ABOUT THIS VLOG
➡ It's finally time for another adventure in Northern Portugal, where so many of you guys have said that this is the REAL Portugal, where you get REAL Portuguese food. Now we get to see if you are right!
We were invited on this trip by Marco Neiva from Oh My Media who also has a vlog.
It's a so-called Fam-Trip, where influencers and journalists are invited with the purpose of promoting an area. In this case it's Baixo Tamega, which is close to Douro Valley.
The Fam-Trip is three days long with an action-packed program from morning to evening.
On our first day we meet all the people at the wonderful hotel, Monverde Wine Experience Hotel, where we enjoyed a superb wine-tasting of some of the best wines from the area of Vinho Verde, which we learned is NOT a green wine, as there is no such thing!
After the wine-tasting we went to the beautiful town of Amarante that is a hotspot for Portuguese culture and history. This town is so charming and beautiful that we instantly bookmarked this for another trip, as we only had the evening here to enjoy Portuguese food at the amazing Restaurant Ze Da Calcada. It really was Portuguese food at its best!
NEW HERE?
-
We're Amalie and Joen. A Danish couple from Copenhagen who have moved to Lisbon, Portugal.
This vlog is all about showing our new home, how life in Portugal is and of course a bunch of epic adventures around this beautiful country.
We hope you'll stick around. :-)

Of course REAL Portugal is ALL of Portugal, but we had to make the joke as a response to so many of you guys (from the North) saying that food from Lisbon isn't REAL Portuguese food, haha! But to be honest, we did get a whole new perspective of Portuguese food on this trip, but you will have to wait for the next vlogs to find out just how good food from North Portugal really is! Cheers

People from the North don´t know what they are saying ! North of Portugal has good food of course but, center as good food and Alentejo and Algarve have the best food ! People from the North can be good people but sometimes they think themselfs as superiors in some way. You should notice that they (North people) call us (Southern people) Mouros ( from Muslim Mouro) so you know now why they talk the way they talk . But for sure, north has the most beautiful landscapes in the world so enjoy :)

In Portugal we have two main sorts of wine, "vinho maduro" and "vinho verde" wich can be translated "matured wine" and " "acid wine". It's called "verde" because the grapes are not so sweet as the others just like by comparison the bananas are green till its maturation. Did I made myself clear?....Hope you've enjoyed that beautiful region of Tâmega.
@ES-ge7bb
@ES-ge7bb 5 лет назад
Correct me if I’m wrong, but my father, born and lived many years in Minho, said that it’s not true that grapes used to make vinho verde are not ripe. They are ripe but just a different variety. And if my memory serves me well, I think he told me that verde reflects the colour of the region and its vineyards. Any locals care to agree or disagree?
@nelson1953
@nelson1953 5 лет назад
@@ES-ge7bb In fact the vinho verde region begins at Douro Litoral and goes up to Minho and it is very green indeed but that's not the reason we call it "vinho verde". The truth is that those grapes are acid and they're just used to make wine. You can eat them but they are not what we call "uvas de mesa" (grapes to eat). The grapes to eat must be very sweet, not all the grapes are sold for that purpose. At Minho, Douro litoral and Beira litoral there's another sort of wine ( american wine-wild wine) but they cannot trade it because it's illegal and not good for health and the grapes are even more acid but that wine tastes good.😅
@nunoferreira1369
@nunoferreira1369 5 лет назад
@@nelson1953 nao achei apropriado a comparaçao com bananas verdes. Fica a impressao que as uvas sao colhidas "verdes"... as uvas sao colhidas na altura certa de maturaçao
@rui.7094
@rui.7094 5 лет назад
Basically vinho verde is no more than a named wine region. The vinho verde typical style is with a little fizz, inexpensive, high acidity. In my opinion should be called Minho but for a question of marketing or history mistaken it work very well for the region. The reason to be given that name is because the region is the coolest in Portugal and also one of the wettest in Europe, (average ABV 12%) which means less warm and sunlight. The reflect of a cool climate is low grape sugar = low alcohol and high acidity. Vinho verde is equally compared internationally among other high acidic wine like Muscadet(Loire valley) Riesling(Germany) and of course the wines from Galicia(Spain).
@HeavenlyEx
@HeavenlyEx 4 года назад
Nelson Correia, I think you are confused. "Vinho Verde" or Green wine is a demarcated region that goes from Douro Litoral up to Alto Minho provinces. It is a region where some specific grape varieties are cultivated, and the grapes look like they are acid due to their nature and climate, but they are indeed fully matured. There is Vinho Verde from White or Red grapes, so it has nothing to do with its colour also. "Vinho Maduro" as you called it, is nothing more than every other wine variety that is not Green Wine. Its a typical expression used in the north only to describe generically all the wines that are not green. For instance: Douro, Dão, Setubal, Alentejo, Estremadura, Bairrada, Algarve, Madeira etc. etc. etc. are examples of "Vinho Maduro". So as a resume, its not 2 main sorts of wine, because Green Wine (Vinho Verde) is as relevant as every other type of "Vinho Maduro" that I mentioned. In fact there are least 14 different demarcated wine regions in Portugal.

Great video, as usual, not with the scenic focus from the few last ones (doesn't need to be, of course), but definitely with the "stay classy" (and wonderful) editing touch. I think I could already identify one of your videos even if I didn't know it was yours. You have a unique "signature" in your editing. I can't quite pinpoint it, but it's great, whatever it is. Maybe the way you combine image with audio (masterfully done), maybe the contrasts in the subject matter from one second to the next that surprise us, or the logical connection in said subject matters (which delight us). Like a "familiar surprise".

One easy tip about the language: if a word has an accent in some vowel, that's the vowel you should stress, otherwise it sounds really strange. You pronounced "Tâmega" and "Campanhã" wrongly because you didn't follow this rule. In the first case, you stressed "e" but you should stress the "â". In "Campanhã" you stressed the middle "a" but you should stress the final "ã".

You can get very good food anywhere in Portugal. However, on average, Portuguese food is much better in the North, because that's the original Portuguese food (Lisbon has one famous dish, which is called "bacalhau à braz" and which I love). The Douro region is amazing, but the Minho region is maybe even better (of course the Douro is the Portuguese capital of wine). Trás-os-Montes has also fantastic meat dishes (very heavy). Porto has a bit of a mix of the whole northern gastronomy.

Quite near from that city of Amarante there's a small town (Baião) where you can have a very traditional nothern dish "cabrito assado" roasted goat in the traditional rural hoven with roasted potatoes and it's super delicious with a good red wine. You shouln't miss.

I don't have a way to prove it. I just have in my mind that vinho verde is diferent cus it takes less time to produce it. I guess under 4 years. So it is kind of a fast food wine what is not ready but still is delicious.

If u look u also can find very tradicional portuguese food in lisboa. But maybe locals know better. I can understand that tourists places are kind diferent like many places in algarve but because many that come here dont want to eat our food and qant to eat their food. Yes in the end is our fault. But also some business are not from portuguese people. Is like everywhere.
@joenandamalie
@joenandamalie 5 лет назад
Well it’s pretty much the same in all big cities in the world. The food are developing and changing because it’s influenced by all the different people an cultures in a big city. We really appreciate these traditional restaurants but we are also very pleased that we can go for sushi, burgers and Asian fusion in lovey Lisbon. To us diversity is important but my god, Portuguese food is mind blowing 😅🥰🇵🇹
@ivoneneto7075
@ivoneneto7075 5 лет назад
@@joenandamalie yes also true. But for exemple in south portugal algarve. Is not influencieted by people from other countries living there, but for tourists that come like from UK thar we want fry ships and fry fish or hamburgers. In lisboa not so much.

It's true that food in Lisbon is way overpriced than in the center or north of the coutry and not so much traditional. Actually, that restaurant wasn't the most traditional also ahah. Check good traditionals restaurantes at TripAdvisor ans you should find nice ones. And, try francesinha!!!!!!!!

Ei, I have seen videos from those brazilian fellows before :) Nuno and Erica, they are trying to get into the portuguese culture just like you, and not trying the opposite. Marco had a great ideia, invinting you. He invited those 2 brazilian couples some time ago, to taste a northern dish called "foda" (translated means fuck), goat meat and rice. You would love it, especially Joen. Those "pasteis de bacalhau" are the real deal, not like those fancy ones made for tourists. Next week, you will have the Santo António in Lisbon, with grilled sardines in the streets, are you going to be there?

In Portuguese, verde means both a color and something that is not still ripe. That is what vinho verde is. Made with grapes that are not yet completely ripe.

You know when a fruit is not totally ripe yet? When that happens, in portugues You say it is green (verde), like it's not totally matured. Like: "this orange isn't ripe, it's acid, don't eat it." So, vinho verde, is wine made from not totally ripe grapes. Either "dark grapes or clearer" grapes. If You see grapes that are used to do white wine, they are kind of yellowish/green. Red wine grapes can be almost black, or a profund half bluish purple kind of thing (I know this apparently doesn't make sense but I think You understand). So, vinho verde is always made from not totally ripe grapes, early harvest, it's a condition, not a color.
