Applies to most models 1968 to 1991 with independent trailing arm suspension. Some components are interchangeable between some models during that period. Link to 240D "Overdrive." • Ride Along in My Merce...

I replaced my 3.07 rear gear in a 84 w123 with a 2.88 and replaced both axle shafts checked the ring and pinion gears and spiders also replaced the instrument cluster out of the 1985 the 2.88 came out of it makes more difference than you can imagine and it is a very easy conversion anyone should be able to with no problems. Remember when you keep a Mercedes diesel on the road your dealing with history. Keep them running.

Interesting. I'd like to see how you fit those clips again. 😉

They go in easier than they come out. Use a good pair of needle nose pliers to push them back into the groove in the axle.

At that point, may be it is time to check/change the bearings as well. It would be interesting to see the "how many washers" magic when yout put them back... Thank you Ken!

OMG! I've had a clunking in my differential for a while now and even the mechanic i took it to couldn't figure it out. I bet it's that pressure fit pin. I was so confused i thought maybe it was the differential mount going bad. THANK YOU! I will be tearing the differential apart and seeing if that pin is bad. If that pin is bad do i need to replace the differential or can i just buy the pin?
@Mercedessource
@Mercedessource 3 года назад
If you look closely in the video you can see the pin did not wear much. The housing that it sits gets most of the wear and that requires replacing that whole center section of the differential. Better to just find another good used rear end.

i think i have that worn out pin problem on a W204 C class. I have evidence of the sound on my channel I will have to check it out to confirm as i though it was a gearbox mount but had the gearbox mount replaced sound went away then the sound came back its a scary sound i tel you.

Question May I install a rear axle 3. 07 on Mercedes W123 engine 2300 petrol gear number of speeds 5
@Mercedessource

Yes, with your 5 speed manual transmission that would be a great upgrade!

@@Mercedessource I was contemplating doing a 3.08 swap in my 80 240d, what's done about the speedometer error is there a speedo gear you swap out to get it correct again?

I have a 1988 190D 2.5 NA that was a 4 speed automatic and I converted it to a manual. I think the rear end is a 3.07 and I want to put a 3.64 in it as according to a chart that was stock. But I did have a 717.410 transmission that seemed to make it go a little faster, now I have a 717.411 which is definitely slower. Would that be a good rear end to put and is there any insight on any of this?

Hi I have a w123 230te, there is a notchy rear left clunk on takeoff and then a slight rumble while on the gas, not so much when off the gas, I thought it might be a rear CV joint or....?
@Mercedessource
@Mercedessource 3 года назад
That would be the first thing I would check

My 80 240 d 4 speed does have some clunking if you aren't smooth on the shifts, and does have a little whine in 3rd and 4th gears at higher speeds. When I lift off it's quiet. Could that be in the differential ,and a swap to a good 3.08 will be a blanket solution?

Noise described does sound like typical differential while. Try to find a low (under 200K) used unit.

Thanks for the information! Would you have an idea as to why my W108 makes loud to louder noise from the rear when accelerating in the city? Any videos on the rear diff for W108. I have the 72 280se 4.5
@Mercedessource
@Mercedessource 3 года назад
Either axle bearings, ring and pinion wear or pinion bearing. If noise goes away completely when you let off the throttle most likely related to ring and pinion.

What do you do if the pin is worn out ?
@Mercedessource
@Mercedessource Год назад
Do not try to repair it. Find a good used rear end from a recycler and replace the entire unit.
