In ace you can use a ballistic computer and sync it with your kestrel and nite rangefinder, then when you input your round it should give you the ballistic solution

It's more art than science in terms of reading wind, which does change that quickly IRL. 9-Hole Reviews has several videos which demonstrate it happening over the course of fire. The range card is easy to pick up, but it's drawback is that it isn't exacting for the weather conditions the shooter is in. What feels like cheating though is using the Vector 21, the Kestrel, the MicroDAGR, and the ATragMX all in conjunction with each other, and bringing all of that data together to dial in the scope and take a single shot. Seeing it work makes you want to gnaw on a stogie and say "I LOVE IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER!". After a lot of practice and failure though, you start to call wind, make range estimates, and drop calculations in your head on the fly. Sometimes you don't even touch the scope turrets and just use kentucky windage with a cold bore shot. Those times are fucking phenomenal. Then...you start to translate that over to scopes like the ACOG or SpecterDR and start impressing people.

@@MarkiusFox With the ever-changing environment, Is it normal for RL sniper/marksman to miss the first few shots? If so, wouldn't you just give away your own position? And what If your mission is to eliminate a high-value target, and you probably only have one shot to kill the target?

You can edit the wind sensativity in the settings. In general though, sitting on a hill top on an Island nation will yeild fast changing directions like this. Wind flows like water as well so dependent on where you are geographically will depend on how the wind "flows". Speed is obviously derived from other factors. In real life you can see fast changes through mirage which is more important than wind at the shooter position. Generally it is better to disregard wind reads in target rich environments and to just go based off mirage, bullet impact, or perceived wind.

Maybe for a game but in real life that is an amazing reticle. It just takes some practice to learn it. In real life it allows you to quickly get on target without messing with your come ups.

@@will9357 Have they been to a military sniper school? Or have any other legit long range marksmanship training? Most people that don't like reticles like that haven't had enough real world experience.

BIS says that ARMA 4 is coming, but basically they're going to be building from the ground up, engine and everything. For all it's quirks and bugs, I love the ARMA series, more sense of accomplishment than any of the mainstay first person shooters like CoD or Battlefield. Not forgetting to mention how welcoming BIS is to modding their game, and the novel anti-pirating measures they took with the games.

I would say it depends on what the player like. For snipers and aircrafts, I prefer realism/simulation because if it's too arcady it can be dull very quickly (especially aircraft BVR/Dogfight).

It's more fun than worrying about kiddos standing on top of a tower and sniping you from 2500 meters. The problem with most "realistic" military shooters is that every character is sniper elite. Suppresion is not a thing when everybody has neurosurgeon hands, hawk eyes, and shoots laser guns. Then they add effects to the game that turn your character into a crying old man with Parkinson's when a bullet flys within 40 meters of you-- because "realism". Project Reality did a good job simulating inherent inaccuracy which in turn encouraged suppression and team work. ACE does it better. Cant think of any other game that has realistic enough gunplay and ballistics that they dont have to cruch players with shitty effects whenever the player gets shot at.

I definitely agree with Vercingetorix. It's much better than constantly getting sniped by an 8 year old from across the map. Long range shooting requires a fair amount of knowledge in real life, that's why the entire army isn't filled with snipers. If you do happen to understand even a little about long range shooting then simply putting the crosshair on the guy on the other side of the map is pretty damned boring.

Side note, where around here can we shoot further than 200 yards?

You do have to deal with spin drift and the Coriolis effect and the Eötvös effect with ACE. You typically use the ATragMX, which is also included in ACE to calculate your shots for long range stuff.

Wind down range, spin drift, and coriolis effect are all features of ACE ballistics. Unfortunately, it's harder to read the wind down range in ACE since you can't read it from mirage in your scope. However, I do seem to recall that it is possible to read the wind from flags downrange.
