Great video and every reseller needs a testing kit ,For me the one got away for not knowing is a black opal at a thrift store for 18.00 . It burns remembering but hopefully it helps other people not making the same mistake. It was huge and what threw me off was a grind mark in the back , dont know why my brain turned it down seeing the grind mark in the back and now what i learned if it wasnt cracked minimum 50,000 . Dont remember the colors it had but never forgot that grind mark on the black surface and that was done to let light through so the color side would shine more . PAINFUL

Interesting find. Good tips. I'd love to find a bunch of those. Their value is a little surprising. In Thailand everyone wears a Buddhist medal around their neck. I came across a fellow on the street with a large wooden barrow full of medals, most of them brass with very interesting images. After I spent an hour or so picking through them (he was selling them very cheap) he told me he had some better ones that he then pulled out. They were also cheap and I bought a bunch. That's a good memory. I gave a few away but still have most of them.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise on the topic. Very familiar religious stuff to me with my traditional Catholic upbringing as well. Am afraid I've donated (yup to church sales no less) all sorts of small medals, rosaries, scapular's, and the like as my many older relatives have passed away over time. At sales now, since you've reminded us many times about these valuable pieces, I do take particular notice. Thanks again Don.

Just had time to catch up on a couple of your RU-vid videos and funny I came across this one...I just recently aquired 125 medals, pendants and pins from an auction and have had a fun time digging through all of them for the goodies...I have found around 30 of them that have the markings I'm looking for...anyways, I've been dying to see you do a video on religious items because I always have loved hunting for them and was curious of your thoughts on them...soooo thank you for reading my mind finally...lol...have a great day and can't wait to see some more of The Auction Professor!!

We need to get rid of these and my family wants to dump them. I would like to see them at least go to someone that would appreciate them. Any suggestions? This needs to be done Soon.

Don, I came across a very interesting medal. It is marked 10K and has a short (13"), very fine chain. The medal weighs 2.75g and the chain .9g. The medallion is embossed Perfect Attendance 1929 Baby Welfare, Reading, PA. The 29 is stamped into the medal. So they must have had a number of these made and just stamped the two digits of the year it was awarded as need. Any thoughts on a good starting price for this?

I am a practicing cradle Catholic, and I can tell you that you really got some finds! I have a vintage shop on Etsy, and I sell every vintage religious article that I list. Research "four-way medals"; you might have one of those with one of the first few you showed us. Just sold a four-way sterling necklace this week for good money. You really did clean up with what you got--and were wise to stay away from the newer, cheaper medals. Well done, Don!

I'm catholic & here's a good hint. If it was worn by a nun it's always worth 3 to 4x more than the metal value, because these items were prayed on by a nun or priest & they are considered blessed, simply because the religious that owned it, devoted their lives to God. Especially roserys, even if there's no precious metal. Some very old black rosary have skulls attached to them& are highly collectable, because they don't make them anymore. Cuz the meaning of the skull has changed & we stay away from those today because they usually represent the culture of death. If u have a priest bless a rosary or other metal it will also be more valuable

I hear you, but we don't do one offs these days it's just not worth our time. Time is far to valuable in this business to risk wasting it. We pretty much only buy bulk or from our pickers. We honestly do not need to be buying anything as we are totally full with back stock. We have years worth of items to list. I do like the medals though, and always have.

I searched "rosary pearls of prayer" on eBay and there's one listed for $30. Yours looks better, so you should be able to get $40. Shipping cost that I saw makes no sense (seller is charging as a padded flat rate envelope and may switch to first class at label time and profit more).
