Excellent tutorial. I have painted for many years and found this very helpful. I hope you will continue to put new work up or offer a class. Thank you.
Thank you so much!! I'm happy to hear that it was helpful! I'm not sure if I'll do classes, but I'll definitely be putting out more videos in the future as I have time do them, both about how I paint animals and my experiences with them in nature.

You're welcome! That makes me happy to hear that it has motivated you to paint! Getting started can be one of the hardest things, but it can be so rewarding once you get going, learning things and making discoveries along the way.

Thank you so much! I'm happy to share and I'm happy that my videos have been helpful! Colour mixing can be a tough thing sometimes, but with lots of practice it will definitely get there. I hope you continue with your wildlife paintings and there will be more videos coming in the future, that I hope will also be helpful!
I so enjoyed listening to how you mixed your colors. I'd never have guessed about the purples or alizarin crimson .... She's gorgeous and that tail is lush! 🤩
Thank you!! The tail was one of my favourite parts! Yes, I usually tint the paint with something like alizarin crimson just to bring a bit more life to the colour if it feels dull. And very slight purples work well in the shadows!
@@JosephKoensgen Wow, thank you so much for your insights! When you mentioned those colors, I was a bit surprised as they aren't ones that are considered so archival and your beautiful original is likely to hang on a wall. Have you experienced these colors fading with light either direct or indirect or is the amount so small as not to be a concern? If I may ask 🤗
No problem to ask! I haven't found that my work has faded over time, or at least as much as I'm able to tell with one of my oldest paintings I have being 20 years old. I'm also using professional grade paints, and I also varnish my work with a couple layers to help protect from UV damage. And yes, some of those amounts are very small and might not be of concern. But certainly something I'll look into a bit further!
So beautiful. I like your tutorial. You explained so well how to mix colors and how to use the colors for shading. I always have problem with snow. I watched your couple of videos. Now I got how to do snow. Thanks again. Happy New Year
Wow. Amazing. How do you blank out the fox when painting the background? I don't like my strokes to stop where the fox's outline will be, so I'm curious how you make it look like you painted the fox on top of the background without rough edging around main foreground subjects.
Thank you! For this one I had cleaned up the edges with thin layers of Titanium White so that I could have a good outline. I had overlapped quite a bit into the space for the fox with all the grasses as it was too difficult to make long thin lines of grass without going into the blank space for the fox. And I'm the same, as I don't want to stop at the outline so it leaves a ridge of paint around the subject. So I do try and keep it as seamless as possible and if I need to delicately clean up the edges then I'll sometimes go back and do that, leaving just enough room for the fur or feathers to cover at the edges of the background.
I want to paint a fox face. I’m a beginner but take on difficult things. Can you tell me the names of all the colors you used so hopefully I can mix them. By the way your painting is, to me, is magnificent! Thank you
Thank you! Yes, happy to tell you the colours. I've got Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Raw Umber, Mars Black and Titanium White. And then a lot of experimentation with those colours to try and get them to where I want them.
I am using Cadmium Red, Cadmium Red light, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Mars Black and Titanium White for the fur. Then I'm just experimenting with small amounts of paint to make sure I get the right colour before I mix large amounts. A lot of my process is experimenting with colour, while also trying to match my photo reference as best I can.
