Rear-Ended on My Motorcycle: Stop Texting and Driving

I was rear-ended on my motorcycle on Father's Day (June 18, 2023). The driver was texting when it happened, and thankfully, I was not injured. This was a best-case scenario regarding motorcycle accidents, with my bike taking all the damage.

Wow, what a story! I’m glad you walked away unharmed from that accident. We see texting and driving all too much when we’re riding that we joked about carrying eggs on the bikes and egging anyone looking down at their phone.

That sucks Walt, hopefully they get it all worked out quickly. Nice having a tow truck in the family. As far as the biker community experience that you mentioned. I got stuck on the side of the road with my Scout a couple years ago. I had a guy stop, in his car, and asked if I needed help. He then went and drove to his house and came back with a jumper box to help. He said he used to ride and knew the feeling. This guy really showed me how tight this community can be.

Thanks - things are starting to move on the insurance end. The local adjuster assigned to my claim has been great so far. Way more communication!

Walt, I'm glad you weren't seriously injured. Hopefully everything gets worked out with the insurance runaround and your bike can be repaired in a timely manner. It sucks that someone being oblivious can cause this kind of thing to happen. Stay safe out there.

Thanks. Things are starting to move along with the insurance company. My claim was assigned a local adjuster and he has been great with communication. Hopefully I'll hear more in the next few days about the repair timeline.

I'm relieved to hear that you're unharmed and weren't injured. However, I'm troubled to learn that another person told the child to stop talking. While it's understandable to be concerned about the child, but... It's also disappointing that the driver, who should know better, (as her husband is a rider), allowed this to happen. On a positive note, it's heartening to know that you received assistance from a truly helpful individual. You experienced true motorcycle brotherhood. Thanks for sharing.

I've got mixed feelings about the witness telling the child to stop talking. On one hand I'd hate for the kid to feel guilty that he got his grandmother in trouble by saying too much but on the other hand... I was blown away by a random stranger offering so much help. It is something I'll remember long after the accident.

Man, I'm glad you're OK - but 100% avoidable, by her. SMH, phone zombies drive me nuts. There's no reason to be on your phone, and every day there's more and more of them. Good on that guy for helping you out, like the other people said, maybe go ride over and thank him, when you're ready.

I hope all the parts are available and you can get it fixed relatively quickly. We just got our car back... needed a new engine...waited 2 3/4 months for it...🙄

That is my concern - between shops being busy during peak riding season and back-orders, hopefully it isn't a terribly long time.

When I was new and wrecked my Vulcan 800 due to a driver making a right from the middle lane, it was NBD to get back on 2s. I learned a few things, and incorporated those into my riding habits. When I dumped my Vaquero [something slick spilled on the road], I was forever haunted by that. Until, that is, I got my Street Glide. I wouldn't be surprised if your heightened level of paranoia/anxiety/brain stuff gets to you when you ride the Yamaha again. Not saying it will, and I hope it doesn't, but I know it happened to me.

I'm already experiencing some of that anxiety. When I hopped on my Ninja a few days after the accident I was paranoid about vehicles behind me - especially at traffic lights.

@WaltInPA That's normal, I think. It ought to fade into a regular paranoia with time. I had tunnel vision, heightened anxiety, and a general feeling of dread whenever I rode my Vaquero.

Things are moving on my end now. A local adjuster was assigned to my claim and he has been fantastic. Lots of communication, and things are moving right along. He had the bike transported to the dealership today 👍

Oddly enough, the last car accident that I was involved in (someone pulled out in front of me and totaled my car several years ago) happened on Mothers Day. Now an accident on Fathers Day - I think I'm going to stay home on Holidays from now on... 😅

I try to avoid 422 at all costs. Being out near Lancaster, it helps avoiding it. Perhaps if you're back in that area just put a simple thank you card and a gift card in his mailbox!

What you haven't covered is what most rider miss...what have you learned? How could the accident have been avoided? Always Always Always expect to be rear ended at an intersection. Many riders fail to perform rear traffic management...slow down prior to the intersection earlier to ensure the traffic behind slows and sees you while you flash your tail light. Then, keep an eye on them while they are stopped behind you. Might want to say refrain from saying you are alright so soon. Say something like I'm not sure, or I need to get checked or something.
