Rear Facing, Rear Collision car seat issue

Car seats in America are designed for frontal and side impact. What about the 5% to 10% of vehicle collisions that are rear impact. This is what happens when a name brand, mid-tier car seat is involved in a rear collision. The car manufacturer from Sweden with arguably the safest vehicles in the world, now offer tether anchors on the Front seat rail to tether compatible rear facing seats, preventing this. Rebound Bar also prevents this. Research is coming to light that there is a high brain injury risk for the childs head to contact the seat back in rear-end collision scenarios. Some say this is to cocoon in the case of an accident. I agree that this is a good thing in the case of a frontal collision. However, in the case of a rear collision (Hit at 40mph while stopped at a stop sign) there have been many cases of child head injury or death when the head impacts the seat as the car seat abruptly folds up into the cocoon position. That is why we chose to go with a car seat equipped with a rebound bar which serves its purpose in both frontal and rear collisions.

You are supposed to undo the cushion and pull the strap from inside of the car seat it gets a tighter fit and then put your adults weight in it and then pull at the same time that will give you a much snugger fit

1. A car seat is not meant to hold an adults weight, so please don’t sit in your seat. 2. You only check for movement at the belt path with your non-dominant hand with the force of a hand shake. 3. This is normal and safe, it is called cocooning.

Thanks for the information! So just to clarify, the strap was extremely tight. I have researched the cocooning idea and agree that some are designed to do this. I don't think it is quite as safe as a rebound bar but that is my personal opinion. What I also find interesting is that car seats in the US are not required to be crash tested to simulate a rear crash. Only front and side. Also the safest vehicle manufacturer (Volvo) on the planet provides anchors for tether compatible seats. Higher end seat manufacturers also have optional or required rebound bars, arguably for added safety. We ended up returning this seat and buying a Clek fllo with a rebound bar and it is a fantastic improvement over the slimfit. Lots of info out there about rebound vs tether vs none. It seems there is movement towards use of rebound or tether over the cocooning option but there needs to be more publicly available research into factually proving which is best overall. Again thank you for your response!

Amber Serra that is the correct way to install car seat. Putting adult weight makes it more secure than tugging without putting severe weight into it. Go to your local sheriff's office and ask them if you're not sure.

I also use the actual seatbelt double loop through. If you want it that tight…. But cocooning is the idea

An infant carrier seat has the handle that will hit the back of the seat and protect the baby inside. That’s why many models instruct you to drive with the handle up. Some convertible, such as Britax seats, come with anti-rebound bars. New tests show that children in rear facing car seats are still VERY safe in their seats. It’s very ill advised to jerryrig something up for your car seat.
@jordybanks9010
@jordybanks9010 3 года назад
If your straps are tightened correctly, the child will not move forward. And rear facing collisions are commonly less of an impact compared to that of a front or side impact. A lot of New car seats also have inbuilt rebound bars. Australia (where I am) has some of the strictest car seat regulations in the world. We arent allowed chest clips because of the studies shown on how they can be more dangerous than safe. Our 5 point harnesses are enough.
@lbtremblay
@lbtremblay 6 лет назад
This is normal and safe. Do not rig something up to use the tether. This seat was never tested with a RF tether. If cocooning really bothers you, you might consider a seat with an anti rebound bar such as Britax clicktight convertible with ARB or a Clek convertible. Diono and combi cocorro are only brands in US market that still manufacturer seats that allow use of swedish tether as you are describing. -cpst

It's not safe to have your seat move like that. With a rear impact the child's head can rotate up and hit the headrest. Here is what I did ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-evb6BmaqmyQ.html

Using a top tether is only for forward facing and must be used forward facing but you never ever use it rear facing it will cause your seat to snap backwards breaking your child’s spine. Please read your manuals 🥺 moving upwards like that is normal it’s called a concooing mechanism, it’s normal to have top movement in the seat as long as it doesn’t move more than an inch side to side from withholding it near the belt path !

This seat is manufactured to cocoon. Please contact graco and don't try and jerry rig your own "solution" to this. The seat needs to give some to absorb the shock of an impact, and this seat was tested just like it was manufactured, including the cocooning feature.

Most people are saying this is to cocoon in the case of an accident. I agree that this is a good thing in the case of a frontal collision. However, in the case of a rear collision (Hit at 40mph while stopped at a stop sign) there have been many cases of child head injury or death when the head impacts the seat as the car seat folds up into the cocoon position too quickly. That is why they need to make an anti-rebound bar a standard feature in carseats. But unfortunately only a few have them. And you almost never see a seat with an anti-rebound bar and a load bearing leg.

I know this is 5yrs later, but the issue you were having is not the car seat or your vehicle itself. The issue was the car seat was being supported by the back of the seat, the area where you tighten and loosen the straps should not be in contact with the back of the seat. You would have needed to use a solid piece of foam, or a rolled towel under the base of the seat. This allows the base of the car seat to be in full contact with the seat of the vehicle. I can upload a video demonstration if your interested. I am a child passenger safety instructor.

You should remove this video. This is very dangerous. First you should never put the weight of a adult in the seat. Second the seat is designed to move like that. You only check for movement at the belt path. The forward movement helps the seat absorb the shock and cocoon the baby. I think it’s funny you act like you know more then the manufacturer. This car seat pass all its crash test. If you were unsure why would you not contact them. You could have possibly put babies in danger with your false information.

1. I will keep this demonstration video posted because I hope someone sees it, researches the issue as I did, and decides to reject the sub-par "design" of many low quality child seats on the market in the US which could cause serious injury to a child in a rear collision scenario. Please follow the link below. This study, published in the October 2015 issue of the Journal of Traffic Injury Prevention, found that an infant-sized crash-test dummy registered serious head injuries when its rear-facing car seat pitched forward - toward the back of the vehicle - in rear-end crash tests. www.ndtv.com/world-news/study-of-rear-end-crashes-finds-head-injuries-from-rear-facing-child-seats-1238990 2. A car seat needs to be as tight as possible on the anchors. This is why some now have force multiplying pull straps to cinch the child seat deeper into the seat cushions for security. If one were to tether this securely to the front seat rail as seen in a modern Volvo, it should only increase the child's safety in the same manner as a forward facing rear tether setup for older children. US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 governs required car seat collision testing in order to be offered for sale in the US Market. Please research this Standard as it contains no requirement for rear collision testing to this day. This statement is straight from Gracos website, "While no rear-impact crash testing is currently required under the US FMVSS 213, Graco® tests our ProtectPlus Engineered™ car seats for rear-impact collisions based on the European Standard Rear-Impact crash pulse." Graco claims that this slimfit seat in the video is indeed tested based on this European standard. They are not required to pass the test, but at least they have performed the test. Would love to see Gracos testing results for this carseat. Maybe I will request it and see what they say. The entire point of this video is to demonstrate one of the car seats we thought would be safe for our child but simple common sense told me this would not be sufficient and caused me to thoroughly research the subject. The conclusion I arrived at is that I will trust the objective test results from companies who build the best car seats and are required to test and pass all of their seats in rear collision scenarios. It was apparently a significant enough issue that Europe deemed it necessary to create the European Standard for Rear-Impact crash pulse Lastly, I certainly hope that any person watching this video will do their own research and make their own decision on whether the demonstration and information I have shared is as you say "False information" or is actually the truth.

@@1776Blue All car seats have weight limits. You do not put the weight of an adult in a car seat this can damage the seat. I did not say you can’t put some weight or apply pressure to tighten the straps but not a grown adult putting all their weight into it.
@deonnaborden2988
@deonnaborden2988 3 года назад
@@1776Blue That is not true and I would suggest you contact Graco with your questions. There are ways to install a seat without using the weight of an adult. One is called the “inside out trick” also compressing the seat. You absolutely can over tighten the seatbelt or lower latches that can cause damage. Most people think the tighter the better but that is not true. You should have less then once inch of movement at belt path with your non dominant hand with only the force of a hand shake.

@@1776Blue Oh how fun! The problem with it being to tight is it can break the internal part especially in a accident. I would just tighten the seatbelt or lower latch straps to have less then one inch of movement at belt path. Since you are only using the seat for a doll you should be fine with it over tighten as long as you are never planning on using the seat for a real baby!

My wife was kneeling in the seat when I was pulling very hard on the straps. It was certainly as tight as we could get it. We ended up returning it and going with a Clek fllo. It may be the shape of the seat in our SUV that doesn't work well with this design.

bruizer2011 The seat is not intended to be attached that way. It was not tested that way, and could cause serious injury to your child. If you want a seat that allows and has tested rear tethering, please get a Diono or Peg Perego convertible seat.
@kayleemoore5819
@kayleemoore5819 Год назад
If your child is strapped in properly their head will not hit the back seat. This is also not how you check if a carseat is tight enough in a seat. You need to wiggle the seat with one hand from the belt path and it shouldn't move more than an inch. Please do not make alterations to your carseat youself. 🥴🥴 You can watch crash tests from rear facing seats in rear collisions.

The instructions for rear facing installation say to use the included belt designed for the LATCH anchors built into the seat by the manufacturer for this purpose. If used in a seat where there are no LATCH anchors points, then you are supposed to run the vehicle seatbelt through that same location.

We switched my daughter to forward facing at 2.5, two weeks later we got rear ended badly, she was kind of sucked into the seat and had no injuries. My head wiped back and I got hurt. Cant Can’t imagine if she would’ve flung back if we still were rear facing… people take alot of extended rear facing but if you are more likely to be rear ended (like in a big city where I am) then physics says forward is safe if they are old enough and weigh enough. Especially since toddlers are so upright, the head and seat will spring forward when rear facing in a rear end collision.
@tristenobriant6588

That’s literally 100% false. Rear facing is absolutely safer in a rear collision. They will be pushed to the back of their seat vs being flung forward as they are forward facing

@@tristenobriant6588 a rear end collision with a rear facing car seat is no different than a front end collision with a forward facing car seat. The likelihood of a fatal brain stem detachment is very plausible given the right speeds. Neither way is statistically safer than the other.
