// About Ford F150 Lightning
The Ford F-150 Lightning is a battery electric full-size light duty truck unveiled by Ford in May 2021 as part of the fourteenth generation Ford F-Series. Four models have been announced, and all models initially will be dual-motor, four-wheel-drive, with EPA range estimates of 230-300 mi (370-480 km). The base price of the commercial-grade version all-wheel drive (AWD) truck in the United States was announced to be US$39,974, with higher-power/trim/range models priced all the way up to US$90,000.[5] The F-150 Lightning began production on 26 April 2022.[6]
In January 2019, Ford announced the intention to produce a fully-electric light pickup at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show.[7]
In July 2019, Ford tested prototype electric test mules on existing F-150 chassis. This culminated in a record-setting demonstration test tow of 1,250,000 pounds (570,000 kg) on rails.[8] Chief engineer for the F-150, Linda Zhang, emphasized at the time that Ford intended to take the "built Ford tough [characteristics of] durability, capability, and productivity and [extend that into] a whole new arena" of electric trucks.[8]
Ford unveiled the truck, and released the model name on 19 May 2021,[9] with production planned for spring of 2022.[5][10] Ford received 69,500 refundable-deposit orders in the first four days after the announcement.[11]
The base configuration has 452 hp (337 kW), 230 mi (370 km) range, and its smaller battery supports a 2,000 lb (910 kg) payload. The high-end configuration has 580 hp (430 kW), 300 mi (480 km) EPA range, 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) times in the mid-four-second range, and a towing capacity of 10,000 lb (4,500 kg). All models have 775 lb⋅ft (1,051 N⋅m) of torque, full-time 4wd, independent rear suspension, and will initially come in a crew-cab configuration only, with a 5.5 ft (1.7 m) bed.[5] The active suspension provides real-time load weighing function. Like Tesla, the Ford F-150 Lightning is announced to include over-the-air software updates, and a significant software driving aids which will allow limited hands-off highway driving, but fall short of full self-driving.[5] The F-150 Lightning in some trim packages, in concert with the "80A Ford Charge Station pro with Ford Intelligent Backup Power capability," can provide household-oriented V2G power, which can meet the electrical needs of a typical American home for three to ten days.[19] The truck can also supply up to 9.6 kW of power through up to eleven 120V and 240V electrical outlets distributed around the truck.[19]
This electric truck has a standard battery and can travel 230 mi (370 km) on a single charge. EPA range estimates of 230-300 mi (370-480 km)[5] produced by Ford in May 2021 were based on 1,000 lb (450 kg) of cargo carried in the truck. Electrek reported that the range with no load, just a driver and the truck, appeared to be closer to 400 mi (640 km).[20]

The efficiency of the vehicle and the size of the battery make for an interesting comparison for EVs. Tesla pretty much leads the way. It will be very interesting to see the range and efficiency of the Cybertruck. If it's really good, they Tesla will really benefit. Tesla surprised us with Semi efficiency so we will see with the Cybertruck.

Ford dealership worst experience of my life. (4-22-2023) Pure torture. AND a markup of $10.000 over MSRP. Next day took a Rivian test derive and best experience ever. No pressure, and the Rivian guy was able to answer EVERY questions I had. At the Ford dealership dealt with 5 Ford sales team member and between all 5 they argued over every answer they provided. And when I looked on the Ford web site found out they were all wrong.

Hey, you didn't show us the back seat! The 2nd row is the only reason I want to buy a full sized truck vs. mid or compact. It needs to have enough space behind the front seats to comfortably keep a cooler there full time. I am in Texas & Sun & heat are intense here. A Van doesn't give me the utility I need from a bed.

Only chance ford has to stay alive is grab a slice of the EV market and the pickup is their best shot. I like the Mach-e too but Ford is best known for their trucks. Its going to be interesting to see how the next few years playout. All i know is whoever can make an AFFORDABLE pickup with more range than we have today, and that doesn't completely drain the battery when towing will make a killing. The problem is nobody has the means of production or supply yet to produce enough at a scale that makes it both profitable for them and affordable for the consumer. Almost there though.

I feel like if this was a Tesla on the Tesla charging network I would buy one. I’ve heard of way too many issues with the non Tesla charge networks. Now that Tesla is opening their charge network that may make this a good option. Not sure on charge times either. That may be the other issue. We are in the market for an F250 right now which is in the same price range. I don’t need the tow capacity really. We have a tundra right now that tows everything we have. Boat, and soon to be travel trailer. It is close to the max of the tundra though. This to me is not a big deal for EVs but for a gas vehicle I’d rather it not be sitting at the max so that’s why we look at the F250. It’s also the reason the EV trucks could work for us but I have too many issues with them still. I really feel like I’d have to keep the tundra for a very small amount of trips. For example if we wanted to take the boat to the mountains that’s about 400miles away. The EV truck would be annoying to use. Same thing with if we wanted to head to the mountains and do some camping with the travel trailer. This just doesn’t work. It’s too much of a hassle. I really want EV to work but it’s just not there yet, for us at least.

I'm excited for an electric truck but I can't buy until range goes up. These sub 300 mile ranges limit 2/3rds of the country. I live with cold winters and tow my travel trailer throughout the Summer. When not towing our interstate speed limits are 80 mph, 85 practically. Sure it's enough for commuting and grocery stores but my trips every other weekend will suffer.

Ford Motor Company has recently lost a lawsuit from a vendor that they had doing their software until about 2014. Apparently Ford dropped them claiming they had their own software, but it turns out they basically copied from the vendor they dropped. Ford's general above average recall levels keeps me away from by of their products. It will be interesting to see if GM and Tesla EV trucks truly hit the market next year. Ford ramping up fast now is smart. When ever GM and Tesla get their EV trucks to market, it will take them at least a year to truly ramp up. Happy to see another EV on the market. Especially an EV that seems to useful. Not just an ego machine like the Hummer EV.

I was thinking of the Ford Lightning as a future vehicle, but the price seems to be increasing every 3 months. Also, I’m not sold on EV batteries that are raising environment havoc with the mining of and processing of battery materials and the fact that most batteries are coming from China. A recent video indicated that one has to drive at least 60K miles just to break even with net zero on CO2 emissions on EV’s . Plus, I don’t believe the hype being pushed about CO2 being a culprit when it is only 0.04% of the earth’s atmosphere. The climate change models cannot reproduce past history regarding planet temperatures. How can one have any confidence that these models can predict the future. EV technology sound wonderful, but I don’t want to have to pay $10K to $15K more for a vehicle with lots of bonus features that I don’t need. Most new EV sedans are now smaller than their ICE predecessors. Perhaps if car manufacturers produced ICE vehicles with lower friction losses, mpg would greatly improve. There needs to be a big reduction in battery weight (higher energy capacity) and fasting charging cycles to make them as convenient as ICE vehicles.
