This video shows a demonstration of a Sinclair ZX Microdrive and vDrive ZX connected to a ZX Spectrum via an Interface 1.
I show access times in real time and make some time-based comparisons between the physical Microdrive and the vDrive, including formatting a cartridge, reading and writing and loading a game.
Take a look at the awesome products available on the vRetro Design web site - www.vretrodesi...

I love seeing how many people this little machine has had a impact on over the years. I'll never forget the fun I had on this machine.

I've found the vDrive ZX to be 100% reliable which is a real boon to using the IF1/Microdrive experience without the hassle to unreliable original media.

I had a microdrive 1st time around. If you copied files in reverse order you would load them the next time the game would load faster.

How did you get the microdrive connected to the v-drive ? V-drive's left plug is way too short for the cable connector to get through.

From memory, I used the standard joiner that you'd use to join two microdrives together.

In many ways, games consoles and even PC's have issues in loading times today. Hence the m.2 Systems used in the very latest consoles. Most PC's don't have physical drives in them today. I do have one large physical drive on my PC because it is cheap for the capacity you get and load times is not an issue for everything that I use a PC for plus backup on a physical drive is the safest way to store backups. Also when loading Manic Miner form the Microdrive, why didn't you get the coloured lines that you get from a tape recorder playing, I assume they are the same media and the difference is the Microdrive just spins faster? Correct me if I'm wrong. P.S. Interesting video and I will look at you Microdrive repair/refurbish video.

The lines during loading are actually a small program loaded in during basic that contains faster loading routines to allow a higher baud rate, with the lines being a visualiser(you can tell loading has failed by the pattern) of sorts for the loading process. When a game is copied to a Microdrive, that loader isn't copied over, as it's usually the result of a RAM dump from a pre-loaded game.

Do you need an original Microdrive to use the vDrive.

No, the microdrive can be used alone. Thanks.
