kibbe commented on his Facebook page that a tall gamine is indeed a myth and an oxymoron to the concept of gamines and he even corrected that Audrey Hepburn was not 5’7” but 5’5” instead, hence affirming that she is a gamine. I’d love to hear your opinions on this and whether you think that the myth is false?
