Reason is a unique visually pleasant old-school DAW with a neglected sequencer with instruments and virtual devices. Kontakt is a sampler... so good a sampler that instruments created with it can cost a lot of money and you can make your own virtual instruments with it. And you can use Kontakt inside Reason. They're 2 different animals.

If i look at it as a plugin and not so much as a daw, I'm not that frustrated and honestly - as a plugin - it has so much more value. You can use your favorite daw and use the reason plugin and get the best of both worlds.
I appreciate your approach on speaking about Reason by comparing its other uses. I come to you and sef Nitty when i need more insight on using Reason. Ive since gotten Studio One and Ableton(for a online course) and I still love the sound creativity Reason provides but now that Ive worked in other DAWs, I see everyone's complaint about Reasons sequencer features for better workflow...Only time will tell.
Yes, you move in and out of scales but if you know theory its still useful. It gives you a good many of them. Just have to figure the other's you want to use, or where you're moving in and out of.
I Love Native instruments for Battery. I've used reason in the past and even demo'd it but NI just takes it for the piano sounds (Granduer & Noir) for me as a piano player.

I don't use reason much anymore but was gonna upgrade to use it inside of maschine and cubase but not for more than 129.00 Kontakt with machine is better in my opinion other than vocals are easier in reason..but I love all the quality sounds from native instruments..and I also have ultimate 13 and new play series and maschine expansion are always top notch...I haven't wanted anything from reason in years
I jumped to FL studio as I tried many times with ableton and didn't clicked for me, as being one of the DAW's I used before Reason also, it was easy for me to go back and start discovering new things in it ! Reason was for so long a good and still is a good DAW in many areas, but at the end, this Sequencer not updating for years and also no more workflow enhancements... Man, no thanks ! the raise was a second point for me to jump back to FL, as it's always (till now) a free lifetime update after you purchase the signature bundle !
Reason sounds great if we're comparing the stock sounds of DAWs but for Reason to compete with NI, it really needs to step it's game up. If you compare Reason to Kontakt, Reason has the advantage of more ways to generate sounds as Kontakt is primarily a sampler. Once you expand the playing field by comparing Reason's synths to Native Instrument's Komplete library. Native Instruments has the advantage. Realtor does everything the combinator does and more.
To be fair, VST3 support is supposed to be coming in January. As somebody who only uses the Rack and NEVER used Reason, I wonder if it's too little too late. I love the people at PropellerHead, I love the RU-vid channel, I love the Rack and Rack Devices, and I hate the DAW lol. I do wish the best for them, but I almost wonder if charging $400 for the DAW is hurting them at this point. I think making the DAW free and charging for the Rack/Devices would be the best way to go.

Love Reason as a plugin! So glad they did it, been using since 2.5 but always via rewire since it wasn't ever my main DAW. It seems more CPU efficient as plugin vs rewire too, and less routing hassle for me in protools. Great having their effects to insert too - Screams and Pulverizer for everything! haha. I just started exploring Reason+ too, was reluctant but i'm digging it so far (used a RoyalFlush 808 on a beat too btw:)) Cheers
You mention how both Reason and Kontakt have separate outputs but this isn't quite accurate for the rack plugin version. While devices within it can have separate outs they all merge to stereo pair in non Reason DAW, while Komtakt's are truly separate, assignable to different tracks in DAW. Good video.

Kontakt sounds better IMO. And im a Reason user since 3.0 now on 12. Give me Kontakt quality sounds in Reason stock devices and ReasonStudios might be onto something
I feel for Reason users. I’m not a diehard Reason user, but did buy a previous version, as one of my former friends could only make beats on Reason. Now that it’s available as a plug-in and I can upgrade for only $79.99 with the sale on Sweetwater, I’m hopped on it to add to my VST collection. Lol 🤷🏾♂️

The guys at reason studios are simply trying to force everyone to switch over to the subscription service with this ridiculous price increase announced.. Quite a sad bullying tactic. The arrogance and the total lack of care for their loyal users is enough reason to abandon this product both as a daw and as a plugin. They want to be rewarded for doing so little.. reason 12 is a disappointing update .. I'll stick to reason 11. Probably sell off the license.. there are way too many alternatives these days to be dwelling on one product whose maker does not even care....
Yeah money grab... sad. Development cycles are normally 2-3 years so we won't see a major update for a long time. These older DAW makers are struggling because they are fighting against old code versus new things that are desired. If they have the R&D dollars it would be easy, but most don't so it takes longer to revamp older things. I moved to Ableton as they are a little more up to date, but not by much. They are suffering from the same problem, but I am able to do more with it. I don't like the subscription model. It's like you will never own the things you are paying for with it. It forces you to stay in their ecosystem as well just like protools... which is a horrible creativity tool. When you don't have the money for R & D this is what happens.... you look for ways to add income to cover costs.

I saw this coming the sec. Reason+ was announced. Diehard users are dead, or dying. From meager upgrade features, inflated pricing; to ignoring its loyal user base, Reason Studios killed us all...1 by 1.
The great thing about Reason is the sounds you're looking for can be added. They may not come standard in the DAW but it's not a closed platform anymore so the skies the limit.
After the announced price hike for the buggy ass Reason 12, I'm out. Now I just have to decide which DAW that I will use to host Reason 11 Suite as a plugin.
@@dougroyce5784 Just remember, you asked.😆 For me, starting with the layout of the sequencer, I've noticed right away how adjustable parameters like (Start, End, Length, Volume, Transpose, Fine Tune, etc) are fixed in a panel above the timeline (reminds me of Reason). I love how I can simply right click to toggle between tools (arrow, range, mute, glue, eraser, zoom, etc) vs. the QWERTY setup. For me, this just makes editing a breeze. However, these tools are assigned to keys as well. You can set snapping to grid resolution OR TRANSIENTS straight from the sequencer. The Sampler track and the way it is implemented in Cubase is a feature I've been begging for in Reason forever. All of my effects plug-ins are automatically categorized by type (EQ, Dynamics, Reverb, Delay Distortion, etc) vs by plug-in Developers....?? 🤔🤨🙄😑😔🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️ The way midi editing based off chords/melodies vs. drum/percussion is handled differently. My favorite of all.... The mixer (...😍🤪🤯)‼️ This could be a whole post unto itself. This is all from me using the software steadily for just a month...so I know I've barely scratched the surface (like Chord track😍...an extensive implementation of Scales and Chords, but integrated into the sequencer). And I still haven't mentioned everything discovered that I'm loving about Cubase, so far. From feature request I've read in forums (ReasonTalk), RU-vid videos, & comments in RU-vid videos, (ie. importing video, scoring, solo defeat/isolate, more colors, etc) it's all in Cubase. Hence, why I state Cubase is the ying to the Reason yang.

I've been critical of Reason's sequencer but I think Reason as a plugin is well worth the vast amount of possible sounds. With Logic you have many build in audio FX to enhance your sound (which is what the other plugins do anyway).
Logic and Reason for the win. I've just upgraded from 11 suite to 12 and the program is about a quarter of the size ..why would that be? Great video. Thank you.
Really good review … dry very well researched 👏👏…..generally I think the two systems reviewed are suited for different categories of music . I use Reason for synths and drum…it’s excellent ..reason does not present well as an option for orchestral libraries or vocal libraries or sonic tools such Elysian, exhale or Pharlight type libraries. Both types tools are ultimately valid …. Folks need to know what you are saying 👍….We are all so lucky 🙏🙏🏿

I started on Reason 5, and I only ever upgraded once (Reason 9) so I could use VSTs. To be honest, I doubt I'm ever gonna upgrade in any way again. Don't see the point when I'm not making the money right now... maybe in the future.
I just bought Komplete 14 but there no sound went i hit any of the keys wether i use my midi or virtual keyboard. I also don't see it when i try to open it in Reason despite it showing up in my Programs installed panel. Can you provide any help???
I made 3 eps 2 mixtapes and an album on Reasons over the last 10 yrs. BUT LATELY, Ive grown bored with their DAW. I tried out the Maschine 3. The Sounds are FIRE but the layout is a pain in the A$$ to learn.

Kontakt is in sale and there are so many amazing libraries for it. Plus, the integration with Reason is good. You can use CV on it and make a lot of crazy sounds!
anyone has any idea how - is there any kinda mini sequencer I can put in a combinator? - but not like Matrix, matrix cannot handle multiple notes at same time, and rhytm composer is not so good, I mean a real recording mini sequencer ? Cheers
Kontakt is superior in terms of sample libraries and as far as size and advanced scripting...but that's it. In my opinion, Reason is far better than Kontakt for several reasons. Unlike Kontakt, Reason is also a DAW and everything's integrated and the Rack extensions are the best part(as all you need to do is download & you are good to go(no configuring a messy installation process.) Reason is so intuitive, that you'll never have to rely on tech support. My past experiences with Kontakt were replete with installation and registration problems and I was all on my own,to figure it out myself,because NI support is f**king useless!
Thank you firstly for all the years of your first class advice Reason as a plug in is now core to Reason us die hards just come way down the list I guess this is the way of the world I have asked for years for basic midi comp mode but that's still not here as far as I know I looked at logic again after dropping it years ago and it has loads of cool new features just to see what chords your playing on the screen is mind blowing I use Reason with kontakt as a VST to give the most flexibility My Question is can you put VSTs into the combinator ? People complain about Reason as a DAW, but Reason has every tool you need to produce your song. Just buy the vsts you need and you should be good to go. Using a different Daw isn't going to make your song a hit.
did you ever try or came across maybe even just by accident a way to have reason running in sync with any kind of video editing software im not just talking a video playback vst or something like that more in the lines of vegas video from sony for example . ive tryed to get them in sync via midiclock but sofar only one very unpractical workaround was possible (for example .. running two different version of reason at the same time one beeing 32 bit and one 64 bit having the 32 bit as slave into cubase on a 32 bit machine (like windows 98 or something) having cubase synced up to ableton and ableton sycned to vegas video .. in this case like 4 computer are running at the same time just to jump through all the sync limitation in between .. you get the idea its unpractical. i dont even need the video editing program as master like reason has to jump along when you do the vidoe editing its more like IF i let it play in reason i can see the video editing changes on the fly and adjust and make the music acording to it without having to export the audio every time i just wanna preview of what ever it is im working on . thanks anyway like your videos cheers and greetings from germany .. Have you ever tried to use Numark DJ2go2 or any other DJ equipment controller with propellerhead reason to give your beats a scratching effect in reason I purchased one and I was wondering how would I be able to do that if it is even possible would you be able to do a Video on it or give me some pointer I would appreciate it
No I haven’t. You would have to record the Numark somehow. If it has outputs for that you’ll be set. If you can’t access that or it’s not a function it’s probably not possible in Reason.
I don’t have Kontakt but I know for fact those libraries are being used in a ton of sample packs compared with reason sounds. I would much rather have ominisphere. Then add a couple of kontackt stuff. Great video and details. Thanks
Does anyone know if Reason will support VST3's in the future? For the moment, I can't use all of my native Antares plug ins: VOX4, Autotune, Harmonizer ect.
Reason Rack vs Maschine /kontakt would be a wayyyy better video.. because maschine is a half ass daw also but has all of the sound design feature you could every want
I really think they’re trying to sink this DAW. Now you’re raising the price of a buggy, incomplete, and half of a DAW. Man i can’t wait until they finish updating 12 because I’m done.
Kontakt bothers me. Like, you have to buy a plug-in to have the privilege of buying Plug-ins. And the player is garbage because you normally need the full version to buy kontakt instruments. They should be a $10 subscription plan that includes Kontakt full and all N.I created Kontakt instruments. But it always bothered me that you essentially had to buy a plug-in in order to buy Plug-ins. It's an extra layer to milk money out of you. That's like if Reason Studios made you buy the JUST THE RACK for $300, then pay an additional $200 for each Rack Device.
@@krakapoww I'm at a point in my career where pirating is more trouble than beneficial, and I HAVE to represent myself in a professional manner. I have brand reputation & relationships to manage, as well as I cannot risk getting a virus since I work with multiple brands and clients. That's OTHER PEOPLES WORK I'm putting at risk. Also, cracking software means no updating, which could absolutely DESTROY my ability to go back and edit old projects. What if somebody wants a beat from 3 years ago and my cracked software no longer works? Welp, that's a $300 deal that falls through. Professionals do not pirate software. They support the companies that support them and allow them to make money and do audio engineering as a job.
Kontakt is not a DAW, it's a sampler. The libraries you buy to play in it were made with Kontakt. You can make your own instruments and sell them if you wanted.
