For some it’s the only way to get out of their town or situation . Especially in places with generational poverty . I joined because I had no way to pay for college and I wasn’t going to take out loans . Also people think everyones going to the front lines but most are just in support positions .

I joined the army and I loved it best eight years of my life and I was a combat medic.

Actually, I was ok with joining when I was fresh out of high school and the recruiter taught me that I could push my limits farther than I thought. I figured there hadn't been a war, that I could be sent to, in at least 5 years, so I should be fine anyways... however that was August 2001. 😅

During Vietnam that war was the last that had a draft, and was fought primarily by the lower middle-class boys, the lower-class boys, and the boys from the rural areas. The boys from wealthy families, families who had power and/ or influence, and the boys of the politicians basically could avoid serving. Robert McNamara, one of the architects of the Vietnam War, had two sons who were old enough to serve but didn't. It was during this war that the term Chickenhawk came into being. @@refrweerf I’m Autistic, have a pretty severe anxiety disorder, depressive tendencies, whole bunch of learning disabilities, asthma, carpal tunnel, I’m trans, (and assigned female at birth, and still listed as female legally for now,) and a lifelong pacifist. And the conditions are just the diagnosed ones. I’m in a whole bunch of testing because there’s definitely more. Lucky for me, the army wants nothing more to do with me than I want to do with it. Which is like negative twelve.

I don’t actually advocate compulsory military service for anyone, btw. In addition to individual ethical concerns, I think that makes for an overly nationalist citizenry, as does seem to be the case with Israel... (granted, many other countries have issues here too)...

Israel, Sweden, Norway, and North Korea. The only democratic countries that have all male drafts are Switzerland, Finland, South Korea, and Greece. Sorry if I left any out.
