When Florentino Perez won the Real Madrid elections in the summer of 2000 while promising to bring Luis Figo from Barcelona, a new era had begun.
Was it a story of success in transforming a club into a global brand?
Or was it a story of failure in how to build a balanced team to compete on the field?
Did the business ambitions exceed the footballing goals?
This is the story of the success and failure of the Galacticos era.

Look at what Chelsea did when they got Makelele and then Mourinho the next year. Yet Florentino thought he could easily be replaced.

Makelele was more like the thing that keep the team balanced and safe from any possibility of things gone terribly wrong. They can still win with Ronaldo and Zidane...providing they didn't get injured or went off form. Ronaldo was injury prone and out of shape, and Zidane had dry spells during his twilight years. That Madrid team can win and lose against the same team in 4-1 due to how bad the defensive midfield and central defenders were.

Why 2009-2018? The only thing defining that period each year is ronaldo, but the club itself has changed drastically - in style, management, players. There's nothing interesting defining the club during those years. 2009-2013 or 2014-2018 would make much more sense and would be more enjoyable. If you want a doco about 2009-2018 just watch something bout ronaldo's time in madrid.

You're either clueless or just started supporting madrid when ronaldo arrived and stopped as soon as he left. Also that's without mentioning the extreme playstyle differences each manager brought along or ronaldo's changing playstyle as he aged.

The golden barca of the late 00s wouldn't be the same without guys like puyol, busquets, Abidal, pedro and mascherano doing the dirty work. Without Roy Keane, Schmeichel, Scholes, neville, solksjaer and later Vidic, Park Ji-sung, Carrick and Ferdinand, Man Utd would never had gone as far as it did. Forget about the titles and accolades, they managed to earn fandom from budding football enthusiasts from all over the world through those big name players. To be fair there are only negatives with Real from 2006-2020, like don't get me wrong they won 4 UCL's as well as a memorable La Decima (hope that's spelt right), but they weren't that good of a team in terms of La Liga, and their teams and playing style was basically the same (having players like Ozil, Di Maria, Higuain, Benzema, Ronaldo etc. for José and Benitez, and then Kroos, Modric, Bale, Varane, James etc. for Ancelotti and Zidane) I mean the best highlight of those years is Cristiano Ronaldo and there's already a Netflix documentary on that. I remember this history very well. The good thing is that Florentino has learned from his mistakes in recent years. Gaining market by performance and trophies is much solid than stars collecting (ongoing eg: PSG?), Barca 2009-2016 contributed in this change in Real Madrid, the competition between them was the best (Barcelona were beter) but the fan base grew massively for both teams. Another fact, with bad quality in defense, that Galacticos policy made the mission even harder for the club, because every team they faced back then had a huge motivation to beat Real Madrid. Thanks to legend and the true hero of that era: Iker Casillas.

The interesting thing - if Makelele and had stayed to play with Beckham, Real would have been unbeatable. This is because Beckham's workrate was always actually his hidden quality. In addition to his skill on the ball, he was defensively astute and so hardworking that he was played in the center on many occasions and was very able to cover for Madrid's deficiencies in the middle (of course not up to Makelele level). However, this took away some of the creative part of his game at Madrid. He and Makelele would have given Madrid a solid and creative core.

man the amount of data research and everything is just admirable. Excellent work, these documentaries are way more entertaining than a lot of bs we find in Amazon Prime or Netflix.

The most compelling music of all Soccer documentaries in all of RU-vid.. I was the stars once, I can live forever.. great song selection to deliver the feeling of greatness during the Galácticos era. Really good work on how the MCF crest slowly comes in at the beginning of the video with the music and your logo while showing the photos of Figo, Ronaldo, and Beckham. Embodies the greatness of that era of Madrid.

That team, while unbalanced, during the Del Bosque era sometimes played such beautiful football. Still remember fondly how the team danced on the field with Zidane conducting the orchestra. Although the bad 2004-2006 and the fact that the teams during CR7's era were stronger, that was an unforgettable team.

It's an amazing coincidence that Claude Makalele became the world's best player, perhaps in the history of the game, to play the 'Makalele' role. It's like he was named after the role. The only thing that could top this would be Reading striker George Puscas scoring an amazing goal to win the Puskas award.

Another magnificent video. You are an example for quality over quantity. I could repeat what I've said about your other videos in this one. Love the music choices, the research is great. I've had Sid Lowe's book on the backburner for awhile, will have to crack open. Can't wait for another video, praying for something on Napoli winning the League, maybe something on Neverkusan, or perhaps the Divine Ponytail. Whatever you do next I look forward to it. Keep up the great work, really hope this channel grows, you really deserve.

I was just 2-3 year old at that time, and after all these years after watching Figo going to Inter made me emotional!!! Zidane's volley gave me goosebumps!! It was so emotional video for a Madridista, I'm a fan since 2009!! Anyways great information, great and hardwork will always be respected and appreciated!!!! Hala Madrid!!
