Louise Mensch was the Member of Parliament for my home town over the pond in England a few years ago and she resigned for retweeting someones tweet that named a rape victim, something that was considered illegal and an abuse of her position as a serving MP (Member of Parliament), along with neglecting her constituents , whilst managing to post a shit load of tweets on twitter every day that constantly got her in some media spotlight for the wrong reasons. In the end with one thing and another, she got that much flak she left the UK for the US. Four years on and shes managed to get on Bills Mahers' show, and she still chats shit out her ass! Just saying!

Oh you can, but not from a libertarian standpoint. Most libertarians want all illegal drugs to be legalized and let each individual deal with the fallback to that themselves. Some illegal drugs are just not meant to be played around with like that.

That was pretty much Britain's initial plan anyway, right? Looneys to America and criminals to Australia. However, I think we got a little too good at manufacturing our own. Keep sending the looneys here, just throw in a Christopher Hitchens every once and a while and we'll call it square.

Yeah, she's so awful! And she outright lied about the Brexit campaign and vote. She said all of Britain is so proud of the vote to leave the EU. Of course Americans will just buy what she said because they are not that educated on world politics. It's not wholly their fault. We don't have a BBC so Americans only get domestic news. If you're interested in an American's perspective who lives in the UK you might be interested to read this article: medium.com/@nickog/overlooked-yet-obvious-brexits-worst-potential-legacy-5898f9d1ed49#.wdoubgrhi

I get the concept behind Libertarian rule, but to rely on the people and market is not a good thing either, we/they are too easily influenced and impulsive. Take a look at Facebook and see what i mean, people supporting victims of the Orlando shooting, other people praising the shooter etc. Its usually the overly extrovert people that take up most of the space and time, pushing and shoving people around. I think that there are too many idiots around to rely on their cooperation, its doing horrible things to any political system all over the world. They do need to be kept in check in some way, but i think a Libertarian led country would eventually divide States more into separate countries, because if a government does not have enough power to stop the people, it might as well become Mad Max, volunteered segregation like the Brexit would be common practice. States like Texas would be one of the first to Secede most likely. Independence is fun and all, but there needs to be a balance, because a market can shift like ebb and flow, moving jobs and wealth along with its currents. If there is no proper plan to patch up the divides and rapid changes, we will end up right where we are right now soon enough. So i would rather see some form of Libertarian, as in more power to people, effectively making it more social leaning, but also with an equal government, or simply put, Let's try to get along, agree to disagree without bashing your head in, but mostly to prevent a disconnect. We are on this planet together, the age of tribalism and isolation is no longer sustainable, because we know too much about everyone already, eyes everywhere. The people and governments are failing Globalization, Earth itself could do fine without us, but its capacity is limited and i really dont feel like Soylent Green. Start scouting for new planets already, because if we dont get off our greedy habits, or as a desperate measure to somehow decimate the world's population.. conflicts like they are happening right now will only occur more often. Were like a flock of locusts, but we have no other place to escape to, no haven, its all the same bullshit everywhere. I really think we need to start looking at colonization more seriously.
@PuzzleBox83

They were even being easy on him. They didn't even get into all of the departments that the libertarians want to get rid of like the EPA and Education. He also thinks privatizing the prison system in his state was his biggest achievement. Prisons being ran like corporations is part of the problem in the justice system. When prisoners are your way of generating the profit motive for the corporation there is a huge conflict of interest.

Gary Johnson and another candidate ( They're really that tedious I can't even remember them ) hold some very anti-Libertarian positions. Gary Johnson went on about gun control, I know that for certain and also two of the three candidates cited the gender pay gap as real when it is constantly being proven to be bullshit, the gender pay gap is one of the most constantly told lies in politics. I like Libertarianism, but unfortunately mainstream Libertarian candidates have become a total joke sadly, Ron Paul was one of the only real ones.

80 years of welfare and yet blacks are in the same position as they were in when welfare started...Liberal policies are cancer. Take the plantation from the farm to the urban cities and convince groups for lifetime votes...the party that started the KKK as well. Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Johnson, known racists. Libertarian polices are what is needed instead of asinine dependent by the state cultural marxist bullshit.

@shawnw1965
@shawnw1965 8 лет назад
Because the only factor of blacks being in the same position is welfare........ that was about the most short-sighted statement I think I've ever read. Let's not add in the drug war at all that definitely incarcerates minorities more than whites even though drugs such as marijuana are used by races almost completely equally. "Dependent by the state". Something that has been going on since the day government was founded. No silly ideals are going to change that without some sort of anarchy. Otherwise, you will always have some sort of dependency of the state.

What an utterly stupid question to Johnson and it shows why he isn't half the candidate Ron Paul was. The free market is not the cause. It's not an entity. People caused and it and people have to fix it. That's just the reality.
@pendorran
@pendorran 8 лет назад
Solving Climate Change requires Innovation. Innovation is driven more forcefully and successfully by the free market, in the form of consumer pressure and, most of all, the profit motive, than by any other mechanism. I'm not anti-government. I'm not against regulations. But regulation alone can't fix the problem. Johnson is correct. Melber is being disingenuous.
@Newvials
@Newvials 8 лет назад
But this is based of the assumption consumers good will is to purchase the better for the environment supplies (which is not always the case), most of the time consumer purchase is driven by efficiency and affordability. While the big business motive is usually 110% profit motive, hence whatever sells more and cheaper is always going to work for them. I just don't think absolute free market is going to cater to the good will of all people, there will be greed and there will be ignorance. Now innovations do indeed occur eventually with competition deciding when, but when these innovations have to deal with our ozone layer I think it should be safer regulating more now instead of waiting for the free market to decide when/how to innovate.

+Big Boss socialism is not state capitalism we in America have the completely wrong definition of socialism it means society specifically workers controlling the means of production what you are saying is that your against state capitalism when the state undertakes the means of production and distribution within a economy.But than again the state is often times a better and more ethical capitalist than private firms. one example would be the economic mobilization during the new deal when private corporations couldn't or even is some instances refused to provide employment, a good example would how the TVA provided electricity at a lower cost and just has good service. or even today with Medicare having a lower overhead cost than the private healthcare companies. The uncritical hero worship of capitalism is in my opinion folly.

The problem is that providing solutions to climate change won't make significant money so companies aren't willing to spend the necessary billions in investment to see a profit in thirty years. Government can go beyond a profit margin, focus on long term, leverage money more easily etc. Even now much of renewable energy and climate change solutions are only possible because of government grants/loans etc otherwise the market would still not done much.

I don't think that Gary Johnson's response to the climate change question was very good, and I will actually be voting for him this year. However, overall, it is a fair point. Government policy changes come as a consequence of people changing. So of course, if there is a push for government policies to stop climate change, it will coincide with the market being more environmentally friendly. Government's role would be to penalize polluters. How much? That is subjective and requires people to be reasonable. Unfortunately, I believe that Bill is a bit of an alarmist. He obsesses over this issue despite the fact that each decade the IPCC has had to make its forecast more conservative. His alarmism and push for rapid change will impact a lot of people negatively. Let the change be urgent but not abrupt; that is the best way to deal with this. We are already seeing technology become so much more energy efficient. By the way, the question posited by the man on the left of the panel can be answered with several examples. The mistake is in failing to realize that the Industrial Revolution presented solutions to problems that existed at the time. Of course, the same system that brought about problem solving in the Industrial Revolution can foster problem solving in today's world.

jesushatesyoutoo I agree about not subsidizing polluters. I think that it would be better for there to be a penalty on polluters rather than tax breaks to anti-polluters (lot of room for corruption). I don't know why you got so angry. My belief is not even that far from yours
@johnsurs22
@johnsurs22 8 лет назад
chasemebaby It depends what you consider a wasted vote. For example, if the libertarians get 5% of the popular vote, they qualify for federal funding in the next election. It also forces the Republican party to change significantly. And really, getting on to the debate stage gives Johnson a real chance to win. The difference between 2012 and now is that Trump and Hillary have all time low favorability. In 2012, Republicans were not going to leave Romney and let Obama win. Democrats were not going to leave Obama to let Romney win. Trump and Hillary are that bad and unlikeable. People have the same attitude as me, which is that they were not going to vote for Trump or Hillary anyways, so they might as well vote for someone else.

How many people know what fuels the plant that makes their electricity use? How many people directly buy coal? Consumer of coal for the most part are electric producing facilities, not the user of electricity. Market for feed stock in electricity sector (coal, natural gas, geo, solar, nuclear)is only minimally controlled by consumer of electricity. Owners/operators of electrical power plants have to have incentive or penalties imposed to force change. I don't think much would happen if every electric power consumer called their power company and demanded that they used alternative fuel if they are sitting next to coal field or easy access to one. Corporations owe as much to share holders as they do to consumers. They are not going to go through expense of conversion if not forced.

Are you an economist? What is your background? My economics background may be limited to macro and micro, but from what I have read, many economists say there is not enough data to take a firm stance on any hypothesis. However, if I'm wrong on this matter, could you point me into the direction of some solid data. Offshoring and automation is happening whether we raise the minimum wage or not. My vote is to give American citizens a livable wage. I agree with you that all candidates should be on the debate stage. The American people need every voice up there that we can get and holding any persons out is a grave disservice to the American public.
@phil7394
@phil7394 8 лет назад
I get what you are saying, and I have seen it argued both ways. Like I said, the best information I could find on the subject, something like 40% of the economists were undecided on the outcome. The rest were split on both sides. My next question to you would be, do you even support a minimum wage?

The problem with the Green Party in this country, in my view is that they don't run enough of a grass roots system to get Greens into municipal and state offices. In Europe they seem to have a better grasp on building from the ground up, rather than only showing their faces every four years for the general election. Now, I could be wrong about this in general terms, but in all of the local and state elections I have voted in (and I have not missed one since 1975 when I turned 18), I have rarely seen a Green candidate.

Gary Johnson didn't describe it very well but the Libertarian solution to global warming actually makes a lot of sense. Get the government out of oil and you'll see it used a lot less. Government owned land isn't maintained very well but if it was sold to farmers they would take care of it. A small government will fix and undo many problems.

What Gary should have said as a libertarian answer regarding global warming: The majority of man made greenhouse gasses are actually caused by animal agriculture, which is supported by government subsidies to the meat, dairy, and egg industries and for their feed crops of corn and soy. Remove the subsidies for these products and their cost, and therefore consumption, and therefore greenhouse gas emissions would fall dramatically. And the government would save billions in the process. See the documentary "cowspiracy".
