My fondest memory of the Philippines was staying in the squatter area with my wife, many years ago. I would get up in the mornings to have coffee and pandesal, and sit outside to enjoy the neighborhood. There was an old woman of about 80 years, who claimed to be a retired English teacher (her English was perfect). When she found out I was in the neighborhood, she would walk by the house and visit so she could talk with a native English speaker. She never asked for anything, and just wanted to talk. Very nice old lady.

I will say that even squatter neighborhoods have a sense of community that is absent here in the U.S. If I walked through the neighborhood, people were constantly stopping me to sit at their little shack and have coffee or even just Skyflakes crackers. Just to be friendly or to talk with a foreigner. I never got bothered or asked for anything.@@RogerIsmiVlogs

Really depends on the family. You need to put as much effort into getting to know the family as you do to getting to know your filipina. If the family is not toxic, it is actually an act of cruelty to remove your filipina from all that she knows by way of support systems - both financially and emotionally in the past. You come in to this system, and to try to make an island of European or American culture within this becomes an insult - in fact you become the same in the Philippines as the type of immigrant that is disliked in English speaking countries. There's no escaping the fact that marrying a filipina means marrying her family too. And, as was stated in the video, if you found a good filipina she will guide you away from toxic situations, including toxicity from the family. As for me, I am so glad to be near my filipina's family. They have helped me adapt to the culture. The immediate family have protected me from more distant relatives who have wanted to take advantage. They gave me their word from the beginning that they would never take advantage of me being a foreigner and they have been true to their word. In fact the worst was my filipina! She knew the promises her family had made and she knew I had told her I am not rich and don't have much money so she said once in exasperation, "Why you come here with no money?" Well, I told her straight, that if she was with me only because she thought she would be rich, then I need to find someone else. Well, that was the one and only time she threw up a red flag, and she has been trying to erase that from both our memories ever since. lol. She has done lots to show me that she loves me for me, and not because of money. Yeah, she's not a child bride either. I wanted a mature woman because I looked for a wife, not another daughter.

I've never been to the Philippines but I have been to other third world countries and it really seems that if you're not willing to allow yourself to be exploited prepare yourself for some discomfort in these third-world countries and get ready to have a hard face and deaf ears get ready for when the sweetest looks turn into the nastiest of faces from friends and family of your significant other but put on a hard face and only worry about what your lady thinks of you and nobody else

My Filipina Fiancée tells Me about these things all the time. She still works and has the other Ladies asking her why is She still working. I give Her a Nice Allowance once a month. Also people keep asking Her to lend them money. I told Her to do whatever She wants to do with this situation But I did warn Her that most people Never pay you the money back. The same here in the USA. Take care.

It really depends on the family. My wife and I have been together for 30 years now. Her parents never asked for much of anything, and we helped them because we wanted to. My wife is an only child, so there isn't a large family to put financial pressure on us. Part of learning to respect money is that my wife worked in the U.S. and knew how hard it was to earn and save money. On the other hand, I've known a lot of U.S. citizens who married Filipinas who did have big family commitments or had zero respect for how hard it is to earn money and how expensive it is to live outside the Philippines. That situation was a constant source of family and financial stress. As for chismosa Filipinos, that is a problem here among the Filipino community in the U.S. We figured out many years ago to cut those kinds of people out of our lives.

The key take away of this video…for me…was in the title…Face Together. That is where it all starts and ends. Open and honest communication is how problems are properly identified and proper solutions are formulated and carried through, and it is through this that couples can grow together. And, just as importantly, it is in a lack of this that couples grow apart.

They had nothing else than tea to offer, may hide the food for me but offer to show me around with their car and that ended at a supermarket😁 I did play with and paid for all the food we did buy, they really did show a big red flag, but it was a good experience to see how people can be.

@RCFSULAW

It is quite simple. Set boundaries with your Filipina in all aspects of your relationship where you both agree. If she is getting pressure from her family and she can't handle it then support her by her side. If her family is viewing you as an ATM and you are providing funds already then cut them off the next month. They will ask her what happened and she can tell them her foreigner boyfriend, partner or husband does not like the way the family is talking about her and him and they don't deserve any support. You are right. My money and my assets were hard earned busting my butt. By no means will I be providing except what me and my partner decide. That requires never telling your Filipina the monthly amount of your retirement income and savings and just transfer an amount of monthly funds that are necessary for your needs so she can honestly say there is no extra money for whatever is being requested as the account she sees is very small. I also agree learn Tagalog or the important parts of the local dialect. Especially learn the insulting phrases. If you hear them when you are around her family it will be referring to you. At the same time learn general phrases when you interact with random Filipinos. But never let her family know the extent of your local language capabilities. Magandang araw.

My wife and I JUST EXPERIENCED the TOXIC relatives and had to put them in their place! We did everything by the book ( legal ) and fled the PI temporarily so as to protect ourselves from false accusations. I am a former law enforcement Deputy from California ( a real cop ) and also a former asset with the US DOD. I've gone up against odds that you could only imagine from a USA movie. My wife is a immigrant some 36 yrs. ago and her siblings never cared about her until they found out we're retiring to the PI. Unfortunately they are the total opposite of what foreigners are told to expect. These relatives came from beneath a rock! I and my wife introduced ourselves to all authorities in our barangay as well as the Chief of Pulis and the Mayor. They know our backgrounds and history. They have made us feel welcome. Currently there is a Felony Tresspass Order against certain members of the family as well as a Formal Restraining Order. If they violate either order I've been reassured that I'll be within my rights to neutralize or dispose of them in a manner acceptable to the authorities. Natural citizens vs foreigner is condoned.

I'm one of those lucky people who has a great family on my wife's side. My wife doesn't ask for anything and if she wants some money for an emergency or something that she wants she will pay me back. She just wants what belongs to her and she wanted to have separate bank accounts. My wife's side of the family have proven many times that they will do most anything for me without expecting anything in return I have done things to help them but they are never asking for anything or expecting anything from me. We just celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary. I don't mind helping them with gas money or other things like if we go out to eat. Other than that they are using their own money for their needs. Her side of the family doesn't look at me any different than their own family. I think that some people rush into a relationship without really getting to know the other person. I talked to my current wife for at least three years before we met. Then when we met for the first time she had her sister and her sister's husband with her. I guess that I could have been in a bad situation but I didn't have any uncomfortable feelings. Life can be great with a Filipina as long as you use the head on your shoulders.

Greetings Roger and Ismi! In defense of Filipinos both being with a Filipina currently and previously married to one as well, some of the attitudes are the result.of.decades of media and chissmis perpetrating the idea that all Westerners are rich. Though we Westerners basically won the lottery in being born here, of course, the Filipino preconceived notions are just fantasy and the best way to deal with their attitudes is just to sit down and be honest with them. I'll also say that any foreigner blessed to have the love of a Filipina, should realize he does have some obligations to the family both for his Filipina and to truly become part of the family...not because of the money but because of the love and care.

Great discussion guys, thank you. We all need to hear this. Fellow Xpats, we really need to take this onboard and pay attention to whats happening between our wife and extended family. Do not let her become isolated _ communicate and be there for her. With extended family, help when you can but don't be an ATM and listen to your wife. Set boundaries with family early and do what you can to protect your wife from toxic relatives and harassment. It is our job to step up, learn to say no and be the wall they run into. Don't leave that all on her. Many here have heard a thing called the 'Two Island Rule' ... if you haven't it's living two islands away from her family so they are not in your daily business. Many think this is the recipe for a peaceful life and for lots of folks it is. There is definitely an advantage to this strategy and if your GF or Wife asks for that, listen to her and move. It is our job to step up and do what is necessary to protect our wife and family.

I’ve had 2 relationships with Filipina I met on Facebook. I visited them both in pinas. It is very obvious to me that they have a very exaggerated idea about how much money Americans have . You can explain till your blue in the face that you are just a worker on vacation on workers wages . They still think you rich . You can tell them I have zero balance they reply ok just 10,000p ok ? What part of zero was confusing. I do understand that they are receiving text and calls to ask them to ask you for MONEY ! It gets very disturbing so I have to end it. It became daily . Even if you were helping regularly the request me for more never stop . If I could teach Filipino one thing it is that they have a very unrealistic idea of the financial ability of an average American .

I visited my fiancée in the Philippines and stayed with her and her family. They were all so welcoming. My Filipina parter was very protective of me. I noticed a few times where they would invite me on a family trip like to the beach or out to dinner. I have no problem paying my share. Some family members would say we are doing this in your honor. After the trip or outing we would get a knock on the door and my partner will leave the room. She would come back later and say your share is 8000 php. Doing the math I knew it wasn't just my share it was half of total expenses. I wish someone would have ask me before the trip not wait until after. It was by no means a big issue or anything I was just left confused because of the lack of communication. My fiancée and I had a talk about it and your video says it better than she did. While most of her family was not like that there were people coming that my fiancée didn't even know and me and her together had to pay for in the end. I was so confused at the time because there were so many people coming in and out of the house because they hear there is an American there. Some are nice some are just coming for the money. And like you said in your video sometimes your Filipina won't say anything about it in fear of causing drama

I really appreciate how unselfish you two are as a filipino couple because you are showing us what to look out for in your own culture in spite of the fact that you are both Filipinos. In Puerto Rico in the country side I had experienced very similar circumstances when I lived there. Many family members would initially be kind and supportive when we first moved there. Once my father stopped giving money away, many of them stopped visiting us on holidays. I never even met many family members until there was a funeral in the family. Jealousy exists everywhere. What filipino families need to understand is that most expats who move there did so for a reason. Cost of living in the U.S. is super expensive and many expats can no longer handle the high costs of living there. For that reason they are moving to other countries just to survive. So yes many can be generous but to a limit. They still need to purchase a home, a car, food, utilities, etc and take care of their filipina wife. In most American's eyes the filipina wife's family is only a secondary priority.

This subject needs addressed for the benefit of many married couples who are subjected to these common 'reactions' from family members ! -- However - I have found - in my 7 decades of experience with humans - that - "those convinced against their will - are of the same opinion still" ! -- A harsh reality. Hello, Very interesting video. Thank you. What is the best solution ? A sort of legend says: "Always put 2 islands apart between where you stay and your girlfriend's family." Easy to say, but you have to find a woman who is willing to live two islands apart. Another solution could be to talk to her about it and try to trust her. That said, she can protect me, but that won't take away the pressure she may face from close and/or distant family. Every situation is different and you have to manage your own situation, with your girlfriend/wife and her family.

This was a great video and topic! I have to add a perspective that maybe you don’t know. In the West we are brought up to believe that to beg or even to expect to be given things is a terrible “character flaw” (as if your parents did not raise you right). So yes, it puts pressure on you and your Filipina to have relatives and friends w the leech mentality, but it is a very striking message to the foreigner that these are not good people. With that said, yes-foreigners recognize the obligation to take care of elderly parents but really their feeling obligation ends there. I personally don’t believe in pampering my own children and much less aunts, uncles and cousins-not because I don’t love them, but it would ruin our respect for them to think they felt they were owed something.

I sent a cheap iPad ($300 usd) with my girlfriend who went for a visit earlier this year for one of her cousins. I sent it to him because my girlfriend and her family ask him to do a lot of things since he’s in the Philippines. It could be paperwork, picking up money and paying for something, taking care of their properties, etc… They might give him $500 or $1000 pesos for his time, which is good money for simple tasks, but I just wanted to thank him with something nice because he’s honest and doesn’t complain. Apparently that didn’t go over too well with some of the other extended family (as in, where is mine). I don’t really care if they felt slighted because they didn’t do the work. Also my girlfriend really brings lots of “pasalubongs” for everyone when she visits. Probably more than she should. it's not just when you are dating a Filipina that they expect you to have money/dollars in your pocket....it's people around you...relatives...neighbors....that knows you are from abroad and they expect you to give them money or that you would lend them money (without repaying you if course) expecting that you are just catching dollar rain from whatever country you are vacationing from. Not all Filipina dating a foreigner is just after their money. I am married to my American husband for 30 years now and when we first met I know he was not rich. In fact when I first arrived here in the USA we used my money to lived off of until the next few paydays. it's not just the FILIPINA girls that you think would like to take advantage of a foreigner...it's people around. So Filipino kababayans...behaved.

so in a nutshell, IF you marry a filipina you met online or some bar in the philippines, more than likely she's a single mother with at least 2 kids from a previous relationship and then you're automatically financially responsible for her and her kids and her entire clan from both sides of her family. simply put, don't be a chump and money up lol. and that's if you're stupid enough to even consider the idea. Ive done that same mistake in the past so you won't have to. solution: NEVER commit to anything! she's a bait. do a background research regarding her upbringing, her and her family's background. if she's from a province with a very large immediate family whose dependent on her, RUN!!! run as fast and as far as you can. once she bleeds you dry financially, there's 2-3 other foreigner simps waiting in line on her roster.

Beware a Filipina who justifies asking your “help” under the idea that “it’s not for me, its to help others. I had to boot my ex-fiancée because “money flows through her fingers like water” as she often said, when friends or family had a “needy cause.” Hell, everyone has a needy cause in the Philippines. I thought I could keep her reigned in by limiting her budget, but she was a lightning rod for everyone who thought she was connected. She was weak and it made her anxious and depressed.

Some might say that gossip is the national language of the Philippines and not Tagalog. I’m a 1/2 Filipino born and raised in the USA. If there is a party and you’re not there, guess who they’re all talking about? It’s you and the conversation probably isn’t flattering. Not all the time, but it happens a lot. If you call them out for bad mouthing their “friend” it’s you who becomes the bad guy. Fortunately, my Filipina girlfriend (also in the U.S) doesn’t participate in stuff like that.

Yes, I have Definitely not a very jealous (controlling) woman, nor a so-called city girl (doll) and a materialistic woman (giving money, loving love only through money). I'm tired of girls like this and will quickly delete them. I'm looking for someone with heart and soul from the province. And whatever my balance is, the joint balance is low because I assume he is unemployed or underpaid. Jealous husband is over when he wants my phone. How do you look around the city, girl? Too much makeup and clothing, dyed hair, etc. while she speaks. What pronunciation does he have? I'm looking for someone with heart and soul from the province.

Wow guys, you were so spot on with so many things. I've experienced many of the different things. The rich Afam thing is so annoying and hurtful. And financially your country has so much corruption and that the price of something, or what you can have, depends on who you are. For three years ive had no spare money as whatever i can budget to spare i have sent to the Philippines. Our cost of living can easily be 10 times or more compared to there, and not to mention the flights to get there. Lucky im in Australia and the distance is shorter, and our wage is higher than US, but compared to USD that is a monster in conversion, but we pay for all the privileges that our US cousins don't have....

Foreigners think that the Philippines is the safest country in the world because they themselves don't speak their local language and live in a bubble. Filipinos are always talking about this person who got murdered or this woman who got R'ed, or that house that got broken into, etc. etc. Millions of krymes are committed in the Philippines everyday between Filipinos and against Afams that never make it to the Philstar. Listen, when it comes to Filipinas you have to educate them to understand the world, how the world works. Doesn't matter how many degrees she has or how many top colleges she has attended to, she will always cook with sticks, so to speak. Listen to me and listen to me well. There is not two cents of a difference between a mass murderer who is locked away in prison, or an incarcerated petty thief, and a Filipina lawyer, or a Filipina physician, when it comes to understanding the world. Have you seen movies about "Robinson Crusoe" and how he educated "Friday". That's exactly what you have to do with your Filipina unless you want to find yourself one day in some shallow grave. Logic and rationality be damned in this country. Nothing in this country is rational. Top educated lawmakers pass laws still in 2023 that violate the most basic of human rights in the rest of the world. I'm your only hope. Don't argue with me and listen well! Lawler
