Tarptent Double Rainbow Li with the liner is about the same price, essentially double walled, will fit two people with a 50” floor, and is incredibly well designed. Oh, and it’s lighter and stronger.

This is a pretty cool tent. But super expensive and sold out most places. Is it a glorified hornet? I think if this fabric turns out to be fairly durable, breathable and it is def lightweight than you are getting what you paid for. Large enough for two but a palace for one! I do like the clip that hooks to the rainfly and widens the tent body. Cool feature on their high end models. ! I love nemo products but i always worry with some of their tent designs that have this scooped rainfly at the head end. I could see myself treating the body of the tent just at the head end with some sort of DWR coating spray for added rain protection in that area. I have heard and read stories about that section wetting out during heavy rain. Hopefully this won't be an issue with this tent. Great review man as always! Stay safe! Hike on!

And the Lithium Version cost 650usd . I would always add the 50 to get the DR dyneema instead of this Nemo Hornet Osmo . The regular Hornet at 350 is just a little bit heavier and Performs the same . But then again i would buy the regular Double Rainbow for the same price xD just the better Tent

I have the original Hornet 2P (pre spreader bar on the poles) and it's failed me in rain due to the high cut on the rainfly at the head. That and the fact that it is so very tight on the inside makes this a non-option for most of my trips. It can be down right claustrophobic on the inside. For that kind of money I'd tend to look at DCF single walls before dropping that amount on this tent. Great first look, I'm hoping you can get some time in it to give us your thoughts. Thanks.

Thanks for your good, fair reviews. I just saw another review of this tent. The reviewer quickly put a 2 cm tear in the floor. Nemo reportedly told him to patch it with tape. It is 15d...just too fragile. I will stick to trekking pole tents. My Lanshan 2 is stronger, roomier and more affordable by a long shot for only a weight penalty of roughly 8 ounces. I bought the winter inner, too, which the Nemo does not offer. Plus, I can set the tent high or low for venting or storm-proofing. You can't do that with free-standing tents. And if I break a pole, I can replace it with a stick. Or tie up to an overhanging tree branch. The key is to guy-out the head and foot walls with the line propped up by a stick for each end to vastly increase head and foot clearance. I cannot wait for a review of the coming Tarptent Dipole trekking pole tent. It looks amazing. At 58"-wide, 96"-long (I am 6'), and with screen mesh on all four walls, I think it will be my next, true 2p tent. My wife wants more room than the 48"-wide Lanshan 2 for our duo trips. I am not wild about single-wall, but with all that mesh, I think the condensation will be manageable. Perhaps I can add a mesh roof panel for a Double Rainbow Li to catch drips in harsh storms.

@DeusVult1527 Buyer beware. The pursuit of ultralight has ventured into impractical territory. I mean, what good is poly-cro ground sheets if thorns and thistles pass right through it? Or packs that lack adequate support? Or rain jackets that rip to shreds every 200 miles? I don't get it.

Great video, Bryce! With your evaluation, I will pass on the NEMO Hornet Elite OSMO tent. My husband and I have 25" wide NEMO Tensor pads so that's a deal breaker right off the bat. I love my 2 NEMO tents and don't mind them weighing a bit more because we share the load carrying between the 2 of us. I don't want a tent to collapse out in the wilderness from snow, rain and/or wind. It isn't worth shaving off a pound or two to be miserable in the back country when it fails from being too flimsy.

I have this tent and used it recently on a 6 day hike along the coast of Australia. This tent handled heavy wind and rain loads (including hail, straight off the ocean) easily and I had no issues with condensation or any water ingress. The Tiger Wall is the natural rival to this (which I also own) and both have their pro's and cons. For 95% of the hiking and backpacking I do - this tent will be my go to. If I want a bit more room or am planning to spend more time at camp, the Tiger Wall will be my selection. The TW has a few more features where as the Hornet is definitely on the minimalist side to save weight.

It not having a full length fly on the head end, I think you’d end up wet in a windy rain scenario. Also considering the durability compared to a dyneema tent, I’d go with the dyneema for an extra $50 or so. In a “perfect world”, fair weather weekend hike, for someone with money to blow just for ultralight; it’s probably a good tent. JMO

I don’t think of a two pound tent as UL but as light. I would never pay 600.00 for a none DCF tent. I purchased my BA Tiger Wall two on sale for 300.00 two years ago and I think it’s a great little single person tent. I don’t know why but all tent manufacturers call their tents two person tents which technically you could do but would not like it. I use a three person tent for two people. My dog and I fit nicely in my Duplex and I could fit two but never have, it’s just to tight. I like all my gear inside with me. I am sure that tent is nice but for 600.00 I would spend the extra money on a DCF tent. I guess you are paying more for their new material which as you said is better. Nice things are generally more money.

In my view it's a tent to camp out in ultra dry invironments, because 1200mm HH for the ground sheet is just ridiculous, not waterproof. I didn't look further in the video yet, but the fly won't be much better. Nemo is a fail, if I had used it instead of my Jack Wolfsin Gossamer (more room, 160€, much better HH, stormproof, 1.8kg), I would be dead right now, literally.

I have the Nemo Dagger OSMO 2p tent and got it for 450 dollars at my local store. It is over 4 pounds in weight and isn't lightweight, however there is enough room for two people. In my opinion of using the dagger, it is a better tent than the hornet elite because you can split the parts of the tent with your other hiker. There is also more storage space inside and under the fly. The real question is this, are you aiming for a solo hike and just want the extra room while being super light? Then yeah, I can see why people would pick the hornet elite after switching the stakes (I know I changed out my stakes on the dagger for lighter ones). With the nemo, you can remove the fly to save more weight. Not sure if on the hornet you can remove the mesh tent part and set up only the fly, don't have the tent to figure if it is possible. If so then yeah, it might be worth the big 600. I've seen people spend more on sleeping bags so why cheap out on the tent?

My Hilleburg nalo was $800 it is rock solid in wind and I plan on getting Lanshan pro for fast and light. I can't see how this tent is worth $600, its priced at the same level or a duplex and has less livable space. If you are spending this much money it better be DCF or able to be used 4 season.

Adding a single pound (and yes, I understand that's a big leap) I have a truly free-standing double wall tent with very nearly the same floorspace (though rectangular, so easier for 2 to use) and only cost me $85 with a very similar hydrostatic head. I could shave more weight by going to much lighter pegs, and if I really wanted to, I could get a dyneema tarp and use it as a rainfly that'd work every bit as well and still have ~$400 in my account and be at a very, very similar weight. I suppose it comes down to how creative you are and how much work you're willing to put in. Or... If you're open to a trekking pole tent, a Lunar Duo weighs less or a Haven tarp & mesh tent combo weighs about the same, packs smaller, and will be sturdier. IMO this is actually more comparable to a Lunar Solo in size. Those are all around a third of the price. For the same price as this, you could go to a Zplex Duo which would weigh a good deal less and have more room. Or if you're willing to go to those prices and want a free standing tent that can also be a trekking pole tent, the Tarptent Double Rainbow Li offers better floorspace, and is decidedly lighter with a lower pack size. With all that said, I like a lot of the design elements for this tent, though it's clearly a 1 person tent.
@marylousherman5471

Thanks for your polite analysis. I sent back the Nemo Hornet 1P after a week long hike because I knew it would not stand up to heavy rain... the panel above/behind the head end is not tension-able and the rain fly came down awfully close to the tent when it was dry, so if it got wet what would be the scenario? I didn't like the plastic piece at the top either because it looked as if it would poke through the tent after many uses. The 1P was too small to get my pack in the tent, and the vestibule was minimal. That tent cost $360 in 2021. I have since done some research on others and was able to get an order in for a Durston 2P Solid for $330 that offers a lot more space....it weighs 6 more ozs but that's OK, because it will be much more weather worthy in the climate I hike....can't wait to get it next Spring!

Seems like a pretty good one person tent for mostly sheltered conditions. Would most likely work well on the AT and the PCT if you're careful about camp site selections. I've six tents (I think) and five of them would work fine on Iceland and/or high altitude, high winds in the rest of Scandinavia (with careful camp selection). The last one though - a light weight tent that worked well on the AT would most likely collapse or at least loose the fly on a windy summer day on Iceland. The tent in the video seemed extremely sensitive to pressure, even from the end. Wouldn't want to spend a night in that with high winds and changing wind directions.

I like the innovations we’re seeing in tent fabrics. Improvements to weather stability and pack are always welcome. I do wonder how much of that $600 actually additional cost of manufacturing tent vs a similar sil-nylon design, and how much is simply “look at this new fabric! It’s new! So it’s more expensive! Did we mention new?”

I would be interested in that information as well, but pretty sure Nemo isn't about to share production costs. I imagine there's some R&D cost with development of the fabric that has been passed on to the customer a little. Whether that's true or not, I would rather see a $500 price point.
