Real Road Test: Hyundai Stellar - standard and V8!

This time, I compare a bog standard Hyundai Stellar Mk2 with a Mk1 that has a Rover V8 under the bonnet! The V8 has been featured before, but now has an Edelbrock carburettor for extra LOLs. It really is quite the sleeper.

Why are these vehicle reviews soooo much more satisfying than vicarious gushings over the latest $$$$ supercars?
@adrianlw2750
@adrianlw2750 5 лет назад
Because supercars are cheque book motoring, irrelevant to most. Cars like this (V8) have character and a soul that cannot be bought from a glossy show room. Their imperfection is some of the appeal too.

Only on a HubNut video would you hear the words 'magnificently' and 'beige' uttered in the same sentence!

At 400lbs complete it's a great V8. They don't get much love over in in the States though. A Ford 289/302 with aluminum heads weighs only 50 lbs more and is cheaper to build.

Are you confusing this engine with the Rover Meteorite. A V8 version of the Meteor ?

I don't think I would ever get bored of surprising drivers of modern BMW & Audi & Mercedes etc when setting off from the lights in the V8 Stellar. The look on their faces would be priceless. Probably the best Q car ever.

After a trio of dire Ford company cars back in the 90s the company I worked for then gave me a new '97 Hyundai Lantra. Hyundai were still a lesser-known car manufacturer back then so I was a bit sceptical but I needn't have worried; it was a breath of fresh air after the Fords in pretty much every aspect including dealer servicing & I did 120,000 trouble-free miles in it over 2 years. Because of that I still hold that manufacturer in high regard to this day. That V8 is absolutely wonderful & is my sort of car; standard looking but with an unusual twist & oh that sound! :-)

Ahhh you have brought back memories! Back in 1986 when I was just 19 I bought a Hyundai Pony 1.3L - the basic model! Loved that car, but swapped it a few years later for a more trendy MG Metro. I have held affection for Hyundai ever since! My older colleague Jim had a Stella. I thought it was amazing. At that time all those knobs & buttons, electric windows, electric aerial, auto reverse cassette. Younger people may be laughing now, but air con and stuff like that was reserved for high end cars like Jags & top of the range Rovers or Ford Granada Ghias Basic cars had wind down windows and just a radio. Thanks for another great video :-)

I think that would be true of a flat plane V8 but a cross plane V8 like the Rover V8 is odd firing so can have more or less than two cylinders firing at any one time.

My first visit to Korea in 1998 and I was introduced to these lovely Korean cars. I had an amazing time in Korea - my favourite time tho, being in the amazing Daewoo Tico, a car full of koreans and a very 'big' westerner hammering along the motorway as this tiny car overtook a full squad of Korean soldiers in huge trucks cheering us on as we just about overtook :) If you ever have the opportunity to get a Tico, you will have 2 challenges, finding one, then getting in it (its smaller than a Matiz)

I had an early Sonata in 1990 in Kitwe, Zambia. Engine was 2,4l Mitsubishi and it drank fuel. We had 2 in the company, both same heavy fuel consumption that the importers could never solve. Was a comfortable car on the lousy roads of that era, loads of potholes, went through a set of shocks in 23 000km ! I had it for 3 years until I left Zambia. My daughter had a Hyundai i10 auto here in S Africa, now has a Kia Picanto auto in UK, basically the same car, both good cars, value for money.

I remember seeing Hyundai Stellar ads in the newspapers in the early-mid 80s which showed a picture of a jelly mould and a slogan saying something like "disappointed with the new Ford Sierra? Look at the Stellar instead." It seemed to make perfect sense given the comparative costs, customer backup and trim levels etc.

When I worked for FIAT in the late 80's two executives visited a Hyundai dealer to discuss them taking over the Fiat franchise. As they were leaving their new Croma broke down and the dealer lent them his Sonata to return home. Their problem was made worse by the fact that they could not call out the local Fiat dealer as that would have begged the question " What are you doing visiting other dealers on my patch."

Ian: The Rover V8 certainly does it justice. It really wakes it up making it a "walk in the park" especially when you need good acceleration for passing. These are wonderful V8's to work with, they're very tunable. I've worked on a few of these and you can get great performance out of them. They can safely be opened up to 5.2 litres(around 320 C.I). I've 300+ hp and more out of them. With the right gearing, a vehicle finished with one of these can be a real road rocket. Have a gr8 God blessed day. Please say hello to Mrs Hubnut.

We never got these in the states. They did have them in Canada and being as I lived in Florida, we got a lot of Canadian tourists. I was fascinated whenever I saw one of these. The “HD” logo on the steering wheel looks like it belongs on a truck or tractor. The later all beige interior car reminds me of a friend’s 88 Hyundai Excel. A very slow car that was fun to abuse on curvy roads

Seem to remember these Hyundais being slagged off by the mainstream British motoring press when they were new but I was always intrigued by them. Eventually bought a new Hyundai Lantra in the nineties, which we took on several holidays to Italy without any problems at all. The Stellar's looks have aged well and it's nice to see the survivors. I prefer the original interior and that V8 is great. Thanks

In the United States, we never got the Stellar model. Hyundai cars imported here at that time were always small and simple. It wasn't until much later that Hyundai moved more upscale with the Azera, Genesis and Equis.

In the UK too, the larger Hyundais were rare, they tended to be bought by the older person, not interested in style but tempted by all the goodies on offer for a price that would have otherwise bought a poverty spec euro car. However, by the time they were 5 or 6 years old they always seemed to have bits missing that had fallen off, so when grandad's hips failed and he tried to sell it on, it just wasn't 'cool' enough for the younger driver so values plummeted and most of them disappeared. Saying that I reckon it looks quite cool now in 2019.
@damieg82
@damieg82 5 лет назад
Keep in mind that the Stellar is about the size of a Honda Accord of the day, so still very compact. Thereafter, the Sonata would have been the largest car they offered, before the introduction of the XG, which predates the Azera and others. The XG I'd say was their first proper near-luxury large car (at least outside of Korea).

Err... no. But I'll happily doff my chapeau to anyone who can get that massive lump of an engine from a very dissimilar car into the bay of a Stellar. _How_ it was done would make a great video. When you think of the clutch, gearbox, gear change, pipework, linkages, clearances, wiring, changes to braking, steering, suspension... urgh! my brain hurts! OK, you could never 'justify' the cost of the time involved, but what incredible fun.

And he succeeded, I hope? I had engines in and out a few years back but always a variant of what was _intended_ to be under the bonnet, and still hit major hassle on occasion (Citroën forum take a bow). Guys doing one-off swaps must hit really big snags. Apparently, lots of half-completed specials never actually see the road again.
