I recently had bad bots maxing out the CPU time and bandwidth on my Siteground hosting account.
Hosts don't like it when you hijack all the resources of a shared server and often suspend your hosting account.
There are times when this traffic is legitimate traffic from real visitors. If that's the case you need to upgrade your hosting account to give you more resources.
But in my example, it was caused by bad bots that did not obey the rules of my robots.txt file.
This tutorial shows you how the Black Hole For Bad Bots plugin by Jeff Starr came to my rescue.

Hi, I just bought the plugin through your link, little support for your useful videos.... I have one question.... In the section "Robot Rules" it says: "Important note about cache plugins" suggesting to disable page caching. Have you disabled "Page caching" in WP rocket as suggested in the plugin Black Hole? I would rather not, because this would impact the speed. So I wonder if you did that or you are using it without disabling the page caching? Thanks, Angel

You cannot use the plugin without disabling caching, which kinda makes it useless imo if you are concerned about speed

Great video, thanks Bjorn! If my website traffic goes via a cdn like cloudflare I won't need that plugin, right? Because I think I saw in my cloudflare stats "X bytes bandwith saved". But still, if this is the case (that a cdn filters the bad bots) the plugin would still be a good solution for a site without a cdn.

Thanks for Blackhole for Bad Bots plugin! Got it and installed immediately! Lifetime pro is really reasonable, too! I can't get AWStats to display so my permissions must be wrong. Do you know how I can check this without going through hosting techs? They're really busy right now and I like to try first, myself.

Hi Bjorn, have you noticed a change in your users' traffic? Does this plugin risk affecting good users or good bots? I was asking myself that while waiting for a change in analytics statistics. Greetings.

I've been using this plugin for almost a year and I have noticed any decrease in site speed or visitorship. Pageviews and visits have gone up since I've installed it, but that's not because of this plugin. That's due to publishing content. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions. Bjorn, thank you for the video, it is very useful. Do you know if the functionality provided by blackhole for bad bots is something that you can get using iThemes Security Pro or WebARX? If not, have you ever used a Security plugin or SASS such as those in conjunction with blackhole for bad bots? Thanks

Hi Miguel, I believe Wordfence has the blackhole functionality built-in, WebARX doesn't as far as I know and I'm not sure about iThemes Security Pro either. I'm running WebARX and blackhole for bad bots on my main site right now and I haven't encountered any issues. I hope that helps :) Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for watching!

Is this plugin unnecessary if we are running Wordfence? I had someone else tell me that running this plugin alongside Wordfence is redundant and not needed. Thanks.

Hi Jeff, . Good question, I'm not 100% certain. Wordfence has a lot of great features so I wouldn't be surprised if something like this was built into it.

My logs show extensive requests coming in while Wordfence (free) is running. I assume WordFence is blocking access, but it may be less drain on server resources if the bot is kicked out when it starts. I don't bother with IP blocking because my attackers seem to run constant IP changers and just continue trying.

What is advantage and disadvantage of using page builder........

The big advantage is that page builders allow you to create great looking pages quickly and easily without knowing any HTML, CSS or JavaScript. The big downside is that any page builder-created page will be larger in size than if you code the page yourself. Which will make it take longer to load. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Would you prefer this over a complete WAF solution, such as Wordfence?

Nope as this just tackles bots. WordFence offers so much more. For instance you can lock down your admin login to your IP Address only or chosen IP Addresses so only you can change site/settings etc. There are many other benefits to WordFence. I wondered whether you resell hosting from Siteground or purchase accounts for individual clients? Feel free to mail me direct if you care not to divulge in public. I have a number of clients on a reseller account but not on SiteGround. I don't have any clients with SSL yet but need to sort out a good place to host them as my present supplier will charge £100+VAT (20%) to provide static IP and also install an SSL. So I'm looking for recommendations... perhaps another tutorial in that would be useful?
