This realistic robot arm and hand was one of the coolest things we saw at the DARPA Robotics Challenge event--it's a technology that's already being field tested on patients. We chat with Michael McLoughlin, Chief Engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab to learn more about the challenges of building a modular prosthetic limb that has the same dexterity as a human hand, and its potential applications.

Goddamn guys hold your horses this is still a WIP. There are many other sensors there that we haven't mapped out or have functionality to, those being: proprioceptors and nociceptors (including thermoreceptors). Despite having motor functionality down like it ain't no thang, the sensory stuff needs some work. We still have the problem of phantom limpane, plus the person can't tell how their arm is oriented if they don't look at it. Once we have both of those sensory modalities communicating with the PNS (or CNS via microelectrode patch) then we gotta figure out how to prevent the immune response and glial scarring from occuring, otherwise the patient has to either get multiple surgeries over their lifespan or have to deal with always having a weak immune system. Once that is done the next step is figuring out portable power. It may seem simple the way this arm was presented in this video but goddamn it's a huge complicated project but major leaps were made in the field of robotic prosthetics thanks to APL's work.

So with the chip that's implanted into the brain, what would happen if said person had a seizure? Would the robotic arm also react? My understanding is that the brain itself remains fine, it can't communicate to the body, so because this thing is tapping straight into the brain, wouldn't that mean that they could still control the arm? Really interested in this.

if its humanlike, can the ringfinger be extended from a fist like the middlefinger can? or does it behave like a human hand via programming, ie. limiting its movement. if i were to have such an arm, i would not necessarily want to have an exact analog of the arm i have now. i could have anything i wanted to imagine, make a fist backwards, have a lighter in my indexfinger or all sorts of other crazy stuff... two thumbs opposing each other on each side of the hand? why create an exact replica if i may think or want something completely different potentially better?

The Leithal Gamer you couldn't have it attached to your shoulder because that would put to much stress on the joint. putting it on your stomach would be an equally bad idea because theirs no real anchoring point, don't want it ripped out do you? and if you found a good place, you would have to practice for months before you could control it because the you've never had a third arm. you would also have to have brain surgery to get the silicon receptor chip. but yea, it can probably be done... you first :)

This hope for the future for cyborg immortals. Still not on the level of my biological limbs but it is the closest I have seen to date. Lets see what 20 years of advancement can take this. We will have two drastic changes in technology, 2030 and 2060. 2030 we will have massive computation power at our finger tips. That can bring worlds to life right in front of us using AR and VR. Imagine having a AR pokemon battle or VR where you see your pokemon right in front of you and you give them commands like real pokemon battles. By 2060 we should have achieved complex cybernetic upgrades to humans including eyes, arms, legs, skeletal, heart, lungs etc. we will be in a ghost in a shell type world by 2060 at least the tech will exist not that everyone will have it. And our brains will be highly augmented by between 2030 - 2060
