It's good to conduct a test for the egghead skeptics. But I would like to add that the level of difference that an amplifier makes is much less subtle than it appeared in this test. The test does a great job proving that there is a difference though! I have the RNHP in my small project studio and it drives everything much better than any built in amplifiers. More power means better control of the drivers which gives you more dynamic bass impact and a cleaner sound. The interaction between the load of the headphones and the amp is where a lot of that difference comes from, something that a line out test can't show. The amplifier also makes everything smoother, more natural sounding, with a lot more detail. The RNHP is perfect aside from two issues: 1. It's expensive. 2. There is a startup and shutdown sequence that you must follow to avoid pops. Power on, let it warm up, then plug in headphones. Unplug headphones, then power off. That's an important thing to mention in a review of the RNHP.

A quality, transparent amplifier is generally not cheap, so that can't be helped, but the Neve is arguably fairly overkill for all the people relying on HD280pros and ATH-M30s and such, a far cry from the resolution of HD650, which Bill has.

I like the Neve a lot but the only thing i do not like is the very loud thump noise when you turn it on and off

any geeks know the answer to this> ? > When audio is uploaded to RU-vid, what does youTube do it as far as compresses what one hears? If I upload a video of WAV audio will it play back as WAV or compress it?? I suspect we are not hearing the quality that CoO uploaded- though the Neve seemed more spacious and defined on my good headphones.
@deanwolfechannel
@deanwolfechannel Год назад
chat gbt says: When you upload a movie made with Apple iMovie that includes a WAV file to RU-vid, the audio will undergo a compression process. RU-vid uses its own audio encoding algorithms to optimize the streaming and playback experience. The audio may be transcoded to a different format, such as AAC or Opus, which are commonly used for online streaming. During this compression process, some level of degradation or loss of audio quality may occur. RU-vid applies various techniques to reduce file size and optimize streaming, including bitrate reduction and data compression. As a result, the audio quality may be slightly reduced compared to the original WAV file. The degree of compression and degradation depends on several factors, including the original audio quality, the chosen settings during export from iMovie, and RU-vid's specific compression algorithms. It's important to note that RU-vid's compression is designed to maintain an acceptable level of quality while minimizing file size for efficient streaming, but it may not preserve the full fidelity of the original WAV file. To ensure the best possible audio quality on RU-vid, it's recommended to export your movie with the highest quality settings available in iMovie, such as using a higher bitrate or a lossless audio format like FLAC, if supported.

Bill I'm confused about what the first recording is, you say is played back through the Focusrite AND the Neve?
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
No - the first recording is just the recording itself, so NOT run through either amp.
@benasaro1043
@benasaro1043 Год назад
I'm listening to this through my Neumann NDH20s and RNHP. Not sure how meta that is! :D But the Neve sounds more spacious, has much more control over the low frequencies, and has greater inner detail.
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
Ohh - how do you like the Neumanns? I have had my eye on the 30s (love open back).
@Jason75913
@Jason75913 Год назад
@@chordsoforion I've been mildly curious about the Neumann, too, as it appears to be a rebadged Sennheiser VB630 without the mediocre bass EQ. Not a bad headphone, but definitely no DT770 killer despite its price, I figure that the Neumann must be a tweaked version. I did not know about the new open-back variant, nice. The only potential upgrade over an EQ-corrected DT770 as far as closed-backs is the DT-1770, the one with Tesla drivers, from what I read.

Sounds like an exciter over the entire track - I'd argue it isn't really that great in comparison to the Focusrite. It may be cheap in comparison, but it's doing a fine job. The Neve is there if you want "that" sound
@spaceistheplace6013
@spaceistheplace6013 Год назад
Is that supposed to be for a studio? The focusrite is probably supposed to be flat. The differences sound like what you would find between studio and consumer stereo equipment.
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
Yes - the Neve is designed to be a studio monitoring headphone amp.
@Jason75913
@Jason75913 Год назад
they all are flat, but the Focusrite lacks the clarity of the Neve, hence he feels like there is a small boost in bass hardly surprising, given that we talking about Focusrite here

I can see visually that the Neve track came out louder than the Focusrite. You need to normalize these to do a real quality test.
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
You can't go by the visual because of the difference in dynamics. I used Logic's level matching features to ensure that all 3 are level matched.
@edmubarek5168
@edmubarek5168 Год назад
@@chordsoforion It's nice(ish) that Logic has that feature, but I wouldn't trust it. If it adjusted the Neve up "because of the difference in dynamics," that means that the Neve was compressing the signal somehow. I...find that hard to believe? That aside, if the Neve didn't outperform a pro-sumer Focusrite, it would be down right scandalous. I think the Neve should be tested next to more professional (and expesive) units. Bang for the buck is the order of the day, no? Love your channel; sorry to be all pedantic. :)
@edmubarek5168
@edmubarek5168 Год назад
Sorry, it just occured to me: Does Logic "level match" via peak, RMS, LUFS, or other?
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
Yes to all of those options. It is adjustable depending on your needs. and you can level match individual audio regions, by average level match by track or region selection. It's a powerful tool that I use on most of my mixes to baseline all of my levels for proper gain staging before adding plugins and adjusting balance.
@chordsoforion
@chordsoforion Год назад
Oh and just to clarify - Logic does not apply compression when it level matches. It only adjusts gain. I was referring to the interaction of the headphone amp itself. Keep in mind that I was using the amps in ways that they were NOT designed to operate. So, we can't fully judge the sound as good or bad in this video. It was simply meant to show that there IS a difference.

@@chordsoforion For example you made some great videos about how to use a volume pedal, delays or stereo or what inspires your art, the mood, ambient music an grove .... I also like the videos about making music in the countryside, an your musical goals. The "gearization" of your channel little by little is a slow process, but you can see it with our own eyes if you scroll backwards in your videos list. Maybe gear videos are the kind videos that you like. If you have fun while doing them then don't let stop you by my comments. Maybe you earn money with some of them, I understand this as well, we all have to heat, eat and wear clothes. Greatings from the Baltic coast, Martin

@Jason75913
@Jason75913 Год назад
I hear it as well, but it is not that bad, he could have avoided it by turning down the volume just a bit on the amps whose outputs he was recording. Amps pump out hot signals, they tend to "overload" inputs easily.
