That controller earning their paycheck on 119.35 was me! I remember that day. Great job being prepared. We can always tell when the pilots are on top of their game or when they're behind. Good work.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly Год назад
Thanks! I could tell you had your hands full with everything going on that day. FYI, normally I would have been faster in the initial descent, but in bumpy weather my default speed is slower to protect the airframe from overstressing if a sudden updraft were to be encountered. The bumps were not terrible that day, so speeding up wasn't a big issue on this flight. I appreciate what you and all your coworkers from C90 do for us pilots! - Martin

This is my first time watching your channel. There are many pilots producing IFR flight videos out there, but thanks to what is no doubt a great deal of work and obvious IFR experience, this video is better produced and more informative to watch than most. I appreciate the clarity provided by the communication captions, being able to see the various button presses in real-time, and noticing how you have your Aspens set up, with those 6 spaces providing 6 different information sets. All that, plus the iPad, the cameras, a busy airspace, weather, and planning ahead. This is the kind of video that genuinely provides useful airmanship tips for other aviators. Great job!

Your skills and professionalism in flying continue to amaze me. I can see that the approach you flew single pilot would be nearly impossible without an autopilot. That being said, your discipline is essential in using your advanced avionics and serves as an example for all GA pilots to emulate.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly Год назад
Thank you for the kind words, though I don't agree that this approach cannot be flown without autopilot. Sure, it would take a lot of concentration, but both the ENDEE6 arrival and the RNAV Z 13C approach are basically just sequences of waypoints - fly the airplane to one after the other and descend to the appropriate altitude, and you'll find the runway. Regards, Martin

Martin, I"m GREEN with envy. Expertly flying a great airplane to hear the world's greatest orchestra in one of my favorite halls. I had the great pleasure of hearing the orchestra at the very end of Reiner's reign. The programs included Strauss tone poems, Wagner overtures, Bartok, Stravinsky and all the greatest hits of the period. The brass section of that time was beyond belief. Stay safe!

Your videos are the best training aviation videos. Not only for newer pilots but also for “seasoned” pilots. The multiple shots of avionics and their use along with the autopilot and talking out loud about what you are thinking are invaluable! For me, the transition from steam gauges to GPS flat panels was recent and a steep learning curve. So much is pre-programmed that you are forced to stay well ahead of the airplane. I found out two days before the trip to KOSH this year that I would be without the Garmin autopilot due to a servo failure, so I was busier than usual at times. As you demonstrate, it can get very busy in the cockpit programming the routes when they change. Great trip out and back! Thanks for the ride-along.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly Год назад
Yes, that transition can take some time. The good news is at the end of that journey, pilots feel just as home with a digital EFIS as they used to be with round gauges. - Martin

Max forward speed, change to runway after approach already configured on final for different runway with IMC present, that runway is shorter, the IFR pilot in me wanted to say "unable!" Nice work Like that you include mistakes as well showing the human side of flying, I've forgotten the sqwak more than once myself.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly Год назад
I know what you mean, Andrew. What helped here were three things: - We were in (marginal) VMC at the time the runway change was issued - I had done this switch to the short parallel runway at Midway before several times - The Bonanza with the gear down is very easy to slow down, so you can be fast until short final and then slow quickly to a lower speed for touchdown - Martin

The portable O2 concentrator is probably a good investment since you don't need O2 that often. Pulsed doses do have their limitations, but you're a technical guy so I'm sure you understand all of this stuff. My real world IFR flying doesn't include such updated avionics at the moment unfortunately. The panel certainly makes the stress level lower and preparation level higher particularly in the terminal area. Thank you for sharing and continued safe flying.

Great video as usual, Martin! You and ATC were both dealing with pretty high workload on this one, but it was smooth and correct all the way through. Good job. To my mind, this video underscores the challenge of single-pilot IFR in busy airspace. (Having a second pilot in the right seat in Bravo airspace is never a bad thing, if you can swing it.)
@martinpauly
@martinpauly Год назад
Thanks, James. Along those lines, having a good autopilot is a close second to having a second pilot in the right seat, so that I can spend more time on planning and monitoring while the autopilot keeps the airplane pointed the right way. - Martin

Hello...finally got to watch this. I really like the Aspen lay out! I understand that the 13L/31R was recently closed and will become a taxiway....they are also going to adjust the runway numbers due to the magnetic deviations. Its always something. Hope all is well, Emil

@@martinpauly It's mostly traffic and weather inflight info. You can buy a Sentry+ for example but not all planes are required to have ADS-B out, mostly only CAT aircraft have it. You can get some more traffic with FLARM(extra subscription), but you can't get inflight weather, not even all ATS has a weather radar here, and PIREPs are not done at all. And I only ever once got the offer in advance by an AFIS tower to call a cab for me after landing at a small uncontrolled field in France, our FBOs don't offer mostly anything but fuel, often expensive fuel at that. And yeah costs are a factor too, all fields charge landings(only some in France are the exception), big fields charge a lot for landings and often mandatory handling fees like you're some rich G650 or something. Not to mention getting a plane like yours over here would cost a lot more, prices to own have really gone bananas.

Wow! That could be your finest video yet! ATC really shined, too... Just finished having both mags rebuilt and replaced with my mechanic friend. Hope to get up flying the Archer soon, weather cooperating. We're getting some high winds from the California hurricane. Actually had some damage to my plane from flying debri. I've been trying to get a hanger, but the list is very long. Rick, from Tucson

@@martinpauly Well I do have cover overhead. I have a shade port. I got a hangar a few years back when they were resurfacing KAVQ. I gave it up because it was so oppressively hot inside! I was on the west end of the hangars and the heat was extremely intense in the afternoon. Sure wish I'd kept it.....

I hope the effort to see Chicago symphony orchestra was worth it. They’ve always been my favorite, almost more than German orchestras, specially the horn players, specially from the professor Philips Farkas time. He was a serious private Navion owner and pilot and made the most well known horn teaching literature in the world. He also developed the horn himself, Holton Farkas. A heritage I hope you still can hear in the horn section.
