I have witnessed.two mom's talking and one bragging about the activities her 5 (!) year old son is doing in a week - the poor kid had a schedule like a MANAGER. I think it's the parents who are feeding their own egos that way, no kids of that age would by themselves be coming up with the idea they wanted to do tennis and such.
I also live in Germany (2 years now), and so many things I didn't realise yet and then when I'm watching your videos, I'm the whole time: wow, how have I didn't notice that? "Spaghettieis" was my first ice in Germany, I moved in in summer and I didn't have much money yet so I ordered this in kids size, but it was so delicious and also not too small 😅
These types of videos make me so excited to get to Germany! My husband’s still applying and getting lots of interviews, a few offers, too! Anyway, one of the big reasons is because of how Germans take their relaxation so seriously, like you mentioned. There is so much pressure here in the US to have our kids in so many activities - to stay busy. We don’t do that as a family but the pressure is still there.
Guest workers (Gastarbeiter) from Italy brought their cuisine and their gelato to Germany since the 60s, adding their bit of Italian culture to Germany. Same with Greece, Turkey, and various other countries. That's how Germany slowly became multi-cultural after the war.
I have always found that in NZ, it almost feels like there is pressure to appear busy, look busy, be busy, simply say " aww yeah good, keeping busy ya know" I have noticed that if I say to a kiwi parent " nah we're just staying at home this weekend, just chilling" I get a look of such confusion from them. Or the other classic is " what sport does your son play?" when they hardly know us to begin with 😅 there doesn't seem to be any emphasis on simply being and relaxing in NZ. It's almost an embarrassment if you say to someone " nope my child doesn't or wouldn't want to join x, y and z" good point Antoinette! Take care😊
@@amygiess8906 When my kids were young in Hastings it was a juggling act with netball and football. Antoinette is right about kids playing multiple sports. And it can be a balancing act if other things are involved as well. I am in the UK on my own but you don't forget your children growing up.
I love German icecreams and also going to Rossmann or DM , when I go to Germany, Rossmann is a mandatory place for me to go, the product variety in both is so big compared to Spain!
There is no season when you don't can have ice cream. I was walking with a cone of ice cream in January whil it was nsowing because I felt like having an ice cream. :-D
Gruß Antoinette von Kalifornien! The San Francisco Bay Area. Enjoy your videos. Mine Frau ist from Berlin. Enjoy your Vlogs! Ah Kaffee und Kuchen. Take care and congratulations on your pregnancy!
When I raised my kids we had the rule of one kid, one after school activitv. Otherwise they can't meet up with friends and me as mom would have to taxi them daily somewhere
It depends on in which community you are roaming. You can find very busy families in the bildungsbuergertum don’t finding any time spot for playing with their friends.
good morning, what a early bird video ^^ Have a nice day but for me its "good night" came right from my night shift btw the best supermarket ice-cream , for me will ever be Ben & Jerry´s ^^
Does DM still offer free sanitizing wipes at the baby changing stations or is that all futsch wegen Corona? Cuz I used to shop DM for ethanol-alcohol spray for disinfecting, a bottle only cost 1.75, Denk Mit marke. They are long gone. And the local Apoteka wants over 10 Euros for the exact same thing. I quickly realized that Germans didn't understand that Franzbrandwein is also ethanol alcohol, with a pleasant Fir tree scent. For less than 2E per 500 ml bottle. I felt guilty stocking up on them in Corona time. But I haven't seen a bottle of laundry bleach at Edeka since 2019. Apparently people are sucking up the bleach. Anyway, your video again comforted me while feeling trapped here. It surprised me that NZ people are more driven than Germans, and you feel a more relaxed work culture here. I know nothing about NZ but I assumed it was like Australia, Hawaii, all laid back and stuff.
Point No. 2 is not really true anymore, unfortunately. The number of people starring on their cellphones all day long, typing unnecessary messages on social network apps, and having phone calls everywhere and at every time of the day is increasing more and more. In my opinion, this is a worldwide phenomenon, which has reached Germany as well. And it is a very bad development which kills face to face conversation more and more. Btw, the influence of Italy on German food is not restricted to ice cream. Me, I can't imagine the German cuisine without the Italian influence. This is an enrichment in German meals I never wanna miss. Grazie mille, Italia per pizza, pasta e gelati 🥰
I really enjoyed this Antoinette. Two things, German Ice cream is amazing. I went to a small place on the edge of Düsseldorf and fell in love with it.....still miss Rush Munro ice cream though. I has some when I went back to Hastings last year complete with waffle cone 😋. You are right about the drug stores there in Germany. I was blown away and made sure I had a good squiz when I was in the DM store. Can I ask am question please? On the instagram pictures you showed am I mistaken or was that a picture of Bare Island taken from the beach. I always can never remember if its Waimarama or Ocean Beach. Great video thanks 😊.
Hi Gary, yes Rush Munros is definitely delicious! I loved their passionfruit sodas!! unfortunately, they changed owners a while back and it doesn't quite taste the same as I remember when I was a kid. I must say I enjoy a classic tip top ice cream. The photo is of Bare Island at Waimarama beach, my favourite place in the whole world! My dad was in the Waimarama surf life-saving club for many years.
@@AntoinetteEmily Thanks Antoinette, I agree Rush Monros is not what it was. I liked it last year but it's lost it's way with the new owners. Thank for confirming Bare Island. I've seen it twice only but love Waimarama. So wild and alluring. I miss home so much but st 66 and on UK pension the logistics of moving back are beyond me now. Appreciate your reply very much!
@@garynarborough I can imagine how hard that would be for you. I haven't been back since Matteo was a baby and Corona has delayed the trip we had planned, so no idea when we will get back to new Zealand. I really hope you make it back there again.
I have seen another video where an american exchange student who was in Germany the past year said really the same about german / italian ice cream! I haven't noticed this before as a German!
sometimes i think that living in bavaria is completely different from living in north rhine westphalia the opposite is true here 🙄 I love your videos ❤️
Hello Antoinette. Relaxing is very important, a good work life balance can help with your health care. Slow down everything a little bit specially on Sunday is something i really like and appreciate a lot. And if someone disturbs that with his mobile phone that makes me so angry, the same if I met somebody and I gave him/her or them my full attention then i like to have the same for my, it's rude and disrespectful. Which flavour of ice cream do you prefer??
@@AntoinetteEmily oooh chocolate and pistachio flavour always works for me as well. The pistachio nuts are one of my biggest weaknesses, i love them so much.
On RU-vid is a lady from the UK who has moved to New Zealand, I have forgotten the name of her channel. She lives in a yurt that is nicely furnished. I left her when she advocated using no deodorant and never shaving her under arms and buying 4000 trees with donor money.
DM is not only a good shop but also a good employer. Have you noticed that they only have prices ending with a 5? They don't have 1.99 offers, only 1,95 e.g.
Those times when a ice scoop costed just 0,50€. Later they raised it to 0,80€. And people didn't liked it back then. And that was just about 10-15 years ago. Now 1,20€ for a scoop. I hope it didn't get more expensive. 😅 The ice (Gelato) is still very delicious! 😄
I am old enough to remember when McDonalds gave an enormous soft-serve ice cream cone for only 25 cents. It was so big you could barely finish it. Soft serve isn't really a thing here in Germany. My husband goes right to Dairy Queen on arrival in America.
One about living US families are busy with multiple activities. Parents working not have time for their kids because don’t get has much down time. There not many laws for family. Like months of parents leave, sick leave, or vacation. Like in European countries. Most lucky get a fees days a week or 2. You don’t hear month. I hope future better laws on Taking time to yourSelf like in Germany.
You are really right about german's ice cream. They are some of the best in the world! Talking about parents , since I don't have little kids anymore, I had't noticed that they don't use their cell phones that much when with their children. I've heard that they don't like kids to watch television,or do so for very stricted tine during the day.. Antoinette you are an adorable person, so loving and cute. We hope the best for you always. Greetings from Brazil ( that is why my English is not that good...lol,)
Also euch allen einen besinnlich-chilligen Sommer!
The ice cream place is S***** E*******, isn't it? I'd like to know as I want to ride with my bike to there and have some ice cream on one of my next rides.
I hate watching people in America do that with their kids! I mean you had the kids you bothered to bring them to the park to play you obviously wanted children why are you on your phone and ignoring them?? I just don't understand that maybe it's my struggle with infertility, but I just don't get it.
You should have been in Germany 30 years ago when the parents have been more relaxed. Nowadays most of them are helicopter parents, always above them. Taking them all over by car. There is less respect and responsibility among the younger people.
Oh ja. Die Helikoptereltern. Oder Rasemaehereltern. Ganz furchtbar.
When you said "Gelato with German twist" I expected German flavors: beer, pork, potato salad, bread, fleischsalat etc : D I love DM too, but we have Rossmanns only, I like them a bit less : D
You are so lucky where you live. Raising kids in the country is the best. You are so lucky to be able to stay home with the kids and not having a licence and car in my view is part of your stress free life.
I'll always remember the strawberry ice-cream on a large waffle cone I got from a hargendass place in potsdamer plaz 12 years ago 😋 actually still got the spoon I was given for it.
Also willkommen in unserer Gemeinschaft!
Ok, ok. All you expats praising Germany start to convince me slowly, that we live on the best spot on this planet. I had this suspicion already, but wouldn't express it myself. 🤪😇
This reminds me of our trips to Munich when my son was young. It was so child friendly with lots of great playgrounds and safe cycle tracks compared to the UK. We also loved the ice cream.
For children it is best when they can experience small adventures without constantly helicopter parents buzzing around. But when the children come back, a parent must be there so that they can tell what exciting experiences they have had.
Hihihi, so many (young) Germans would really love to immigrate to NZ. And you praise our country so much, that I am afraid that all Kiwis would immigrate to Germany after they had seen your videos. Thanks to God that we are living in times of peace and to relocate in freedom. There had been worst times enough in the past.
DM is just the best store ever!!! I spend way too much time every time I go.. haha Love your videos- I always forget how great Germany can be, so thanks for reminding me
Antoinette you use many Americanisms ie Drug store not Chemist or Pharmacy. In Germany the Pharmacy is Apoteke for prescriptions.Makeup etc at Drug store.Greetings fri. Ballarat Victoria Australia Renate Westenberger
I use Insta so much more then youtube! eeeek. I pretty much 'daily vlog' on there hehehe! That's a good idea having Sunday's off. I feel like after school activities/sport has grown a lot. I don't remember playing much sport as a kid! I have a friend who literally spends every weekend at spot for all her kids! no wonder she is so tired all the time.
Zuhause. "Quality time". 50g Schokolade. 50-60g Walnüsse. Dann passt das: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LgrAwewqO58.html (he's always fantastic. And listen closely: you don't wanna miss the jokes he's ripping while guiding you through the process.)
Hi I have a question 🙂 what is the name of the video in which you talk about the school system in Germany ? I really would love to rewatch it 🥰 I love all of your video’s thank you for the hard work ☺️
But there ARE a lot of people who are glued to their phone, even parents of young children. On some playgrounds you can see them by the dozen, especially in neighborhoods with a lot of uneducated people. And once in the waiting room of a doctor, I saw a young couple with a small and quirky child (about a year old), both parents were at their phones constantly, and when it was the woman's turn to see the doctor, she wanted to leave the kid with his Dad, but the Dad insisted she take the kid with her and he went on playing a game on his phone . 🙄 I didn't know them, but I suppose they were the kind of uneducated folks who don't care much about their kids, don't play with them or read them bedtime stories, but who normally just "park" them in front of the TV. And then there's the kind of parents who will cram their children's lives with all kinds of activities (tennis, ballet, foreign languages and whatnot) so they even have to make an appointment at 2 weeks' notice for playing with a friend. Both are extremes, but they exist. Fortunately the majority of parents in Germany acknowledge that kids are kids and need time to play with their friends, preferably outside, and the parents also take good care of their children, play with them, read to them and encourage them to do things they are interested in, but not too many at a time, so they will still have enough time to play. Only parents from East Asia are extremely ambitious about their children. I remember when my daughter was in nursery school, there was a boy whose mother was Japanese and whose father was Chinese. At the tender age of four, that poor little guy had to attend Japanese AND Chinese classes AND piano lessons, AND at home they spoke English. Later he was a classmate of my daughter, excelled at school and was honored for having the best possible "Abitur" of 1.0.
Sie brauchen also kein Shampoo, Rasierklingen, Deo, Zahncreme oder Putz- und Waschmittel? Kein Klopapier? Keine Pflaster?
