All their KMarts I’ve been to smell...its like a cross between dingy and dirty, with some musty-ness mixed in there; and, at the very end of the smell there’s tiny hints of cleaning products. I thought it would be easy to describe but i was wrong. Btw since this comment is a year old - did you ever find one to go in and smell?
I used to shop at this Kmart a ton! There's a main entrance inside Penn Station, so I would do my shopping while waiting for a train to come!!! It's incredible how booming this Kmart is!!!
In Australia we love our Kmart stores. Kmart here is the no 1 store to go to and always look nice. Kmart is so popular here that when new stock comes out it sells out fast and you have to wait like a month to get that item in again.
Kmart US, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Czech Republic and Slovakia used to all be owned by Kresge/Kmart Corporation, or as a joint venture with the Kmart Corporation and another company. Here's what happened: Kmart US was established in 1962, they filed for chapter 11 in 2002 and purchased Sears in 2005. They are currently dying as of January 2018. Kmart Canada was also established in the 1960s, they went bankrupt in 1998, the stores were sold to Zellers soon after. Only two Zellers stores remain, and serve as liquidation centers for other Hudson Bay retailers. The rest of the Zellers stores closed after after a botched attempt to bring Target to Canada. Kmart purchased the MAJ department stores chain in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in the early 1990s. The troubles of their US operations would soon catch up to those stores, which Kmart would turn around and sell to Tesco. Kmart would join forces with Mexican department store chain Liverpool to launch Super Kmart in Mexico in the late 1990s. The stores didn't do very well and were sold to Mega Hypermakets which were owned by Commercial Mexicana, a Mexican supermarket chain. Kmart Australia began as a joint venture between S.S. Kresge Co. of the US and G.J. Coles & Co. of Australia in 1969. In 1994, Coles-Myer bought back all shares Kresge/Kmart Corp. held in Kmart Australia. Since then, Coles-Myer had exclusive rights to the Kmart brand in Australia and New Zealand. Coles-Myer later sold some of their retail assets to Wesfarmers Ltd. including the Australian versions of Kmart and Target. Kmart Australia is still doing well as of January 2018.

Danny M, I agree. There's no way Kmart could be popular in another country if it's run by the same people in charge of the North American stores. Every Kmart in my city up to a 50 miles radius has closed.
I was in a Kmart over the weekend an d saw Ziploc bags on clearance. Originally $10.49 marked down to $9.49. IMHO, this is exactly why Kmart is going down the crapper!
Please don't go live anymore. The quality is just too bad. I am not blaming you at all for this. I just would rather watch it taped and clear than live and not be able to see anything. Thanks! If Kmart had stores like this all over the country no one would be talking about them having to close stores and go bankrupt.
i agree but livestreams are convenient for like, when they stumble upon something cool and wanna quickly show it. im sure uploading a 15 minute stream isn’t hindering from any other project as well so this is a cool little “bts” type of thing
I've been to this K-mart before, back when I was staying across the street at the Hotel Pennsylvania during a collegiate broadcast conference that was going on. That was 2007-2008.
I live in the NYC metro area and most of the kmarts here stay in bussness due to the lack of wal marts around here. Most kmarts that are still open in nyc are huge and well stocked. There is another 2 level one in the bronx that was once a caldor. still even has the caldor design to it minus a paint job. Westchester county still had a few all former caldors.
Ah, so you did go to the Kmart attached to Penn Station! I went to that Kmart once, and by far that location seemed like the nicest Kmart I'd ever visited. I wish more Kmarts were like this one, myself. I think per online reports there was a multistory Kmart(forget if it was 2 or 3 floors, I never visited that one) at Gallery at Market East in Philadelphia, but it unfortunately closed down. Good to see this one is still open and doing well, since it puts the remaining ones in the Chicago area to shame. BTW for those who don't know, that Kmart was a Woolworth location till sometime in the 1990s. Sometime during that decade, Kmart opened there.
The one thing you can say about this vid, is that it actually reveals a hidden gem if you’re staying in NYC, and need to shop for a few very basic things, yknow? If your kids just need jeans, you decide you need a toaster, you didn’t pack your iron/blow dryer, etc, you blew out your best walking shoes and need a pair of cheapees, or you need some cheap snacks for the hotel. Shopping anywhere else in NYC is so expensive, and you know the hotel would send you to the nearest Williams~Sonoma for a toaster and some epicurean patisserie nearby for food when all you wanted was some Doritos and some PopTarts. Great find for tourists!
This store probably grosses more than any in the chain, but the costs just being in Manhattan alone have got to be astronomical with insanely high rent.
Woooowwww,,,,I lived on 30th Str. between 7th and 8th in NYC for over 20 yrs. and used to go there all the time and and now I realize how much i took it for granted....I never saw it from this perspective!
Also, shame that the financial woes claimed this location 2 years ago now. So this video now serves as a documentary archiving the uniqueness that sat at Penn Station for 24 years.
I went here this past summer! My daughter was dancing at Joffrey ballet. I accidentally found it while walking around NYC. I thoughr it was tge most interesting Kmart I had ever been to! I ended up in the subway station.
Dan, my parents & I used to go to Woolworths off of Perring Pkwy years ago. Naturally when my mom & I were in Manhattan we'd stop by their Woolworths- it was nothing like we had ever seen, huge!
Been to this Kmart before. It's attached to Penn Station. There's another one closer to downtown. Layout is typical of NYC department stores but instead of the floors going up the floors go down. I'm guessing the reason why all the signage is updated and the salesfloor fully-stocked is because its a flagship store.

That's the Kmart you can get to from Penn Station right? It's been there as long as I can remember. I was in it recently as well and was amazed it was still going strong. Probably one of the last Kmarts still getting a bunch of traffic. I can't image what the rent is for them.
This is one of the very few Kmarts that where renovated before Kmart filed for bankruptcy in 2001. If Kmart would have renovated all there Kmarts to look like this one they wouldn't be in such a crappy mess right now.
I'm also so Surprised this Kmart is still open just like other people's comments I used to go in there and Look at thier Electronic's before Going out to Long Island.
My KMart is doing this liquidation sale thing. There are 2 huge dumpsters with broken shelving out back and shelving trash all over. It's like they are going out of business without saying that they are going out of business.
We still have a Big Kmart here in Rotterdam, NY in the Capital region. It looks like that one. That is super big though. Here in Upstate, they still do layaways and smells great. Nice clothes, btw.
Can't believe this K-Mart is still thriving and not close to closing. Nor could I believe it when it first opened in Midtown Manhattan, across the street from Macy's! Who thinks of shopping at K-Mart at a NYC shopping spree? I will say that since it's adjacent to Penn Station, commuters could get snacks here at reasonable prices, instead of at the overpriced newsstands.
the other KMart Manhattan is at offical address 770 Broadway on 8th St-Lafayette. just where the East Village starts. And some from that neighborhood hated and drove out a 7 Eleven a block further east on St. Mark's Place.
They closed it a few years ago. It was a actually profitable and Sears corporation wanted it to stay open but the owner of the property wanted to upscale. I used to work at another Kmart with some co-workers who used to work at the location your talking about 😂

There is this app for Kmart and Sears stuff called ShopYourWay. You can get free stuff vouchers to Kmart for really nice items and deep discount also. Idk it's a fun app if you have a Kmart or Sears nearby. I dont. They closed all the Kmart near me.
That place is incredible! I have to wonder if the company is planning to keep that one and a small handful of others operating with full staff and decent stock. Thanks for filming it.
Wow what a K-Mart. We had three now two. Out of the two one is old from the 70's look. I can remember it as a kid in the 70's and it did not change. It does have a smell to it.
That's actually rare. I live in Manhattan and this is one of Two K-Marts. They are in Prime locations and there is usually a Long line at both Check-out locations. There are on very small "Select" Target stores in Manhattan proper. The big Targets are up town in Harlem or in Brooklyn/Queens. You can get there by Subway but with no big Targert Stores in Midtown, and no Way-Marts, the two K-Marts are the closest thing NYC has to this type of department store. The prices for Manhattan are very good and so it stays in business based on selling basic items. Both stores get VERY busy. It defies logic but these two K-Marts are probably keeping the rest of Sears and K-Marts in business. The two we have Weill be the last ones open I'm afraid and yet they will be missed in NYC. I"m hoping if they do close, that Target will move in. There's one on 34th but it's a select store or Mini store if you will. Not the size or volume of this K-Mart.
Well, lah-di-dah! I'll just bet you anything that THIS K-Mart won't close its doors soon! (Since the subway/train ventures out to Long Island, I'm willing to bet that these K-Mart patrons range from the upper-middle-class to the lower-upper-class (if there is such a designation.) Even though the clothing down in the basement was "reasonably priced," it was coordinated, fairly tasteful, and would probably appeal to a "yupwardly mobile" kid (or young man) on a budget. (Since we didn't get to see the clothing on the second floor, did they have designer knock-offs up there? I wish that you two had spent a few minutes more to go up there and see.) In the small town in which I now reside, far away from my native East Coast, the last K-Mart gasped its final breath, and let out a death rattle sometime last year. (I believe they originally had 5 stores here.) And yes, the local K-Mart DID have a distinctive odor, reminiscent of a carnival or a circus: a combined greasy hotdog/burnt popcorn smell. (Starting in the spring, add the saccharine reek of warm cotton candy that smelled like bubble gum. They did have booths where you could get a strip of photos for, I believe, about 50 cents; the only things they lacked were fortune tellers, rigged games, and malodorous animal poop, but the ambiance was pretty much the same; fairly noisy and confused...) Query: Will that K-Mart in Manhattan survive the economic downturn for the same reason that that lavish shopping mall in Florida is going great guns - because both cater to patrons with more money and higher aspirations? Are the middle- and working-classes losing THEIR malls because "they don't shoot high enough" in life? Will "classism" become the line of demarcation between those who have malls, and those who don't? And - will people wanting to enter the "sacred precincts" of the "yupscale" establishments have to pass muster before an individual who determines their "acceptability" predicated upon, say, the designers of their shoes and purses (if women), or if men, whether or not their suits and shoes are bespoke (that is, bench-made (shoes) or tailored to order (suit)? I'd love to see more of these places (typical and atypical) that cater to people whose only criteria of desirability are financial wealth, a superficial attractiveness, and celebrity (or notoriety) - never mind breeding, graciousness, ethics, morality, modesty - all the intangibles that go into making a person of character. (It's a pity to see our society stratifying - and for some of the worst possible reasons...)
